PLEASE HELP, big wound on Coke...

I was just rubbing and petting Coke, thinking about taking him outside to brush him, when I found a big oozing wound on him!  I have NO idea what this is or where this came from.  Yesterday I was at an agility trial all day with Kenya.  DH had to work a double shift, so his SIL came over around noon to take Coke out.  I got home around 6pm.  I've taken the dogs out several times since then, but I am always outside when they are playing, usually doing yard work or cleaning the porch.  They've been very playful, as they usually are when Kenya comes home after being away from Coke, but nothing out of the ordinary, no yelps from Coke to indicate she bit him.  DH came home after midnight and went to bed, then got up and went to work at 8am, so the dogs were in the bedroom with me that whole time.  After they played this morning I went to my grandpa's apartment for lunch and left the dogs free in the house.  When I leave them free, I shut them inside (no porch) and shut the door to DH's room b/c there's a lot they can get into in there.  Nothing was unusual when I got back.  I have no clue how old this wound is, if it's a bite or what.  Coke hasn't been licking or scratching the area, otherwise I probably would have noticed.  It's on his left side, past the shoulder.  It doesn't look like a puncture, I can see raw pink skin.  It's almost like his fur got stuck on something and ripped off?  It doesn't seem to be bleeding, but the fur around the area is sticky and clumpy, it looks very wet so I think it's oozing.  I didn't touch the actual wound, but Coke didn't really seem to notice when I parted the fur to get a look at the wound.  I tried to get a few pics, distracted him by hiding treats in a shoe so he was trying to dig them out while I took the pics.  He doesn't *seem* affected at all so I didn't want to make a big deal but I'm quite appalled by this.  I'm reluctant to blame Kenya since like I said, it doesn't look like a puncture and in the past if the dogs get too rough, Coke will yelp and then lie down and ignore Kenya or she will snap and walk away.  They've never been in a fight or injured each other more than pulling out a little clump of hair or one dog slipping and falling during play.

Here are my pics.  Sorry these are horrible.  I'll try to get better ones when DH gets home.  I didn't want to make a big deal out of it and I don't have any way to hold him down by myself.

See the hair falls over it, that's why I didn't see it and only noticed it as I was petting that area and felt clumps in the fur.  I thought he got into something sticky.

I'm going to go through the house and see if it looks like he got stuck on something while I was gone this morning.

Any ideas on what this is or how I can tell how old the wound is??!?!?!  Does this look like something Kenya did?

Re: PLEASE HELP, big wound on Coke...

More info....called DH and he said he didn't notice anything.  He said his SIL did come and take Coke out yesterday, didn't mention anything wrong.  I searched the house but cannot find a clump of hair.  I took Coke outside to see what he would do, and he wanted Kenya to play with him.  I took him back in b/c I don't want the wound getting dirty or her accidentally biting it.

    You cannot see it normally

Here you can see it b/c he stretched out.

Also I lied, it's pretty much right on his left shoulder, not past it.  When I pull all the hair back, the wound is about the size of a silver dollar coin, maybe a tad bigger, the cap of a milk carton.

I'm thinking this is very recent, as now the ooze seems to be drying and the hair is starting to clump a lot more.

How should I treat this?  I will obviously call my vet tomorrow, but I don't think it warrants an emergency trip do you?  Should it be washed or does that just make it worse?

do you have any Betadyne?  yes, I would clean the area as easily as possible -- and maybe put some polysporine ointment on it

No I doubt it warrants an e-vet visit -- and it could have happened in a zillion ways -- it could even be a hot spot that came up quickly.  It certainly doesn't look like a bite mark of any sort -- but anything could have pulled off some fur even outside.  Some fur that got caught in a crack or some bark and Coke pulled (or was playing  and it came off in the course of events).

Re: PLEASE HELP, big wound on Coke...

Ben did something like this once, he went into a skid fetching a ball on some wet grass and slid over a stick that was lying there, probably someone had been playing fetch with it with their dog.  He took a chunk of hair off the back of his left hind leg.  I just cleaned it with warm water when we got home, dried it REALLY well and put a dab of antiseptic cream on it.  He was fine.

