    good books?

Does anyone have any good book suggestions? Since classes are over until august i can finally do some pleasure reading.

My favorite books: Run and Bel Canto by Ann Patchett, The Memory Keeper's daughter by Kim Edwards, Stephen King's The Green Mile, David Sedaris books and i'm currently reading Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin. So, something along those lines. I don't like fantasy type books.

    Thanks!!

Look up Anne Bishop's Tir Aliann series, The Pillars of the World, Shadows and light and The house of Gaian. Fantasy, mystery, magic and hope in 3 books.

    Re: good books?

I recently read Anne Patchett's reflection/memoir about a deep friendship, Truth and Beauty, and found it very touching.  And I read The Gun Seller by Hugh Laurie (yes, the actor from House) and it was pretty funny - a satiric novel mocking espionage type thrillers.  Perhaps not as side splittingly funny as David Sedaris (who slays me), but funny.

    Have you read The Namesake?

    Re: good books?

I was going to suggest The Gun Seller before I even read Lisa Marie's post!!  I can't believe someone else has read it!  It was on my list for ages, but it was out of print for a while.  I finally found a copy at my favorite used bookstore, and I finished reading it last week.  Loved it.  Love Hugh Laurie and his dry, English wit.  I think it would make a good movie.

Anyway, if you like David Sedaris, then you might enjoy books by Paul Feig and Dan Zevin.  Both have great senses of humor, although not as twisted as David Sedaris.  Paul Feig was the lead writer for the Judd Apatow TV series, "Freaks and Geeks."  His two memoirs of his teenage and college years are very funny:  Kick Me and Superstud.  Dan Zevin's book The Day I Turned Uncool is also funny - it's from the perspective of someone who's finding himself more settled-down compared to his "wilder" days.  His other books deal with the life of a new college grad and newlyweds, but I haven't read them yet.

I saw David Sedaris at a lecture last year, and he was hysterical.  He read a few new stories that will be in a future book.  I'm hoping it comes out soon!  I think his sister, Amy Sedaris, has a book that's supposed to be funny, but I've not read it.

I also love British mysteries (Dorothy Sayers, PD James, etc.), but my favorites are by Martha Grimes (an American).  Most are set in England, but a few aren't.  The main character/detective is Richard Jury.  Quirky characters, great prose.

Those are the few I can think of off the top of my head.  I'll have to look through my bookshelves for ideas!

OOH I know of a few.

Lions Blood is a book about an alternative America where Irish/Celtic people are the slaves instead of Africans. Its a pretty good story with good morals and a deep meaning.

Blade Runner C'mon its Blade Runner lol. A Sci Fi Fantasy, kinda depressing.

Planet of the Apes Okay I know its sounds corney but its actually a pretty good book. Not much like either of the movies made based on it.

When Elephants Weep: The Emotional Lives of Animals by Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson

Great read, I think it's a must in any animal lover's library.  Mostly it's anecdotal evidence of animals showing behaviors that reflect emotion.

Tracy - that is so funny about The Gun Seller!  I think we may well have been reading it at the same time.  I thought it was quite funny - it might have been even more so if I really ever read the type of book it was spoofing!  It was kind of "satire noir"!  They mentioned the novel on Hugh Laurie's apperance on Inside The Actors Studio.  I'm guessin that is how it ended up in print again because I got it new at B&N!

Stephen King's The Green Mile, David Sedaris books

Well... there go my suggestions. I know Sedaris has a new book coming out... June 3rd, the title is "When You Are Englufed In Flames".  I'd recommend "Walking in Circles Before Lying Down" by Merrill Markoe. Also "Running with Scissors" by Augusten Burroughs. (Augusten Burroughs and David Sedaris are generally liked by the same sorts of people.)

Augusten Burroughs---Running with Scissors; Dry (I preferred Dry)

I just bought Magical Thinking (by Burroughs); I haven't started it yet, though.

Can I have my 4000-something posts back? Pretty please?

I listened to the audiobook of Running with Scissors, and I hated it. I had just listened to Look Me in the Eye, by his brother, John Elder Robison. I get audiobooks when I am going to be driving for a long time. Anyway, John Elder Robison did the audiobook reading for his own book, and he is really an excellent reader. I want to say Burroughs was the reader on his book, but I really don't remember. Nonetheless, I just didn't like it nearly as much, and I think I would feel the same way about it had I read the print versions.

    Re: good books?

It's been on every bestseller list since the day it came out and I can now see why - The Kite Runner.  I kept putting it off, thinking it wasn't really my type of book but I LOVED it.  Water for Elephants is an interesting one too, it's about a guy who leaves vet school right before graduating and joins the circus.

Beyond these, I don't have any current suggestions.  Been reading lots of memoirs.

LOL I've just been reading trashy stuff lately...quick reads I can get done in a day. Historical bodice rippers mostly...love em. I caught up with my Sword of Truth series tho...and read the new LK Hamilton book. Started Duma Key by SK and liked it...but it was creeping me out so I put it down for a while LOL.

    Re: good books?

I love to read but I hate putting a book down so I don't read nearly as much as I would like. No time.

I did just start a book called "Tell Me Where It Hurts" it is by a vet (sorry don't remember the name) I just started it but I really like it. He works in a  large veterinary hospital in Massachusetts, and it is about his patients, owners collegues. Pretty entertaining so far.
