    what to feed?

I would like to know a good brand of dry food that is not to expensive and is available in most pet stores,i.e. petsmart, etc.  I have a Boston Terrier and she is very picky. I want to feed something that is good for her. I guess I am not very informed on different types and brands of food. I was feeding Science Diet small bites, lamb and rice formula, but she no longer eats it. She held out 3 days one time.

    Re: what to feed?

I don't buy food from these stores, but I know there are some good foods available there.  Here's a partial list for you:

Petsmart: Blue Buffalo (maybe others will know of other brands there)

Petco: Natural Balance, Solid Gold, Wellness, some stores carry Eagle Pack

Now these are going to be more expensive that Science Diet, but keep in mind that the superior ingredients and absence of fillers means you don't have to feed as much, so your bag will last longer.

Check them out, pick one to try, and give it a month or so to see how it's working.  Not all foods are good for all dogs, sometimes you have to do a trial-and-error process to find the right fit for your pup.

    Good luck!

    Re: what to feed?

The ONLY food that Petsmart carries that I would use is the Blue.

You have to look not so much at the price per bag but the cost of feeding.  With the better quality foods, which have no fillers, no corn, wheat, soy, grain fragments or grain glutens, you are able to feed a whole lot less.  A 30 lb bag of Blue lasts me about 8 days, but, I'm feeding that to 6 german shepherds who probably eat more in one day than your little dog woould eat in a week or more!

Actually, the last time I saw a display out in the middle of the store, Science Diet was about the same price as the Blue, NB etc.

    Re: what to feed?

I just switched to Taste of the Wild because it's an inexpensive, high quality, holistic food. My other choice would be Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul.

We feed Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul and have had a lot of luck with it. Chicken Soup gets a 5 star rating from Dog Food Analysis too if you want to check out the reviews.

My concern with both Taste of the Wild and Chicken Soup is that they are made by Diamond.  Diamond is not a company I have ANY faith in.

I think TOTW is great and I completely trust Diamond. The companies that I DON'T trust are Nutro, Solid Gold, and Merrick.

I get my dog food at Agway, if you have one of those near you :)

Available at Petco, my BF's family feeds Natural Balance dog food, and their dog looks fantastic on it.

Glenmar - Chicken Soup is made by Diamond pet food and Diamond puts all of their foods through a 151 Quality Check process to ensure the quality and safety of the food.  We have had our dog on the food for awhile now and we have not had any problems.

    Re: what to feed?

We are trying Blue Wilderness by The Blue Buffalo Co.    The analysis says its 42% protein. I wonder if thats too high or if there is such a thing as too high. She eats it but not very heartily. In fact she usually holds out for a day or day and a half before she will eat.  I am offering 1/2 cup in morn and 1/2 cup @ night.

    Re: what to feed?

Wilderness is a wonderful food.  Last winter I put Thunder on it since he tends to really drop weight in the winter and he did FANTASTIC.  I just got an email from BB today talking about their Longevity for dogs.  I've seen it in the store for cats but didn't really investigate since my cats eat BB Wilderness.  You *might* be offering your Boston a bit too much.  The kcals on Wilderness are well over 500 per cup...I'm thinking 580 or 590 kcals per cup, and Thunder was only getting 3 C per day and he's around 80 lbs.

DogPark, I know who makes Chicken Soup.  I mentioned it in my post.  There are just some companies that I don't trust with my dogs welfare, and Diamond is one of those, Merrick and Nutro a couple others.
