Acana Grasslands - others feeding it?? Finally

found it at a pet store I used to go to quite often but hadn't been out there in quite a while. Bought the small bag and am anxious to start it....hope for the best. Anyone else feed this to a sensitive tummy dog? Rivers has been doing great on Cal Natural lamb/rice puppy, but it is so hard to find consistently; he can't have any grains other then rice, no brewers yeast, chicken appears to be an offender as well. I tried Orijen 6, too rich for him; so I thought the Grasslands would be better

Re: Curious..how tall is your dog versus his/her weight??

Sera J - no need to explain Logan's body type, I personally believe Rivers to be on the super thin side for his height, although his hip bones are now covered ever so slightly; but he seriously takes on the linky appearance of a coyote. If you didn't know any better when he's in the back yard, day or night and you catch a climpse of him running or standing in a particular way, he makes you take a double take. He's really thin boned with legs like toothpicks. His hair takes on a redder

Re: Curious..how tall is your dog versus his/her weight??

We're not 100% on Rivers breed; per the records we found on him, he's part golden, part toller. However, he exceeds the height for both breeds; and his personality is more of a guardian type dog, not of a golden at all. But he is a very sweet dog, just likes to act very protective as well, and is a fanatic about water. I'm not 100% believing though, that the golden part is in fact golden, Rivers has some type of collie in him, you can see it in the way he's built...my Dad believes

Curious..how tall is your dog versus his/her weight??

Rivers, a NSDuck Toller is 2yrs old at 26" tall and weighs 53# Kuaui, a chihuahua/dachsun mix is roughly 8-10" tall and weighs 6# Dakota, a pom, is about the same height as Kuaui but shorter in length and weighs around 5.8#

Re: What can I do to make my dog a healthy weight without feeding her crap!?

Erica1989 - my sister feeds BB the lamb/rice puppy version to her dog; the ingredients are pretty bland with lamb/rice/barley (IIRC) that's pretty much it. The wilderness is a different animal, I wasn't referring to that one. My point is, for the OP to switch (if she wants to) to a slightly richer/better quality food for a while, but have it be a bland version, i.e. one meat/one grain source, then go from there. Pancreatitis can and does happen VERY commonly in dogs that have also been malnourished

Re: Feeding intact males question

Thought to also mention too; the adult version may contain less calcium but with having to feed more of it, may actually end up being more calcium intake then a food with higher kcals and only very slightly more calcium percent. I.e. the puppy version has 2.2%, adult has 2.14% calcium (lamb based formulas); if one is feeding the puppy version at 535kcal per cup the total intake of calcium would be less with the lessor food content taken in by the dog; versus the lower kcal per cup with higher intake

Re: Feeding intact males question

The cal natural adult lamb/rice has 2.14% calcium; the puppy version is 2.2% not too much different honestly. For what it's worth though, I didn't start Rivers on the puppy version until just barely over a month ago, he was already 2 when I started it. I didn't really have any options, the adult version didn't supply him with enough energy, everything else gave him the pooies. He was raised however, on Orijen large breed puppy food and Innova large breed puppy food; both having around

Re: What can I do to make my dog a healthy weight without feeding her crap!?

Important thing too, is you don't want to put on too much weight too soon, this could also lead to other issues. Have it be a gradual thing over several weeks. Eukanuba foods were the fairly decent ones several years past; but other companies have far surpassed them now with much better quality diets. Make sure you do not automatically switch to a rich diet though, this is VERY important as it can lead to pancreatitis if too much of a good thing is given as the initial diet. I would switch to

Re: Feeding intact males question

Rivers is the same way; but he was neutered at 4mnths old. He requires a lot of calories moreso then my 75# malamute did at 2yrs old. And Rivers is only 53#....energy level of the two were about the same at this age....so I think it's his breed type. The puppy version of Cal natural does have more calories, but it also has a lot less carb's then the adult version; thus I feed the puppy lamb version at nearly 4 cups a day depending on his activity level for that day. Liesje....if you switched

Re: Rivers & back to square 1....need ideas....

Rivers's ear cleared up with a bit of a saline solution rinse; think he just had debris in the one ear. Diarrhea cleared up too. We're beginning to believe that it's the sediment left in the water tank of the 5th wheel when we take trips that's causing the loose stool; at least on the last 2 trips. Keeping him on the Cal natural for now, as his ear seemed to be related to the trip, thus far.
