A number of years ago I had the opportunity to watch a group of dogs at an AKC herding competition (it was a national specialty). Prior to that time I had only seen border collies herd, and a couple of clips of aussies and ACDs. The event was the Tervuren National. The herding bug bit hard that weekend and since that time I have been a cheerful (and sometimes discouraged) hobby herding addict.
I am reminded many times when dogs and sheep and friends are involved, what a gift this is. I have found wonderful people, intriguing dogs, and beautiful scenery on a regular basis. The clinics and trials offer a mini vacation and memories that provide joy repeatedly.
This past weekend was just such an event. I was able to get my money in on time for a three day Bob Vest Clinic (that is an accomplishment, in and of itself). Bob is an amazing man. His insights and explanations offer so much beyond just dog training. He is a philosopher as well as a trainer. It is so amazing to see him work with two high drive (protection oriented breeds Bouv and Malinois) along with the more traditional aussies and border collies, lets not forget the cardis and pems. Every single dog made tremendous improvement from the aussie who was making 150yd outruns and 75 yard drives to the bouv who was walking the prerimeter of the small pen quietly with manners. To respond to each one of those dogs and change what he was saying to fit the moment was the mark of a master trainer.
So, I am giving praise to the Creator for such gifts as people, dogs and sheep, as well as the opportunity to be a hobby herder.
