  • I just took off some years off my back

Well Jack Frost has shown himself no doubt and the snow is going to be hitting hard quickly so I thought today was a good day since the sun was still out to stowaway the agility equipment. And that was a big task in itself because being that we rent and this house is old - talking 30s - the garage is a good distance away - I'd say the distance was like something in order of 2 houses. Mind you, our backyard has a slight elevation which is a chore to cut the grass and as you venture towards the side yard, it begins to slope down as you near the street. So that means, I have to carry this thing down wet grass and mud hill (picture this, possibly falling on my a$$ with the A-Frame laying on top me) and then sloping again as I near the street.

This shot should give you an idea, of course, I didn't cut through the yard.

    from here

And at a tender age of 38 Wink, I was hoping that the A-Frame wouldn't take too many years off my back which it has on several occasions from moving it in the yard. Sure, I could've bought a dolly or a dolly specialized one for that purpose but I didn't feel like driving somewhere, spending money - thats a first! - and waiting for it. Being short, 5' 7", there is a possibility of hitting the ground which it did on the soft earth and the tarmac. Oh the sound of it as it hit the street and now I know there has to be painting to be done in the Spring. Oh joy! [:'(] Scrape! Ugh.

About 200' later, my arms and upper back were killing me after I managed to get it in the garage. You see, discipline me and stupid me, worked out prior to doing this! And today was chest and back. Chloe did look puzzled when I walked past her window and stopped to take a breather. "Whats daddy doing?"

Here is a shot from the garage. If I used the bigger image, you could see Chloe in the first window.

    to here

It was a bit of a chore to get it in there but I did. It took too passes because I took the A-Frame apart but the walk was long. It really worked your legs and at the last 100', your arms and back were talking to you. I had to maneuver it in-between the wall and the dog walk.

The garage is full! We can't fit the Corolla in there now.

All the plastic stuff when inside the house and I just cleaned all them up. I'll leave the tippy board and a set of jumps out for our daily routine.

  • We're getting a special visitor on the 29th of December

I can't divulge much information because i don't want to jinx it but after applying, doing the interview, getting the approval, and now the visit is next. What a long process but it is highly understandable. The whole ordeal has kept me on edge and alas, the visitor is coming from Maryland which I hope all will go well.

  • Agility equipment trials and tribulations

Well the dog walk is here and I haven't assembled it because yours truly forgot the pins at class (goofball = me) and the weather for the next several days will be getting hotter and chance of rain and the white stuff until Saturday.

Getting the dog walk on the roof rack was a bit of a chore since I am short, 5' 7". Then I had to get the straps and the bungees around the three planks to get them secured. Because it royally blow if any one of them were to slide and do some damage to someone's car or property but it would royally tick me off if I scratched, broke a windows, or dented the new truck. It isn't even two months old and we finally broke 1000 miles on it. After two hours in the cold, mind you I had to walk into the building and carry each plank out. Luckily a mother and her daughter  (her other daughter was part of the class after ours) held the door me. I was so drained and you know why? Because I ran all morning and didn't eat! Can you say.. D O O F U S! Stick out tongue

So I needed some caffeine and i have been really trying to stay away from it.  But alas, "you gotta do, what you gotta do." So Mountain Dew here I come and I knew the next day am going to have a caffeine headache. During this whole process, Chloe didn't even whimper or make a noise. "Good dog!"

The drive home was a long one because I didn't venture to the highway and as soon as I left the parking lot, I started to hear some funny noises up top so I stopped. It was the towel I left up there. Anyways, back to the drive, as as soon I as went past 45mph, the wind noises prevailed and then i would hear a creak. That worried me because I wonder if one of the planks were sliding back and if they were flapping. They shouldn't be doing much moving at all actually but that wind noise was horrifying to hear. Mind you, I am on some small road and its hilly and bumpy and i was a bit tense. As I near the house, Chloe started to do her normal thing when she needed to go to the bathroom. What timing!

After parking and getting Chloe to do her thing, I rested for a bit and then ....

