What's in your K9 First Aid kit?

With Monroe's recent puncture injury and Morrison's hive outbreak I got to thinking that we should have a kit in each car - one car would always be home or with us.

So I'm thinking of things like Benedryl, pressure bandages, hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting etc etc.  What is in your kit?  What have you found most useful?  What would you always have and hope to never use?

Thanks for helping me create my shopping list!

MIne are rather large after 30 years of Ridgebacks ....and they stay in the house and RV

Benedryl, Imodium, Pepto liquid,  Oral syringe and NEW UNopened bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide. Gel to stop bleeding,  spray anti histamines, Baytril, Cephelexin, Rymadil, Toradol.

Ace Bandages in 4 sizes and widths, 2-3 pair of old panty hose with control tops, Gauze in 3 sizes,  Tape , normally cloth, a good basket muzzle,  a no bite collar ,  Bandage scissors,  regular sharp scissors,  tweezers,  a tick magnifier, a small bottle of liquid soap, a small bottle of distilled water,  Listerine the old yellow stuff,  flea and tick treatment,  4 paint stirrers, Pressure bandages,  and some guaze rolls.

GLOVES -- you may wind up working on a dog not yours or an animal not clean.  Cloth gloves or protective gloves.

if you go to my website critturs.com there's a "First Aid" to click on.

Re: What's in your K9 First Aid kit?

I have that AKC pet first aid kit dog.com sells, to which I have added hydrogen peroxide, styptic powder and antibacterial ointment.  I know that's not comprehensive but I keep it in the car and am confident I can handle anything that might happen until we get home or to the vet.

One slightly odd thing (I think) that I keep in there is a resealable bag of treats.  If Ben hurt himself somehow and I needed to do anything beyond a quick once-over I'd rather be able to toss him a treat or two if I'm going to have to (temporarily) make him more uncomfortable while I fix the problem.  I'd never do it if the injury was severe enough that I thought he might require anesthetic, but for pulling something out of a paw with tweezers or similar I like to have treats handy.  I *can* do it without but IMO no reason not to make him as cooperative as possible.

I bought one awhile ago at Petco or Petsmart and it has bandages, gauze, antibiotic ointment, aspirin, alcohol wipes, scissors, tweezers all that kind of stuff.  It had a lot of stuff for the money I paid for it.  I added a few things personal to Willow like Benedryl, Pepsid and Immodium too in case we are on the road.

I'm like Bonita of Bwana - I have a home made kit that stays in the SUV, plus a smaller one in the training center.  I have just about everything under the sun in the darn thing.  Hope I never need any of it!

I saw one kit from Orvis that has honey in it.  Can you think of why?

I'm not going to buy a kit but assemble one specific to my dogs because it seems the kits for sale are a little "spendy" (Minnesota word of the day).

Indermil or dermabond is great to have on hand too

it's good to have an electric shaver incase you need to shave hair around a wound too

I keep suture, a needle driver, and a few sterile instruments just incase, but it's prolly overkill

LOL The difference is that YOU know how to use them while the rest of us would probably sew ourselves to our dogs!

in addition to that hardware ( and be sure you can safely use it.)...add a small packet of antispasmotics that you can get from your vet, as well as  a few broad spectrum antibiotics that you can start before your vet visit....but ask your vet  what is the best antibiotic to keep on hand...  Might even ask about benedryl or a small dose of steroids in case of insect bite....Dvet

I have the usual benedryl, baby apsrin, peroxide, Gentocin spray,  ear cleaners & drops, tweezers, doggy thermometer, gauze & tape and an Ace,  And as with probably 90% of all golden retriever owners, Gold Bond powder...and of couse a "cone" in case it is needed.

Re: What's in your K9 First Aid kit?

I don't have a special first aid kit for the dogs our human one pretty much covers it EXCEPT for the EPI pen needed for Hailie who is highly allergic to spider bites!  So with that on hand I figure I have it covered pretty well.