You may not have heard him yelp even if you'd been watching.  Ben took a header into a barbed wire fence a few months ago and didn't make a sound about it.  Some dogs are just like that.  I didn't know he had a gash from that until after he'd chucked himself into the pond later in the walk, his hair parted because it was wet and then I could see.

Re: PLEASE HELP, big wound on Coke...

    Liesje,

To me this looks like it could be the beginning of a "hot spot". Coke's hair looks to be somewhat similar to Golden Retriever's, a breed prone to them. Flem only had a hot spot once, caused presumably by a scratch from one of Spip's teeth during play. Flem never yelped or whined and when only found it (it was on her throat right at the collar line) while petting her. Like you we noticed a clump of sticky hair and what we saw when we separated the hair there was a oozy pinkish area the size of half a credit card.

If it is a hot spot, you need to cut or shave the hair around the area (about one inch out), clean the area with something like Betadine then apply medicated Gold Bond powder to help dry it out. Others prefer to use an antibiotic topical cream (something like Neosporin) on the area. I guess you can do both. The cleaning and cream/powder need to be repeated several times a day. If the oozing area enlarges rapidly (it can grow in hours), you'll need to go to the vet for sure and Coke would then probably be prescribed antibiotics.

I hope this helps and that Coke's ouchie will be cleared out soon.

My first thought was looks like a hot spot. But you say you've never seen him licking it. Yes, needs to be cleaned immediately, probably best to shave around the parameter so you can get at it easier to clean it and keep hairs out of.

Dixie has gotten hotspots like that overnight too. Clipping the area and getting this to dry out is usually our approach. Medicated Gold Bond Powder is the Golden Retriever owner standby :0)

Last one that she had we took her to the vet for  a shot and some antibiotics. That really sped up the healing process.

Re: PLEASE HELP, big wound on Coke...

I wondered about a hot spot, but doesn't that take a while to develop?  This is a pretty big wound for a hot spot to just pop up in one day and the fur around it is totally soaked in ooze.  I brush Coke every other day, so the oldest it could be is from yesterday, but I'm thinking it's from today because it seems to just be starting to scab over and both DH and I like to pet and rub all over Coke, which I'm sure I did yesterday when I got home since I'd been gone overnight.

No, hot spots are known for the speed at which they form and develop. I am talking hours, not days.

I'll have to have a vet clean it up.  I had him muzzled and tethered and he is flipping out if I so much as try to trim the hair AROUND it.  Tried to rinse it off and goes crazy if anything touches it.  He has a VERY low tolerance for pain!

Do you have Betadine in spray form ? You could use this without needing to apply a compress and then the Gold Bond powder. If it is a hot spot, this could help prevent the spreading until the vet has a look at it.

Let's see, I have epsom salt, neosporine, hydrocortisone cream, lamasil (for DH's ringworm), and hydrogen peroxide....

ETA: in the med kit I have "BZK wipes" and "neomycin" ointments.

Re: PLEASE HELP, big wound on Coke...

With what you have, I would use the wipes to disinfect (try to rinse the area off before if he will let you). Then dab the neosporine on the area. From what I see on the pictures he should not be able to lick himself there, right ?

For hot spots, assuming this is one, another solution to dry out the area after disinfecting is to use tea bags (regular black tea; the tannins are what is effective). Put a regular tea bag in warm water (as warm as possible without risk of burning the skin) until it is moist enough that some color is seeping out. Apply the tea bag on the area and leave it there for a few minutes (put the teabag back in the water from time to time so it stays warm). You can use teabags that way a couple of times a day.

Re: PLEASE HELP, big wound on Coke...

I can't tell from the picture, but is there just a tuft of hair coming off it or is there a flap of skin with attached to the tuft of hair? If it's a flap of skin with the hair it's probably not a hotspot and could be helped with some suture. I would recommend just cleaning it with plain soap and water and covering it with neosporin. Try to keep him out of it. I don't ever recommend using hydrogen peroxide or betadine on open wounds if they aren't super dirty because it can cause further tissue damage it their full strength form, especially hydrogen peroxide. Plain soap and water works well for the average wound.

I don't know much about hot spots.....never had to deal with them....is it possible he ran into the corner of that table he is laying next to? The corners look pretty sharp to me and that is why we removed our table in the den......their favorite hang out spot......
