anyone got any experience with being hacked? (jm)

i think my old email might have been hacked!

i almost never check it, and i saw i got some "subscription veryfications" for some free movie site a few months back. it didnt even cross my mind...

NOW, i just got 2 warnings saying i have to pay something for some download site i have NEVER been to.

both were from some german sites, which i pretty much NEVER go to..

what to do? i already changed my password. also changed the "secret question" to something that makes no sense at all, so if it's someone i know, they still cant find this out. now what?

i'd close the account, but i do have a warning through that, so i dont wanna cut off communication through there...

man, i so wanna scream out some words i am so not allowed to post here!!! @#$%^&*(

It sounds like those German sites only have your email address - not like you have been hacked.  Be careful about clicking on any links on those German sites because that could cause you to be hacked (your computer to be broken into).

Downloads that require payment generally require a credit card before you are allowed to download.

The warnings were in emails - right?  I would email them back asking who they are and why they think you owe them money.

I agree with Janet, it sounds like a phishing attempt, not a hack.  They are banking on you thinking those are official messages and sending them the info they want.  Then the WILL hack into your accounts and your identity!

I agree -- and don't call any phone numbers associated with them either -- that's usually just more phishing.

Yes, I *have* been hacked.  My ex stalked me online before I finally got 'rid' of him.  It was years ago, but he literally had "PCANywhere" (same as Go To My PC is now) installed in my computer.  First he broke into MY house (I'd changed the locks but like a dummy I hid a key), but he got in and of course to the dogs he was "Dad" and they let him in).

It may be time to switch email addresses tho.  You can carefully give friends the new one and then disconnect in a couple of weeks.

But that's why, to this day, I don't go by my 'real' name online.  "Callie" is JUST a nickname (which is no secret) but it gives me an element of protection because that ex is still out there and he is STILL crazy as a loon.

yeah, well, that's what i thought at first as well, but there is that other one from a free german site, that said i registered there...

possibly someone just using my email...

anyhow, this is an email, i havent used in a LONG time... the only reason i even checked it today, was cause my other one had some issues, and i quickly needed to send something out....

NO do NOT reply to the emails at all. It could be they spammed a ton of people and when you reply they will know your email is "live."  Are the German sites "real" addresses or just emails from a service provider? In other words is it "customer service @ sears.com" or  "joeblow @ blahspace?"

I would be surprised if it were a legitmate website asking for payment---janet_rose is right that just about everyone requires a credit card up front.

If you want to learn a little bit more about the sites you don't need to visit them---just look them up in a domain database. You can find out where the admin for the site is located, how old it is, etc. The page for dog.com even says what the site is about: http://www.networksolutions.com/whois/results.jsp?domain=dog.com

I would ignore them for now.

Re: anyone got any experience with being hacked? (jm)

Make sure to give them no information about you.  It is crazy how authentic some sites look.  I get emails all the time from "paypal" I have a paypal account, but I know when they are fake emails because they say "dear paypal member" rather than my name.

Be very careful what information you give out both on the internet and on the phone.  I have recently been a victim of identity theft, by, stupid me, thinking people that said they were form my cellphone provider phoned and i gave them my information, and they took that and bought a 550$ phone on my account.

Like callie, i do not use my name online.  yeah, my first initial is "L" my middle name is Michelle.

Maybe try googling the email address and see what comes up?

lol... thanks. the google did it!

holy cow have they tried scamming alot of people....

you're right, i did answer the mail. but the worst they can do is keep mailing me. since it is an inactive account, i can easily delete my account, if they get on my nerves....

My BF got phished once, by 'Paypal'. He seriously EMAILED them his credit card number, expiration date and all!

And THEN he called me over to the computer and asked me if I thought it was legit. Silly boy.
