    Boppy Moms?

I didn't have a Boppy for Kali.  Or Kale for that matter.  I just used a regular pillow for nursing, but I'm considering getting one for this baby.  Does anyone know if there is something specific about the Boppy that I couldn't duplicate if I made one?  To me it just looks like a C shaped pillow.  Am I missing something?

From what I can tell they seem a bit better made,  I love the concept from someone who had a miserable lactation experience a million years ago my hat is off to any who try !! Even simple bottle feeding is more comfy with one of these pillows ans I bought them for my daughters when they had thier kids.

I don't think so, as long as your homemade version is flexible enough to mold around your waist, and then go back to its original shape, cause they're not only great for nursing (well..I have no first hand experience there, LOL, but from what I hear, they're fabulous for nursing), but for sitting the baby 'in' on the floor, or on the bed, or on the couch... It still works fabulously for those purposes with my cousin's humongous 6 month old. Yesterday I used it to wrap around him while he was laying on the couch, so he couldn't roll off (he just shoves normal pillows right off, but since the Boppy curves around him, he can't shove it off as easily)...

The only thing that might suck about a homemade one is lumpiness. I don't know how, but Boppies IME just don't get lumpy, even if you throw them in the washer several times.

I hated my boppy.  I never used it.  I could never get comfortable with it.  Riley likes to nurse laying down (and frankly so do I - get a couple of extra winks of sleep).  It seemed so cumbersome to get this thing around you, get situated.  I would just pull up my shirt and start nursing...sorry kind of graphic I know.  Riley nursed very quickly - never for more than 15 minutes...I could see the usefulness if you had a slow eater.

Yup, my boobs aren't big enough to do the laying down thing very well.  At least thats my conclusion after Kali.  We never mastered it.  The only way I could do it was if we started sitting up and then after she was latched on properly, I kind of just laid back and to the side while still cradling her.  It was next to impossible to get comfy.

I always used a pillow or two with Kali and we sat in my rocker.  But....if you really hated it, you could send it our way!  LOL.

    Re: Boppy Moms?

Addise used the Boppy pillow all the time. She had the newborn lounger that she lpractically lived in, and she had the regular pillow that she used to sit with later. So I'm a big fan of Boppy.

Can I have my 4000-something posts back? Pretty please?

I found taht as well at first.  And then I found taht I was so tired I could sleep anyway, regardless of how uncomfortable I was....  And then after a while we got the hang of it and nursed that way more often than not, it was MORE comfortable Smile

I never had a Boppy.  I did use a regualr pillow at first to help with his position.  I imagine a Boppy would have been a terrible waste of money for us

    Re: Boppy Moms?

I used a boppy, but IMO it was only helpful if the chair I was using it in had arms.  Otherwise it was just easier for me to prop a pillow under my arm on the side where her head was.  I pretty much only nurse her in the cross-cradle position, though now that she's more mobile she nurses sitting on my lap rather than laying down.  Oh but I agree with Lisa, my all-time favorite nursing position is the side-lying one.  Definitely most comfortable and you can get a little bit of sleep too.  This didn't work well for me til Shannon had really gotten the hang of BFing though.  My boobs aren't huge, either.  I also learned how to BF side-lying without having to turn over - you just kind of roll a little more toward the baby and drop your shoulder on the more "upper" boob, and the baby will latch on.

Using the boppy was great when I NAK'd (nursed at keyboard) or when I used the rocking chair.

The boppy was really nice to put around her when she first started to sit unassisted and would still occasionally fall back without warning.  I would buy a boppy for that reason alone.

You also might check out the My Brest Friend pillows.  Those are a little stiffer and flatter.  I've never tried one but I had friends who hated the boppy but loved MBF.