The bloody neighbor across the street parks really close to the truck and I can't take the planks off. I was so hot. She has always been a royal PITA (look this up at an Internet acronym dictionary website if you don't know what it means) ever since I have lived here. She is never home and now she is. The sun is coming down and its getting colder. She finally leaves 30 minutes and later and its dark. I decided that I wasn't going to leave the dog walk at the house but leave it i the garage - doofus strikes again! So I had to walk to the garage which was a good 200' away. Ahh, did you think I should drive to the garage? Haha. Not on this day! I already too all the straps off. Oh that part of Monday really blow chunks.

Last week, I had to do some touch up painting on the teeter plank. And I am debating whether or not to lowering and mostly i will be but Chloe is doing her 2o2os fine. Three weeks ago, I lower the A-Frame back to 3' to work on 2o2o.

Today, I hosed down and clean the jumps. And the more I think about it, I need 3 more jumps. I'll get them through Denise this time around. I haven't decide if I need a triple, double, panel, or broad jump but for sure I want a tire jump since the chute seems to go hand-in-hand with it. Just one of those things I have noticed.

When its cold and wet outside, I usually take one of the jumps inside and luckily, I can break down the jump width even further to work on some flatwork. Getting a rear cross tight takes some work but boy is it awkward.

Today is suppose to be near 60 degrees. I wonder what I will to do with Chloe? Wink

  • Finding Chloe's stress triggers

OK, I know she just started taking agility classes but I do her to perform at her best. I have been observing her in what causes her to slow down or stress out. For thing, I really think it is the mat and the only time she has run either at max speed or near it was when she was doing her Zoomies.

For the past two classes, I have been arriving early  - a good 30 to 45 minutes - to ease off the sensory overload. Today was better which maybe be attributed that the classes are back to back instead of a two week break. Nevertheless, prior to class I did our ritual because she needed to let loose from being couped up indoors and then gave her a bath to rinse off the mud and dirt and headed off for class.

Once we arrived, I went straight to the area to work on some flatwork but she was already feeling stressed so I brought the arsenal, football which is squeakerless, soft disc, and her platypus (the one where you stuff eggs in). I have noticed that she will play tug with these toys. The platypus really excites her because of its fur-like texture. I have been charging it up those with some c/t and stuffing some treats inside of it. And of course, she didn't want any part of it. So back to the flat work area and started to throw the toys, no response. So I figured to run with her back and forth. But I didn't want to interrupt the private session so I tried to stay far away from them. The more she was running the better she seemed as her tail was at its midpoint and then started to raise. The more I ran, the higher the tail. Then I start to work on some stays and breaks and slowly introduced the platypus, and bam! She was shaking the hell out of it!

I continued to run her back and forth and throughout the obstacles. Denise was telling me that i might tire her out before class. Surprise  But this a Jack, they don't tire easy! Over the summer our sessions go past 2 hours at full speed.

Class starts and the first half of it she was less stressed until, Molly the Corgi started to act up. We did the tunnel she was fine. Now from some rear cross work and critiquing - we need to get it tighter. Then it was back to the tunnel but with a sequence. Chloe froze up and was stressed out. And the cause...

The sheltie was barking right beside her. Now when it was the Sheltie's turn, Chloe's prey drive reacted and wanted to chase her. This was the same behavior she did when Denise had her dogs, Zippity and Zachery, out. If anything runs, Choe wants to get it.

So from what I can tell right now, I think they are:

    1. Mat
    2. out of control dog - Molly
    3. Barking dog.

  • Zippity doing what she does best!

This is one of my instructor's dogs, Zippity. This was at the Cynosports World Games '07.

    Check out the footage.

  • Hooray! Added my first video

We took this today using our old and trusty digital camera. So the resolution will be small.

I still have to strip some footage from the Cynosports World Games for Denise.

    Fast doogie!!

I'll post some links when I get done.

  • This week was slow or was it?

