Help, what to do about car sick Pup?

We have to take a road trip tomorrow and I need suggestions!  Grizzlie gets car sick....Just from here to the vet he will yak twice, once onthe way there and once on the way back! This is how much I would love to take our dogs when we travel......I went and bought a full size Chevy Express so they could ride in comfortEmbarrassed Costs me a hundred dollars to fill up but hey, I don't have to leave home with out my pack!!!Cool We also have four children so we all ride a little better now.  Nothing like riding down the highway with a 150 mastiff pup sitting in your lap!!! lol Anyway, back to the problem at hand, Grizz gets sick.  I thought it was just nerves, so I tried all the tricks.  We have taken short rides to the park and played and then the short ride back.  Short ride to his Nannies (My Moms) to visit and then back home for praise and treats.  He still gets sick if he's riding longer than ten-fifteen minutes.  I've heard of seditives and such that you  can give them but to be totally honest, I'm afraid to give him something like that, besides the health frights what if we have to carry his giant butt?  So.....help, I need suggestions? We are going to a cabin on a lake and I know he will LOVE the vacation once we get them there so I don't want to have to leave him behind....I refuse! Crying His mate Honey is great, she doesn't get sick.   I would greatly appreciate any help!!!Big Smile

Dramamine/Bonine for humans...can be used on dogs. Peppermint candies can help...as can candied Ginger or Ginger in some form. Rescue Remedy might take the edge off but maybe not. Keeping a window open. Many dogs have less anxiety and feel better in an enclosed crate.

I am sure others can help more.

Has he always gotten car sick?
How old is he and how long have you had him?

Eight hours before the ride, give him just a little to eat. Maybe 1/8 to 1/4 of what he would normally eat and then nothing more.

I would try an herbal calming product.

    Ginger
    Honey
    Peppermint
    Rescue Remedy

Grizz is 10 months old, we have had him since he was eight weeks.  Have you tried any of the calming remedies they offer at pet stores? I just would like to know if they are safe.  He's a big boy so I can't carry him if it really knocks him out. lol

I've used Rescue Remedy. It's safe..but it's effectiveness varys dog to dog. Dramamine is what we used back when we had an 80+lbs Akita that was carsick...he slept...but was rousable and could walk etc. This was for 3 hour car trips. Later we found that a cracked window helped him and we stopped the Dramamine.

Thank you so much for the link. I forgot to say, yes he has always gotten sick.  We thought it was nerviousness so we tried the short trip and great reward tricks several times but he still gets sick if he rides longer than 10 minutes. I'll go to the pet store and see what they have but would really like to know if anyone has tried any of those products so i know first hand it won't hurt him.

I've used dramamine on car sick fosters without any bad side effects. I used rescue remedy during a particularly bad thunderstorm on my own girl without any problems.

    Good luck!

Hylands Calms Forte -- 2 tablets work on a 400 pound human or a 5 pound dog.  It's a homeopathic so it's not going to make him groggy at all.  It will 'urge' him to sleep but he'll wake up when you need him to. (health store item)

Ok -- as a HUMAN I get car sick.  The **Worst** thing I can do is look out a *side* window.  Will make me rolf every time.  The trigger is usually pretty individual -- but either have him ABLE to look out a window or maybe **not** able to look out.  Luna does FAR better in my PT cruizer than she did in my Contour -- because she doesn't "look out" ....

to desensitize this you need to do it in TINY increments.  Get in and out of the car only.  Then just ride 10' to the mail box.  then back out of the driveway and back in ...

No food before.  GIVE something calming (either the Calms Forte or even something like valerian root tincture (works in about 5 minutes -- and 2 droppersful would be fine for a mastiff). The valerian is a relaxant not a sedative.

But trail it out over weeks t0 desensitize.  It will take you a week to even get around a block.  Keep it very short.  notice what trips his trigger -- stop and go is bad?  Does he get wigged at lights?  or is he fine until you swerve or switch lanes.

When my airsick-prone BF and I were flying to Spain (we didn't actually get there, long story) we used the Calms Forte. They knocked me out pretty well and I slept like a baby. BF said they didn't affect him at all, but he didn't puke the whole trip, so I think they worked for him too! You can also get them at a lot of local drugstores. Smile
