    Cassidys Mom:
Obama needs to distance himself from the assertion that he's a Muslim, McCain needs to prove that the Republican party cares about people of color.

Who ever said the Republican party doesn't care about people of color? Obama and his wife have been the ones playing the good old race card throughout his campaign...and Obama seems to forget he is half white. But he identifies himself as black - thanks to him for alienating the largest race (caucasian) in the United States...

Obama would not still be in this campaign if he weren't "black".

Sorry, but blaming those big old meanie republicans is SUCH a cop out.  The volunteers are the ones who made the mistake (come on, how could they *not* think that doing that would come back to bite them) and continued mistakes by said volunteers is only going to serve to damage Obama.  Therefore, they'd do well to get their act together.

What cop-out? I'm not BLAMING anyone but the people who did this. I'm merely stating that if Obama was photographed with Muslim women in headscarfs around him the right wing would have had a field day with it, and that is a FACT. If they haven't yet said that the terrorists want him to win the presidential race, they will, just like they did about Kerry. Based, as usual, on no evidence whatsoever, they just make it up as they go along. Obviously, these campaign workers knew that and were trying to protect him, but in the end it backfired. Really, he was screwed either way - prejudiced against Muslims if they're asked to move, "proof" that he's a terrorist sympathizer if he doesn't. How exactly could the situation have been handled to avoid either scenario?

Are you actually defending a political process based on lies rather than facts? If someone won't vote for Obama because of his stance on issues, there is nothing wrong with that. But the first clue that either side can't make a solid case for why anyone should vote for their candidate is when they have to make stuff up to smear their opponent with. What are they afraid of? If McCain is truly all that and a bag of chips, he should have no trouble winning the election on his own merits. And if Obama is truly that bad, they wouldn't need to perpetuate lies about him for him to lose.

I think that the fall out from this is worse than it would have been if they had included Muslims in the photo.  Those that believe that Obama is a secret Muslim are not going to be voting for him anyway.  However, those that may be still on the fence are likely to be very turned off by Obama's people marginalizing a group of people just to earn political brownie points.

I'm not defending anything, but I do think that it's best to operate within the confines of reality, and the reality is that Rush and others like him are part of the political scene and do have a right to their freedom of speech.  You may not like what is being said and you may not like the spin, but they have a right to say it.  Trust me, I cannot STAND Ann Coulter.  I think that she is venomous and cruel, but she does have the right to be that way.  Like it or not, what these commentators say does make an impact, and again, Obama AND McCain are going to have to figure out how they are going to deal with that impact.

Conservative talk shows have not exactly been kind to McCain either.  In some cases I've heard them be nastier about him than Obama.  In that respect, this is actually a more level playing field than you might think.

They're probably the ones swallowing all the crap dished up by idiots like Limbaugh, Hannity, Coulter and the rest of the empty babbling heads.

as I said, I do not think anyone is stupid, so I would not call these guys idiots, they are all fairly intelligent. I confess I do not understand the liberal view at all, it is foreign to me, it does not make sense to me, but I do not jump to the conclusion that because liberals see it different than me they are all stupid. It seems like most liberals feel the same way towards conservatives, they do not understand our views and cannot fathom why we believe the way we do. So if Limbaugh, Hannnity, Coulter and other conservatives are idiots then I guess that makes me an idiot also, as I agree with most of their politics, and if the fact that others disagee with my politics and views makes them idiots then I guess that would make all liberals idiots to me.  I prefer to see it as a different world view instead of placing all liberals into the idiot bucket.

    Admin Note:

I appreciate that this thread has stayed very civil, I do have one request though.  Please keep this a discussion about politics and the media - not about race.  If it starts to to stray more towards a discussion of race I will start editing.  This is the first warning - any subsequent edits will be counted as a second.

Considering the IGNORANT republican drival that is sent ot me almost daily I do not think this was out of line.  The most recent nonsense was a list of atrocities commited by Mulsims..... GIVE ME A BREAK  !!! As an award wining member of a great debate team I could soooo find eqaul numbers of acts commited by ANY race.

We will back Obama, this is a Great Country and totally needs New Thinking.    IT is no longer a White Anglo Saxon  Protestant world,  there is No Reason to have to be dragged kicking a screaming into the Real World.

As far as not being all over the news????  You posted an artical IF others iginred it or it did not check out to make it news worthy it is not the party's fault,,,,, Sigh Politics the ONE thing I refuse to discuss with my friends.

I don't know that Obama's thinking is all that new.  He and Hillary pretty much had the same platform, the only difference was that she had more experience and more baggage.  Yes, he has managed to use the word "change" enough times in one campaign that it has to be a record of some sort, but other than that--same old, same old liberalism.

