    Pilates?

I took my first Pilates and Yoga class yesterday with a friend. Yoga I did not like one bit, but I did enjoy the Pilates. My stomach hurts a bit today which was expected. I think I will continue taking a Pilates class at my gym once or twice a week, I need something different to throw into my routine to lose more weight. Does anyone else do Pilates and have you noticed any significant results from it? I heard it's a great workout for your abs.

    Re: Pilates?

I have a Pilates DVD I use (less frequently these days, unfortunately), but when I was doing it 4 times a week or so, I noticed amazing results.  My legs and arms were so much more toned than before, and the more I did the exercises, the easier it became to do them (increased flexibility).  I really enjoy it!

I tried Pilates once but I enjoy my total gym more. If I remember correctly, Pilates was started as a set of toning and strength exercises for dancers, who certainly need a strong core.

    Re: Pilates?

I never got into Pilates b/c it seemed like kind of an expensive fad (mats, clothes, videos, classes...) for all the same exercises I did in gymnastics every day.  That said, I like the concept behind both - just using your own body and weight to tone yourself, especially the core.  Core strength is huge in gymnastics, the rest is more mental and technique.  For gymnastics we rarely did any weight training because it was counter-productive, it wasted time and energy building muscles we didn't use or using muscles in ways that we never needed to use them.  So instead of bench pressing, free weights, or lateral pulls, we would do push-ups, pull-ups, walk on your hands back and forth and back and forth... If we needed more weight added we'd do torturous things like partner push-ups, lol!  So anyway, no I've never done Pilates per se, but yes I am a huge fan of conditioning exercises and know a gazillion of them for each area of the body.

    Re: Pilates?

I've had the opposite experience with Pilates, Liesje.  I'm doing Pilates about every other day and I'm amazed at the results.  It's simple, I didn't have to buy anything, I do it right on the floor with a blanket, and I have exactly one book that I use.  Of course, I'm starting at rock bottom when it comes to conditioning - I was a mess.  But I went from not even being able to sit up without pushing myself up, to being able to do abdominal curls, in just a few weeks.  It helps my breathing, my posture, and my stamina, and I'm more relaxed overall.  It's even helped my dog training because I feel more balanced all the time.

Pilates and Yoga can't tell you which I DON"T like more Smile  :Yoga is sooooooo boring and in the Pilates Class the instructor talked constantly, could not stand either one.  I like swimming laps and aqua classes that I take and just enjoy all the machines in my regular health club.  By the way I've been doing it for about 40 years now.

I'm with you, Brookcove. Love Pilates! I don't do them enough lately (trying out new types of exercise) but I really like the benefits--whole body ones, too!
