If I had a child  or loved on in harms way I have no idea How I would cope.  I add only this, I believe in my country and support the troops,  living in an amazing country such as ours, we will never please everyone and never protect every one. But darn it all as a Nation we sure do try.  Thank you for your Son's service. He is a wonderful man.   Thank you Bonita My father served and I thought I understood what it was all about, then my brother served and again I thought I knew what it was all about, and then I and my husband served and I was certain I knew what it was all about, and now my son serves and I find I knew nothing at all of what it was all about.  I am proud of him and yet I am afraid and this topic would have upset me a year ago, but it drives me crazy now. Thankfully he is not over there yet, but he has volunteered for Iraq or Afghanistan and he is serving in a combat position so the expectation is he will be there before this year is over.  I also just finished reading a wonderful book that I recommend everyone read who truly supports our troops. It says nothing at all about politics or about the rightness or wrongness of the war, it is just about the men who’s job it is to knock on the doors of the family members who die in combat, about their experience, about the families, and about some of the men who died.  If anyone is interested it is called “ Final Salute” by Jim Sheeler and if it does nothing else, it will give you a newfound respect and understanding of the true cost of freedom and of the families left behind of those who paid that price.  Anyway thank you for your post and I apologize if I come across too strong on this topic, the military has always been something I support but now it carries my heart and soul as well as my support for it shelters my first born son. Joyce That's how I read her post too, I highly doubt she was talking about our troops.   Well that is not how I read it at all.  If that is how she meant it she should clarify, otherwise I stick to my original interpretation.  It sounded to me like she was talking about everyone involved in the war (since that's pretty much what she said).  "Some men aren't looking for anything logical. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn."

Wow, sorry, I haven't been keeping up with this thread at all after the first page or so. I certainly was not saying that the troops are bad guys. What I meant by the "no good guys" comment is the people CONTROLLING the war and troops. I support the troops 100% (except the ones who, you know, throw puppies off cliffs, or torture nude arabs...). I do not support the war, or the president at all. (Go ahead, fling the unAmerican insults at me.. Blind 'patriotism' is NOT true patriotism, IMO.) snownose: Chelsea is a very young woman with not a whole lot of life experience as of yet, and apparently with no connection to the Armed Forces......I come from a military family, my father is retired Army and I have several members in the Armed Forces.......that alone gives me a little different outlook on the "No Good Guys" in this war Like I said.. "no good guys" was most certainly NOT pointed at the troops. I know several people in the military currently (though thankfully no close family), and both of my grandfathers and one of my uncles served (maternal grandfather was a Marine, and my paternal grandfather and uncle were both in the Air Force). I have a tremendous amount of respect for the troops, and planned for a long time on joining the Navy myself... I find the "life experience" dig very amusing.. I think this is the incredible thing about our country we can have discussions like these , spirited and passionate on both sides. No one will shut it down they know it is our Right.  My Grandfathers served,  my Father served, 3 of my 4 brothers served, My husband was in Viet Nam while I was still a child fighting a war we could never win.  We have dear friends who are currently in service including my pain magmnt doctor who has been deployed 3 times since the start of the war for the National Guard.  ALL of us are affected by each victory and every loss.  Thankfully the Nation has come a long way since Viet Nam and your son will not return home to be spat upon because he answered his country's call. I hear our anthem and I stop, my hand on my heart as I listen or sing along, I am lucky , blessed and Proud to be an American and I will make sure my grandchildren understand and feel the same.  You may never have the joy of marching in a small town parade with a group of boy scouts waving flags knowing two of your grandsons are in this group and your other grandbabies are waving and holding thier own flags. When My then 7 year old grandson Tristan spotted a very , very old veteran wearing his army hat He paused and saluted, the rest of the troop copied him... Today he was in a patriotic show where first they signed America the Beautiful, then sang two more songs ..... This is not a perfect country but my boys are not raised carrying guns they are raised loving our Nation. Again Thank You to every one who has served our Country ,  And to the families that backed them up! If anyone bashes the government or the war, they are attacked for not supporting the troops. It's because I support the troops that I want them to come home. Many are going nuts over there. I won't post a link because the contents are disturbing and offensive (no blood, just language and psychological cruelty to kids, non-English speaking Iraqis and an innocent shepherder), but if you care to see how some of our beloved troops are treating the innocent people of Iraq, Google YouTube American Troops Going Insane. I'm not ragging on these guys. I have a brother that "lost it" in Vietnam and he's never been the same. But the guys in Iraq and Afghanistan now are NOT healthy. They've been over there too long. No person can stand to see what they're seeing and do what they're doing without going insane. I feel sorry for anyone headed over there because they're going to be surprised at what they find. McCain voted NO on limiting our troops' deployment to 12 months. He thinks they should stay longer. He says it's not important when they return from Iraq. I disagree.
