Pup abandoned in hot garage - *Update* w/picture

My SIL is a realtor and one of her clients just found a female (Shih Tzu?) puppy (about 5 mo.) deserted in the garage of a foreclosed house (a side garage door was unlocked).  The poor thing had no food or water.  She was matted, dirty (included urine and fe*ces), and covered with fleas.

The client took care of the fleas and gave the pup a bath.  My brothers and my SIL spent two hours (in tolerable stretches) cutting out most of the mats.  There are numerous small sores - either from the fleas, scratching, or the matts pulling.  Grrrrrr!

According to one of my brothers she now looks like she was "groomed by coyotes".  rolling laugh

Right now the pup is in a city far from where she was found.  She is not chipped and her original owners will never be able to trace her even if they have the nerve to try!  How could anyone move and leave a little puppy to die alone in a hot garage??  How could anyone let a dog get into that condition??  brick wall angry

At least they left the side door to the garage unlocked or the pup might have been found too late.

Tomorrow she will see a real groomer who will try to make her look decent.  She will be well fed and given lots of attention until a good, forever home is found for her with people who will love her.

oh my god! what the hell is WRONG with people?

i hope karma catches up with these people!

so sweet of you guys to take care of her! she got a name yet? Big Smile

Janet It was wonderful that your SIL picked that day to show That client That house !!  Kind of makes you think something Bigger was involed doesn't it ??

With the foreclosure rate  skyrocketing. Middle class families who used to feel reasonably safe aren't any more.  With out nuts like my Hubs and I , I dread to think where  DD, SIL and 3 kids would be and things are much cheaper here than in other areas.  I do not have a single friend off the top of my head who isn't helping out someone else.  And seriously how minimum wage earing folks get by with out living in a commune baffles me!

Before dogs were abanadoned out of ignorance or by people who should never have owned a pet to start with. Now people are practically in evacuation mode all over the country, praying and hoping that financial tornado will some how not wipe them out but when it does they are NOT thinking straight.  Between deppresion and anger , the frustration of knowing you and your kids will be lucky to find a rental you can afford let alone a place that will take a dog has to be the last straw for some.  The kids are upset they aren't going to the same school and embarassed the folks lost the house. Marriages are barely working and families are being busted up left an right.

The leaving of the dog is wrong and sad BUT it was found as I am sure they counted on and rescued.... I can only wonder if the family is okay? If they will make it too?

Having been put in a terrible position a time or two I try to no longer rush to judge what folks do out of desperation.... but for the grace of God....

The client was looking around by herself that day, but, yes, it was great she found the pup when she did.

I understand what you mean, but I find it hard to believe that people can't find the resources to take or some how to send a pup to a shelter.  Even a call to AC would probably do.

Of course, there is always the chance that the door was left open for someone who never came and that the owners thought that the pup was being taken care of.  However, that excuse would not be accepted for a child and I don't think that it should be accepted for other captive creatures either.

The pup is currently residing with a 40lb dog and a 60lb dog, so comparatively she is just a "little bit" of a dog.  big laugh

it should be posssible to track the owners down- someone must know who used to own the house- and prosecute them for animal cruelty. How hard is it to drop the dog off at a shelter if you are in a bad place in life? unspeakable act to leave a dog to die like that.

I agree with Mudpuppy. There was a case here in MI recently where there was a divorce and a foreclosure. The animals were left on the property and suffered greatly until their demise. These people are being prosecuted. I get that these are tough times, but even in tough times we have to do whats right within our means. Taking the animals to a shelter or a phone call to AC isn't asking too much.

Yeh, but effective prosecution at this point is doubtful.  Animal control would have had to have been called when the pup was first found.  Pictures would have been taken and the pup would have remained in custody.  She was hungry and thirsty, but not in bad shape yet due to that.

It would take time to find the owners (months?) and they might have even left the state.  If found, to avoid abandonment charges the owners might have done something like claim that so-and-so was supposed to pick up the pup.  They might have felt pressured to pay a fine to cover the grooming and to reclaim the dog.  No one wanted the pup to have to go through all that.

The pup is sweet and friendly, but for whatever reason the owners had allowed her to become very matted, dirty, and flea infested.  Taking care of the pup quickly and getting her in a good home (away from the people that neglected her) was considered more important than punishing those owners.