I haven't been doing my blog as much since I have been sort of busy with other stuff in my life and after the "Max" episode - check the forum - I started looking for another dog to be a part of the family. The main focus was something manageable like another JRT Geeked or something small but definitely from a rescue or shelter. Just thinking about some of the stories of the dogs at the JRT rescue makes you think how bad people really are! Like to take a puppy and use wire to tie its hind legs and then to have the puppy chew off its own leg. Its on pain meds for the rest of its life and the leg was amputated! Or how about some moron pouring acid on puppies? Thats what you call someone being stupid for not fixing their dog or their greatest idea fall back on them. I love the type of people that love to play God and create living things because it is a cute a idea or to make money when they have no freaking clue whatsoever!

Yesterday in Pittsburgh, someone lady didn't have a license to have a kennel. The human society counted 26 dogs dead and many more in crates. I am pretty sure most of them either going to the pound or to another kennel. I bet you the person(s) that the the idea of a kennel was novel and a good cause but I seriously think they got tired of it. If thats the case, move the dogs off!

I have tried several times to submit the application via web on the rescue and to no avail I get an error. So now I have to snail mail it. Angry

    Oops! Sorry for the rant.

Wet and white stuff came down most of the week so we were stuck indoors. The white stuff didn't stick around but it is certainly trying to! It was suppose to be sunny this weekend but heavens said otherwise. We did manage several session outside, they went OK as I am starting to get our 2o2o on the A-frame. At times, Chloe gets brain fade and just follows me off or stops way too early. I think I am the cause of that behavior because I use to hold on her on a stay about 30 or so feet and when I recall her, at times I called for wait for her to pause. So now what happens, when I call for feet she'll stop right where I said it. This is going to take some time for me to change. She is doing them well on the 2o2o not at 100% but the success rate is higher than 85%.

I did time her yesterday on the weave poles though. I was impressed with the results so far so better things to come as we have been only doing weave training since August. She isn't at Zippity's (Denise's dog) speed or level who is faster than most BCs out there but I am not comparing a JRT to her since he is a bigger dog. Zip's time for 12 poles is 2s and Chloe's time is slightly slower than that.

Now to compare dog's in the same size class there's a Papillion that held the 60 pole record for a small dog 8-14" class and I calculated her theoretical 12 pole time to be 2.57s. I also timed some small dogs on the "Dog Competition" show on ESPN2 and Edge, a JRT, was quick at 2.67. Now before you go ripping me on me, I know timing off the TV can't be accurate but it gives me an idea thats all I care about at this point in time. Its the engineer in me that wants to deal with numbers. Once the body breaks the plane, the clock starts and the stops once the plane of the last pole is reached. And the camera angles can't you give you an accurate view on the entry. Geeked

Anyhow, Chloe's times aren't that far off from those listed. Mind you, we have been only been doing this since this past August. We played fetch and trained on different obstacles before doing this. She did have her backpack on first which has some weight on it. I timed her with the poles where I currently set them at for the past several week which was 2" apart and then I closed them.

    2" gap

    With backpack:   2.9-3.11

    Without backpack: 2.38-2.67

    0" gap

    Without backpack: 2.79-3.11s

We have some ways to go and my goal is going to be slightly faster than what it is now. But I am not disappointed at all for a beginner dog and handler. I think we are doing well. Maybe a bit over achieving but the enthusiasm is certainly there.

I also dabbled back into the Clean Run issue on handling as I still haven't finished it. Now that I think about it, I still haven't finished the "Controlled Unleashed" book either.

Well, I am off to the trials to watch the small dog handlers and hopefully Denise will have her laptop so I can get the Cynosport Games footage on DVD.

So much for washing and waxing the truck today!

  • Yard work & training yesterday

November already? That was fast! Besides being Fall with an abundance of colorful leaves making their way onto the yard, time was nearing as the grass cutting season was almost over - well thats the theory anyhow. Oh yes, there have been several hints of frost in the morning but the stubborn green stuff at one side of the house refuses to obey thus continues to stretch to the sun lit heavens.

I hope this will be the last time I would bring out Mr. El Toro but I am not holding my breath that's for sure. The Wx man says next week that Jack Frost might hint a sprinkle so that green stuff better heed the warning!

