    Size of kibble

When I got Gibson, the breeder wanted me to keep him on Pedigreed for at least 6 months. Obviously..I didnt' do that much to her dismay. I know not to give puppy food to a Dane baby...but EP puppy was designed for them...so that is what I switched him to.

However...I noticed that when he ate the Pedigreed he chewed it...and the EP is a little smaller and he does NOT chew it.  ITs  kind of the same size around but not round...its flatter which makes it smaller.  He was having trouble with a little vomiting before...and there were several things I was thinking,  but that was one of them also.

AS many years that I have been feeding EP to Bubblegum and Ollie....I can't think if this puppy is smaller than the regular EP Adult or not.  I wondered if anyone knew.   I am thinking that I might go buy him the adult formula if it is...to try to get him to chew it again.

I know exactly what you mean.

Falon doesn't chew anything smaller than a dime kibble size.  Occasionally when she was on Pinnacle Duck (which are small kibbles) she would throw up/burp up a few pieces, so maybe your vomiting issue is a similar situation?  She's currently eating Natural Balance AMP b/c the kibbles are a flat nickel-size kibble and she actually takes the time to chew it! (I know that formula wouldn't work for your case).

I *think* that the EP holistic LBP is the same kibble size as the LB adult, but I can't remember.  I've fed both the Holistic LBP and the Regular EP LBP, and the Holistic kibbles were bigger.

Ben does the exact same thing. I don't have any input, but I will be sticking around in this thread. He's on Horizon puppy, and since he's not a large breed the kibbles in the "regular" puppy foods are so tiny. He doesn't even think about chewing. *sigh*

The store didn't have Evo Red Meat in large bites the last time I stopped in, so I had to buy a bag of the small bites for Luke.  Yeah, he pretty much inhales it, coughing and gagging the whole time.  I've found that if I mix it in water (such as with his Solid Gold Seameal) he slows down and actually chews it.

    Luke -- Lab/Shepherd (1-1-04)
Kaiser -- Alaskan Klee Kai (12-30-07)
    Sar -- Arabian gelding (4-11-80)
    Norman -- Percheron/TB gelding (6-18-00)

    Re: Size of kibble

I've never owned a dog that chewed kibble regardless of size of kibbles and suspect the larger type kibbles are much more of a choking hazard than the smaller types- get one big one stuck, bye-bye, inhale a few small ones, just cough them out. Dogs don't naturally chew- they are designed to shear dead animals into swallow-able chunks. If the dog is choking on the stuff maybe try mixing with a little canned and freeze in a kong. Or feed out of a buster cube or similar.

Gibson doesn't choke on it...just that since he chews the larger kibble...I thought it would be nice to chew the kibble he will be eating the rest of his life.

I have also added about 1/2 c water and it might have slowed him down a bit.

But thinking chewing might be better for his teeth than inhaling.