I asked myself the same question when they had a report on Stockton, CA (highest foreclosure  rate in the state) and how people not only destroyed the insides of the houses as they were leaving, they often left dogs chained up in the living rooms eating plaster off the walls.  I know these people are is desperate situations, but it's not like things are going great and all of a sudden you wake up one morning and say "Oops.  We're in foreclosure.  We have to move today." There are usually a few months of not being able to make payments, so there is time to ask around and find a home for the dog or take it to a rescue or shelter.

I also agree w/Mudpuppy. At least TRY to locate these people, I believe it is doable. Not only should they pay for what they've done (what IF she hadn't been found) but, they need to be prevented from doing it again. There are consequences..... and I too ask "WTF is wrong with people??????????" I will never understand!

Aww that's such a cute nickname for her... Smile

Leaving a dog like that to suffer is incomprehensible to me.  They're sickos to leave behind an animal.  They don't deserve her anymore, so on with her new life.  I hope you find a wonderful home for her... if you don't get too attached...Wink  Glad to know that she is now out of that situation.

Re: Pup abandoned in hot garage

That is what you might think but in reality people in Foreclosure are not  always neatly packing up and planing out their next move.... It would be too easy to think  well if they fell behind on house payments what would you expect ??? Real irresponsible totally obvious...

But the tragedy is you never know ,  When a family falls apart and everyone starts blaming everyone the family pets are simply not the higest priority.  If your kids hate you cause your moving, your spouse can barely get out of bed for depression and there is no gas in the car ...? After over 35 years with the same company  it had been bought out and My very talented hardworking husband was made to take a very early retirement .  Our financial planing needed at least 10 more years of employment.  So he took the best job he could find,  It was the first time in over 4 decades he had to do pyhsical labor. The plant was unsafe and he was badly injured ,  the nuerologist felt he was a hard bump away from being a Quadriplegic.   Our family struggled painfully for the next few years , he was disabled and they denied his workers comp, the case had to go to court and what a mockery that was !! Our credit was ruined and bankruptcy was a painful pill for a very proud man to swallow. Eventually he had a life saving operation and while he will never be the same he and I are blessed we are still in love and together. He still works and he is 67. ( looks late 50s) If he did not work we would be sitting in each others pockets 24/7 and we would never survive that !!  We fought back and managed to prevail , our savings are gone but we are making it back slowly but surely !  We have different values then many other people , instead of simply putting our own needs first we contiued to help family ,  we cut back but continued with our dogs and the kids.  But we are honest enough to know there were times when  we were close, so very close to losing everything.

Every year there is a hurricane there are abandoned pets.  Fathers, Mothers even Single follk can not always stop and say  Hey I'm taking the dog too ... If you all had seen the shelter in Gulfport Ms after Katrina you would have a tiny clue as to how devastaing life can be.  People opened the doors and left the dogs , cats etc because they can not take them.  They have to get the kids , Grandma and the important papers... As we have evacuated each time ( Except Katrina and George) we have taken every dog but there was no room in the RV for ALL the dogs and ALL the CATs and ALL the People.... We have had to make the cats as safe and comfy as we could so we could get 10 people and as many as 8 dogs out of the path. The cats go into dog crates into my bedroom closet which is the safest room in the house. Water and food is left for them and they remain in our prayers. We ALWAYS return as soon as there is an all clear. In Gulfport some owners being more concerned about their pets dropped them off at the pound , even though it was a known kill shelter. They had 20 + dogs cramed in almost every run ,more in  crates or even boxes.  The area was devastated and 2 weeks after the hurricane many of these dogs and cats that had been dropped off by crying families were being Euthanized because the families did not have homes to come back to, jobs were gone lives had been changed forever.

Was this wrong?? Absolutely, but in the center of my heart I keep seeing parents at the end of their rope, feeling beyond failures holding off on getting rid of the family pet until it is too late  because it was unbearably hard.... not correct thinking BUT  I honestly can see it.... and it is beyond a crying shame. And as some one else said maybe they had made arrangements for a friend or aquaintance to pick the dog up??  When life spirals out of control the innocent do get hurt.....

tragically it will get worse before it gets better.