"IT is no longer a White Anglo Saxon  Protestant world,  there is No Reason to have to be dragged kicking a screaming into the Real World."

Sorry, but I couldn't help but respond to this.  Obama actually is a protestant, and is technically mixed race (his mother is white, no?), and in reality the Anglo-Saxons were Germanic peoples who lived in England around the 5th century, so I'm not sure if McCain would fall into that category either (although he is white and a protestant).

But wait, I thought that the democratic party was the party of tolerance and inclusion so if the next presidential candidate for the dems was  "White Anglo Saxon  Protestant" why would it matter?  I'm so confused...... Confused

    Considering the IGNORANT republican

Well this is still one "ignorant" republican that will not stoop to calling liberals idiots, even if said liberals label me an idiot for being a republican.

I have no idea about the atrocities committed by muslims you are refering to, unless it refers to the heads chopped off, the burned bodies drug through the streets and perhaps those who dies on 9/11.  These were Muslims if I remember correctly. Now that does not mean that all Muslims commit such crimes but I don't think we can deny the fact that they were Muslims. Yes all races and religions have committed atrocities.

    Bonita of Bwana:
IT is no longer a White Anglo Saxon  Protestant world,

I don't think I ever suggested that it needs to be. But at the same time if the only reason one is voting for Obama is because he is not white, well that does not make sense to me, it should be about the issues, not about what color he is or what religion.

Bonita, are you sure you're not on my BILs e-mail list? Sad Every morning I find at least 10 e-mails from him and you can bet that at least 9 of them are going to be this anti-Muslim, "Obama is a secret terrorist" crap. I cannot believe that an otherwise reasonably intelligent person would believe any of this.  Sometimes I just delete all of them without reading them because I can tell by the titles what they're going to be.  Must ... keep ... blood ... pressure ... down.

Oh.  My. Gosh.  I think we must have the same BIL. Indifferent Wink

I do not think ALL republicans are ignorant and had I not been so irate with a very good friend I would not have used that phrase.   She sent me the same drivel email 3 times in one day.... After ignoring the first two I emailed her back that she was costing me a fortune since I donate to the Democratic party every time one of these truly ignorant but seemingly sincere pcs of nonsense comes in to my home.  My "Friends" know we will not discuss politics, it goes back to the old saying about trying to teach a pig to sing , it can not be done and it annoys the pig. Tongue Tied

Not saying who is the pig or who is the teacher in any discourse on politics. IF I came to you and asked you a question about your party that woul show I was #1 Interested, #2 wanting to find out significant information #3 feel you may have the information that I am interested in,

With the availabilty of the internet no one is stuck accepting anyone's opinion as fact. And these emails that get forwarded by the kajillions are ignorant.  Is there a grain of truth in any of them?? I am sure the grain is there.... Does that reflect the entire truth ?? NOPE.

As for the White Anglo Saxon Protestant remark, unless you live in the Bible belt with folks who are being dragged kicking and screaming into the real world it would be hard to identify with .  Stand next to this reasonably sweet looking middle class older woman and hear her make noises and remarks about your bi racial grandson  and then tell me people have grown into this century. Hmm People can build a church that will house THOUSANDS but feel the need to press what is ugly in thier hearts on others.    I would not care if he was 1/2 anything , he was raised by his grandparents and look at the hundreds of thousands of people who can relate to this!

Would I have rathered it Was Hillary ??? Good  Grief YES ...I am now praying for an Obama/Clinton ticket  .... Do I think Obama will have to hit the ground running and learn like a blank hard drive??  Absolutely but for 4 years we would not have the same good old boys running the show.

We could shake the country up enough that people will have to grow up and understand that the backdoor deals and old boy politics are killing our nation.

ANYTHING that pushes for or promotes the inability to accept , learn or at least live side by side with poeple of other cultures and races is IGNORANT.   I  may be only 51 but I do remember being tiny and watching riots , assasinations and having older siblings taught to curl up inder a desk if the Bomb sirien went off...  Crying

Would I welcome a Muslim as a Neighbor? Hey if he mows his lawn and doesn'y complain about my dogs or grandkids  That is fine by me, better than the piece of trash that owned the pit bull that came in my yard causing serious damage to my dog and sense of safety...and NO that is not about the Pit it was the owners, they could have had a dalmation and it would not have made them a decent family.   Trash is Trash this family came on our radar because of the dog fight in our fenced back yard , they then dumped a dying dog from a moving car ....Angry Would I welcome any of the pit lovers on this forum into my world, living next to me and mine?? Absolutely from your writings you care deeply about the dogs, you train not complain and you reachout to educate Yes  We could bar b que together and hang out but we will not be talking politics Zip it!