But whats so grand is having a yard free of leaves, that gorgeous tidy it possesses after it has been groomed. The chore itself usually takes me an hour and quarter and yesterday wasn't any different. Its just there are more things to shuffle around in the yard if you get my meaning. Wink

Chloe sat idly by atop her couch at the window and gazed as I appeared in and out of her view. The times I stepped into the house to get a drink she would bring her football and drop it at my feet then to gaze into my eyes to tell me she wanted to play some fetch. Her facial expression changed when she noticed that I did not pick it up, she was disappointed but I told afterwards.

Once I finished doing yard work and cleaning the mower, it was time to a break and then give Chloe some attention which basically involved getting something to drink and work on some 2o2o and some attempts at tugging. Once my legs recouped, it was time to take the speed demon outside. First things first, I need to put on her back pack - now it has 1lb in it from a ½ lb, 30' lead, football, and her treat bag.

My rule is before we go out she has to be calm before we go out that door and before she leaves the porch, I want eye contact. Then she gets rewarded with a treat. I keep her next to me now because of her prey drive so I want her focused on me. Her adrenaline is amped up she's beginning to shake and bark telling she wants me to throw the ball now. So I throw the football, recall her and repeat. After about 15-20 minutes of this workout play, I then removed the 30' lead. Now you can tell she is hampered by that lead because now shes showing more agility and snap in her movements. With her back pack still on, I started to slowly work on the table-down, break (like a heel), tunnel, 2o2o on the teeter, and the introduction of the chute barrel. Every third attempt or so, I'd throw the ball to keep her awareness and focus tuned on me. About 10 or so minutes, it removed her backpack.

Once I take that off, she is bouncing and springy, meaning she is very, very light on her feet. So now it is time for some running. So I have her run on my left and right for a bit or as long as I can take it - I really hate that I put all this weight on myself after I quit smoking.  Now I start trying to use some speed by putting her in stays and and making run the a sequence obstacles at full speed. Nothing special here just straight line stuff at first and then starting to add some 180 turns. Our sequence goes like this, I put in her a down stay and lead out somewhere in the middle of the yard, break, then command a table down, pause and then lead out about 20' or so. Then I call for a break in where she has to jump then walk-it (A-Frame) and the chute. From there, I need to go to the tunnel which is going to be a 180 turn from there and I need to perform a front cross so I can set her up for the next obstacle which are 12 poles. After the poles, I can send her over to jumps that are situated side-by-side and I have a decision, I can run back through the poles or the teeter to finish.

We had some stumbles either caused by me as I moved too early and she skipped the obstacle entirely but for a first day with 3 new obstacles, it was a good positive day so far. She was smiling that was for sure. I figured she wanted more so i figured to give her a break to get a drink and for me to step in to get the rest of the chute.

My goal was to familiarize her and see what she do. I started by rolling the fabric up and leaving about a quarter exposed and call her through the chute on my left and right side several times, my secret weapon first was the football. I used the football or the soft disc when I was training her on the obstacles, if that failed, which is rarely did, there was the treats. She would only go to the treats if she started to get hungry. As I called out the command, I would throw the footbal and she would to the obstacle to get the ball or come back for a treat. Anyhow from there, I'd unroll more fabric to a third and repeat. Then two-thirds and finally all of it. She did very well.

Then I wanted to just work on the tunnel and the chute so I was basically sending her in a oval. I first warmed her up by just standing several feet from the tunnel and her either on my right or left and saying the command. She would run through and then see the football crashing down on the other side before she made it out. Then I integrated myself to navigate her to the chute. Success!

Then we did an intermission for a bit and just played fetch and then proceeded to work on the teeter and 2o2o for several minutes. And then I just wanted to see something and send her to the chute, nope! Oh well, I have to roll up a bit and then she remembered what it was.

I decided to finish off the day with some fetch and then she had the zoomies! I just stood there and watched how fast this dog was running. She was smiling when she was running and so I thought about something. Since she has the zoomies what if I take her through the poles. OMG! That was a good difference, I had no stopwatch but for sure it was tad faster than the fastest shes gone through them. I wish I had it on video!
