    Favorite new kibble!

I needed to find a different food for Jetta b/c she was getting chubby and slightly itchy again since its summer time. Jetta is limited on what foods she can eat b/c of her allergies to barley, flax, and brewers yeast (which are in a LOT of foods, even the allergy-formulas like natural balance).  She was eating TOTW but it was too high in fat for her, so i needed something else. I went back to Royal Canin for a while b/c its lower in fat and calories, but I'm really not a fan of that food or the company.

My local Target started carrying Petguard products, and i decided to give it a try. WOW!! Jetta loves it and she looks great. She has less tear staining than on the TOTW!  I am using the Lifespan kibble (she can't have the organic formula).

I think I am gonna stick with this food for a while b/c she has never had this great results in such a short time. Plus, with only 350 calories/cup Jetta is losing a bit of weight!

Shamrockmommy do you still use this kibble? I know you used to with great results too. Its funny how both your bichons and my bichon do great on this particular brand than any other food.

That's great news for Jetta; I've always heard good things about it from those that use Petguard; Jessie can't have it because of her allergies. I hope Jetta continues to do well on the food.

It is a nice food, my cats really love the wheat germ and chicken too.

I saw that at Target, the other day, and got all silly, thinking maybe Em could eat it. She couldn't, but I was really thrilled to see it as an option.

Could Em eat the canned variety? The ingredients are  a bit different--Jetta can't have the canned.

Emma can't eat rice. That pretty much rules out everything, LOL!

    Re: Favorite new kibble!

I do rotate to it from time to time, and my dogs do really really great on it as well. That is the ONLY food they won't get tear stains or yeasty ears/lip folds/feet on. Right now I'm trying them on BlueBuff's salmon/potato food and they look about the same as on california natural lamb/rice with a yeasty ear on Darby and yeasty lip folds and some tear staining. I have always liked PetGuard's foods (dry/canned) and their customer service is great. I HOPE that because it's now in Target that the food won't cheapen in some way.

    Re: Favorite new kibble!

I sent an email to PetGuard last night saying how much I liked the food and hope that the quality will not change since now it's in a big box store. I received a phone call a few minutes ago from PetGuard! She said, not to worry, the quality will NOT change. Target was looking to fill shelf space with a high quality food, because there is so much empty space from recalled foods. They have only the 8lb bags carried there. I told her how well my dogs (and Jettas too) do on the food and she said they work very hard to keep hidden ingredients like MSG out of foods- that dog food companies don't have to list. Anyway, a very nice call, I have always liked their great customer service! I'll probably get back to PetGuard once the blue buff and california natural are gone (both bags are 15 lbs) because Darbs is having yeast issues again. Soo glad Jetta is doing well on it, I've always liked this food!

That's great! The company really does have excellent customer service. I emailed them with a question and they responded the same day and were very helpful. I am so glad Target started carrying it and hope its not just a temporary thing!

    Re: Favorite new kibble!

It sounded like it was going to be on a shelf to fill the 'natural pet food' niche, so guessing it's maybe a permanent thing... ? I went ahead and returned the bluebuffalo fish/sweet potato because Darby's ears are raging- I know it could also be environmental but it has a lot of other ingredients than it would have you believe. I called my local health food store and ordered another bag of Petguard, and for now I have a bag of California Natural lamb/rice that she does ok on, which I will rotate to every now and again. It really makes me wonder what sorts of 'hidden' ingredients are in other pet foods and how they affect the dogs. Scary stuff. Food dyes and MSG really bother ME, so I can imagine how some dogs must feel, yeesh.

    Re: Favorite new kibble!

I know exactly what you mean with Blue Buffalo causing ear infections/ itchiness.   Jetta did horrible on that food, I think because it has so much "stuff" in it ( not to mention two things that she is allergic to).  I appreciate that Petguard is relatively simple.

I hope Darby's ears feel better soon!

    Re: Favorite new kibble!

Thanks, I cleaned her ears tonight so hopefully that will help, poor girl. I am so glad to hear Jetta's doing well on the food, because it is one I swear by, time and again! :) Yay!
