    Selling gold (mrstjohnson)

There has been some discussion lately about earning some extra money.  My dad told me about this and I thought he was off his rocker.  But, he said that a jewerly store down the street was buying used gold (since it is sooo high now).  I used to wear A LOT of gold in high school, rings, bracelets, necklaces, etc. (Italian thing).  Anyway, 99% of it was given to me by an ex-boyfriend and the rest were bracelets that were broken etc.  Anyways....I brought in about 7 rings, three thin bracelets and 1 thin necklace and they gave me $600!!!!  I am so pumped!!!!  I couldn't believe it.  I checked around first to make sure they were paying a good rate (gold closed yesterday at $930).  Here is an article that tells you how to calculate what you are selling to make sure you aren't getting ripped off.

Maybe that old high school ring you don't care about or a necklace that is broken, etc. could get you some extra bucks!  Sorry, don't mean to sound like an informercial!!!

I've thought about it and if I knew where to go, I would. I have a bunch of stuff that I'll never wear again and would love to make a few bucks off of it. Hmmm...maybe I should check around and see where I could go.

I would call a local jeweler.  A lot of the places I looked online were payday/cash advance scam places.  But a good local jeweler, which is where I went or could at least tell you where to go.  From what I understand they make a ton doing this.

Did you actually weigh your stuff first? How can you tell if it's 18 or 24 karat?

If it is real gold, it should be stamped into the metal (some of my stamps were hard to read, but they were there).  The stamp should say 10, 14, 18, 24, etc.  The higher the gold content the more they are worth.  Most of my rings were 10 kt. but I had a few 14 kt. rings and an 18 kt. bracelet.  I didn't weight my stuff, but they should weigh it right in front of you and if you bring in the calculations from the link above you should be able to tell how much of a "cut" they are taking.

Regarding the karat thing, too.  The jeweler did this check with this magnifying glass thingy too, so don't panic if you can't find the stamp.  That's how they check I guess.
