Blogs

Wohoo! A dog blog. Is there anything better?

Well, yes..probably, but what the heck. Let's begin with the Excellent Adventures of Dakota and Neiko! I know that you're all on the edge of your seats to hear about their exciting day. I won't make you wait any longer!

After a long day of sleeping while I was at work, I drove the dogs over to the brand new dog park. The park isn't officially open to the public yet - only dog park members. So far, it's been a great experience - if not a little dirty. The park is 17 acres, with woods, a walking path and a lake. The dogs just LOVE it. It's great to have a fenced in place that I can let Dakota off leash. If you are familiar with huskies you know that you can't let them off leash, ever. So, the introduction of this dog park has been a huge bonus to Dakota's life.  It's great for Neiko too. What Aussie doesn't need to run non stop for a couple of hours a day? There's always a willing dog to engage in a great game of chase, or keep away.

Every owner has been really good about keeping their dogs under control. If there's a fight that breaks out, the dogs get a time out or the dog and owner move on. I hope that it stays this way when the park is open to the public. I can't even describe how nice it has been.

Anyway, after running and swimming non stop for an hour and a half, both dogs are sound asleep at my feet. Ahhhh!

Here's some pics (hopefully the pic thing works)

 Getting wet and dirty!

Must sniff every leaf.

Yeah, it's great! Everyone that goes there is just thrilled with how it turned out. Many dog parks are just flat fenced in areas with dirt. This one is all through the woods with a trail going around the entire pond/lake and 2 open spaces on either end for a good games of frisbee, chase, etc. It even has a small dog fenced in area, but that doesn't seem to get used much. Most small dogs hold their own with the big dogs it seems.

I can't even tell you how happy I've been since the park opened. I usually hike with the dogs anyway, but that doesn't really compare to letting them run free off leash.

Wow!  I have  never even considered moving to Michigan, but Kiera and I are ready to pack our bags and set out immediately!  I have never even heard of such a fabulous dog park that is open to the public!  We are trying to get a dog park here in Cupertino, we will settle for just the usual little patch of fenced grass, our expectations are very low because that seems to be all that they are willing to offer around here ;-(

Please visit our website and tell all your friends too (local and on-line)

Of course we are hoping for a strong local response, but we welcome support from all over.

Fortunately for me, Kiera is amazingly consistent about coming when I call her.  I would like to claim that it is my fabulous training methods but the truth is most likely that it's her inbred Border Collie instincts.  This does enable me to let her off leash a lot of places it's really not allowed, just knowing that I can get her back in an instant (yes she is that fast!)

I am thrilled for you and all the dogs in your community that you have such a wonderful place to go to.  And thanks for letting us know that such a thing is possible!
