Re: Suggestions for Gibby and a baby PLEASE

Oh gosh... I guess I am coming off sounding unappreciative or I don't like anyones suggestions. I'm sorry because I do appreciate everyone taking the time to help. I am not "shooting down" suggestions...in fact, I intend to keep a leash on him at all times....and of course I intend for my DH to be at the other end of that leash as I am preparing food ( in spite of my joking about how he is "Mr Watch TV" )....however I guess I did not say that to you guys...sorry that was

Re: Chicken soup puppy lover's soul

Linda Arndt which is known as The Great Dane Lady and is a nutritionist...had a list of foods that she suggested on her website....she used quality of food, and other things like honesty of the company that made it and such as her criteria for picking those foods. Chicken Soup was always on that list, but I haven't gone there lately to see if it still is there...there are so many more foods on the market now..and the last time I was there she was only "into" small food companies that

Re: Suggestions for Gibby and a baby PLEASE
Couldn't Gibby just jump or walk over a baby gate?
Haha...your sure got THAT right! Actually he can't step over them..but can knock it down by breathing on it..lol! We do use a baby gate to barricade him in between the bedroom and laundry room ( where his water/feeding bowls are) but that is when no one is here and he crawls on the bed to sleep. But as I said...I have a very small home...that bedroom is right off the living room and he would not take

Re: Good thoughts for Brutus * Good update pg 9!!!

Oh my gosh...I'm so sorry that I missed this. I was on vacation last week then came home and this week just started in on my own problems....very small ones. I started reading this with tears in my eyes.... read the first 2 pages in horrible suspense...and then thought "what am I doing sitting here with tears in my eyes on the edge of my chair wondering how Brutus is" then thought. WAIT.....go to the end and read. All I can say is THANK GOD! Hang in there Brutus...and hang in there

Re: Suggestions for Gibby and a baby PLEASE
An added bonus may be that if you can make Gibby a model citizen, your son's wife may be more comfortable bringing the baby around.
Please know.....she HAD a model citizen in their Great Dane...... she hated him. No reason to think she will like mine. He has been kenneled a few times for surgery and comprehensive exams at the vet, and he did okay...but no doubt they were stressful. I work at a vet, there are a lot of dogs that don't do well in kennels

Re: Suggestions for Gibby and a baby PLEASE

Thanks for some suggestions tiffy and Willow. I think both things will be a little hard for the same reasons. You know we are here by ourselves... Gibby is pretty spoiled because he doesn't get left alone much since DH doesn't work anymore... We go out a lot but usually not for too long. He has never been a dog that was tied up to anything,,except once in a while I would put him on one of those things that screw into the dirt outside while working on flowers and all...but he would lay and

Re: Suggestions for Gibby and a baby PLEASE
is there not a crate he can stay in? A yard he can stay in...while you are visiting?
I live in a very small and open cluster home which also means that I have no real yard...and we are not allowed to tie up dogs outside. He has never been a crate dog...I tried to keep him one for the first 7 weeks of his life...he was so upset and cried and slobbered the whole night that I finally gave up on that....there is many many posts about that when I got him. He

Re: Maggie was attacked!
I dont know what to do today. On one hand it was one incident with this dog in the whole time we have walked our dogs. On the other hand I would never forgive myself if it happened again but this time injured one of my dogs.
I understand what you are saying exactly! I guess for me...having a very very big dog......and a dog that a lot of people ( if not most ) would be afraid of......and a dog that can outrun me if they get out of the door...... its a tough

Re: Maggie was attacked!
I'm not afraid of big dogs but seeing one grab your small dog while she yells helpless is something I never want to relive again
I hear ya..... years ago when my boys were young a very large Alaskan Malamute got out of a neighbors front door and attacked my 35 lb. pitbul mix Sammy....picked her up by the neck and shook her all over the place.... his owner was right behind trying to get him off...punched him so hard that his wrist watch flew off. I got

Re: Help! Dogs are running away and not coming to me when I try to get them...

Anne...that link did not work. I was going to look into it after Gibby slipped his collar today ( go figure...its a prong collar yet ) and took off across the street. He knows COME....and he knows SIT....I tried both...but he knew he was loose and was all excited because a dog across the street that we were talking to almost attacked him and got him all worked up. He then started jumping on me ( which he does when he gets excited ) and somehow slipped out of the collar....he so excited he didnt hear
