    Attaching tags to collar...

What do you guys use to attach tags to a collar?  Here, tags are required by law.  I use different collars and harnesses depending on what training or activity we are doing.  I've used the tiny carabener tip clasps but they always break or stop "closing".  I also had a regular O-ring that has the little tooth on each side so it hooks shut, but that is unreliable as well.  I want something very small that doesn't hang way down the dog's chest and bounce around, b/c Kenya is a smaller dog with smaller collars.  So far the only reliable things are the rings that come with tags, but it's such a pain to detach them multiple times a day.  Her tags are currently in a Quiet Spot that has a ring attached, so I need something small but reliable and easily removable to attach this to her collars.

I've always used on of those things you put keys on - the bigger, stronger size.  It works fine and the only time I've ever had a problem with it was the one time I accidentally attached the leash to the key ring instead of the loop that's part of the collar.  It stretched out and I had to replace it, but they're usually only about 25 cents anyway.

That's what I have now but it's a royal pain in the butt to be taking them on/off multiple times a day, I keep splitting my fingernails.

I've got Caleb's tags on a Tag It.  I've also got them wrapped in a piece of velcro wire wrap so they don't mar his coat.   http://www.bigpawdesigns.com/tagitreidtag.html

How about one of those things that people use to attach a set of keys to a belt loop? You could just put one of those on the key ring and it would be really easy to slip off and on. Also, awhile back someone posted pics/links of something just like that but made for dog tags. I can't remember what they're called, but the person who posted it liked to change collars frequently and this took all the hassle out of it.

How big is the Tag-it?  Most of Kenya's collars are 1/8"-1/2"

I never switch the tags. We have an every day collar where the tags stay permanently. When we get to training class we switch to which ever collar is appropriate. I've never felt that my dogs need to have their tags on when training, and I don't think anybody else worries about it either. In fact, when you show in AKC the dogs are not allowed to have any tags on while in the ring.

I train on public sidewalks, in stores, and in public parks and the dogs are required to be tagged and licensed with the county or you get steep fines b/c those are public locations.  Also at both training clubs I belong to, we train outdoors in rural areas and it wouldn't be the first time a dog spooked for whatever reason and got away.  It has never happened (or come close to happening), but never say never Stick out tongue  Different test also require different colors (no tags, but it still means possibly taking tags off the collar).  For example for TDI I had to have a flat buckle, for TT we have to have a choke, etc.

Any reason you can't leave the plain collar with tags on the dog, and then add the training collar? The collar with tags usually rides lower on the neck and should not interfer with the training collars. I've done this plenty of times.

I have the tag it, too.  I think it would fit up to the 1/2 inch but not much bigger than that.

Thanks, come to think of it I think my friend has one so I can look at hers.  It would be perfect as long as it's not so heavy that it drags the collar down or hangs loose.

I just add a collar.  Their regular collar stays on ... and I just add the training collar.  Taking on and off something's gonna come up missing at some point.

I don't have a dog yet, so I can't say for sure, but I think this would work well. http://collarmania.com/inc/sdetail/3098

I change collars and harnesses all the time.  I don't like collars on her at home b/c twice now she's gotten caught going in/out of her crate.  Coke's collar "gets lost" in his fur, but since Kenya's fur is flat hers gets caught on stuff.  Also collars mess up her coat b/c GSDs have a lot of undercoat and a medium length coat.  Any collar wider than her 1/8" show collar (slip collar, like a shoe lace) pushes her fur straight up and she's constantly scratching at it.  She really needs a fursaver for a permanent collar but I don't have one.

I did find a better solution than what I had - one of those silver clips you'd buy at a craft store to make a necklace with.  It's very small, strong, and can't break like the carabener style ones do b/c it's a single part (this is the only pic I can find where one is used - http://www.theprayerbox.com/lanyard-christian-jewelry-wholesale.jpg ).
