    Fish oil brands/forms/etc.

    Survey time!

For those of you who like to supplement your dog's omega-3 supplies, what do you use, where do you get it, and what do you like/dislike about it?

    Thanks :)

I use fish oil capsules.   In the past I've used Carlson Labs Norwegian Salmon Oil but have switched to Monica Segals Wild Salmon Oil.  I choose these two because (a) capsules keep better than pump oil - less oxidation.   (b) they both use only WILD salmon oil (c) these two give lab assay results showing the amt of contaminants.       I actually trust Monica's a little more - so I use her's now exclusively.

I use capsules, fish body oil (that's important, not cod liver oil).  I buy whatever human good quality I can get from a variety of sources (Puritan's Pride, Mother Nature, com, House of Nutrition).  I and my husband are both on it as well as the dogs, and the kitty gets one a week also in his food.  Besides ensuring that it is wild caught fish (mine is usually anchovy and sardine), I look for the highest concentration possible of EPA and DHA, as that's the best buy for one's money.  Fish oil capsule time has become treat time here since Lynn came.  Before she came I had to go through eleborate measures to hide the things, but she eats them like candy and the rest of the dogs started following her lead.

Ben gets a special brand that is non-allergenic.

Brookcove - where do you get the non-allergenic fish oil capsules and what is the name please? I think I would like to try those. Layla had a reaction to the flaxseed I gave her the other night. She was panting heavily and very restless, would not calm down and it was midnight. She was also reverse sneezing, but not full-on, just like mini reverse sneezing for a while. I could not get her to calm down. It was very obviously from the flaxseed as it started about 45 minutes to an hour after I gave it to her. I was fully prepared to take her to the e vet. They need a supplement for their itchy skin (Florida grass) and coats. I want to eliminate the supplement that I put in their yogurt every morning especially now that I know they will swallow it in liverwurst. Thanks so much!!

    Re: Fish oil brands/forms/etc.

Both my holistic vets have cautioned me not to over-do fish oil.  And to switch it off now and then (don't use one thing exclusively).

Flax you have to be SUPER careful on -- because the human "cold pressed" flax will often produce a nasty diarreha (at the least) reaction in dogs,

The actual fish tends to be the best source -- sardines, anchovy and jack-mackerel.  I do that as often as possible.  I try not to give a pill supplement more than once or twice a week.

Try something -- at any health store usually they will carry Hylands homeopathics.  Try Hylands "Hives" formula -- it's cheap, has absolutely NO ill effects (no sleepiness, no drymouth, nothing like that) because it's a homeopathic.

Just put one under your own tongue -- it's sweet and not at all unpleasant.  I offer them as treats.  But they are GREAT to help the itchies from the contact allergens.  Hylands also has a "Hayfever" formula I alternate with it -- they're easy and without side effects.

The only down side is they don't last long -- you have to give about 4S a day.

Do **not** give in food -- it is supposed to dissolve in the mouth.  You can crush the tablet and just sprinkle on the tongue or just let them chew them up.  My whole bunch think they are candy.

The other one that really helps is one of Hylands "singles" - "Hypericum".  Very soft little low dose pellets -- 3-4 of them.  But they reduce that tingle that the histamines make in the skin of the feet -- calms Billy down right away.

But don't touch the pellets -- just tap them onto the floor or into the cap and then just toss in their mouths -- like I said - they are not at all unpleasant.

I like Iceland Pure's oil, a lot, but I won't buy the same thing twice in a row. I use Barlean's Flax For Animals, occasionally. I buy good fish oil capsules at the health food store. This time, I'm getting Bravo's fish oil. As long as it smells good, I'll use it. I'm bigger on variety than anything else.

Of course, now I have a dog with hair. Dang brat is getting fish oil in her crest. She's about to start wearing a snood while she eats.... *sigh*

I'm using Grizzly salmon oil at the moment... It's the most convenient for me to buy, since they sell it at the store I buy dog food. Capsules are too big of a pain for me. Cherokee won't eat them, so I have to poke (OMG @ pr.ick being bleeped! I always forget! lol) and squirt, and I always end up with fish oil on my hands...bleh. One of these days I'll remember to order a better brand online.. I like the "pharmaceutical grade" ones.

     Thanks, everyone!

Rascal had been getting some fish oil and vitamin E for a while (vitamin E twice a week maybe, fish oil maybe 4-5 times a week, ish), but he ALWAYS seemed to get the fish oil in his ear fringes and it would make him totally reek, so I stopped. But he does tend to have mildly dry skin, and the vet said that omega-3 supplements would be good to keep down inflammation in his arthritic neck, so....

For those of you who do capsules, the vet also suggested freezing them before feeding them - apparently it makes them digest lower down in the intestines or something and reduces "fish burps."

I've not tried feeding him whole sardines - I'll give that a shot and see if maybe he'll do better at eating the fish instead of wearing it. Stick out tongue I just *hate* the smell of fish oils!

Fish is a good choice.  you can check the amount of omega 3s in nutritiondata.com.   Its going to take a decent amt of fish to get a therapeutic level of fish oil tho.    I used to *** the capsules for Prancer.  The "trick" to pricking them is to use a bulletin board push pin - very NOT messy - no spatter, no muss and you can control the amt of oil that comes out by changing the pressure of your squeeze.   I would bet that you wouldn't have to squeeze at all for enough aroma to get out to get Rascal interested (but it wouldn't be enough for YOU to smell it).   I don't even have th *** them anymore - now I just hand them to her and she gives it one chew and its down the hatch.   I don't think she's actually breaking the capsule since she never has fishy breath.

I use Seapet fish oil with vitamin E, that I order from www.seapet.com. I like that it is super-concentrated so I don't have to use a lot of (because it can make one dog vomity, and vomited fish oil is pretty bad). The only downside is the bottle cap leaks, even though they've changed it, so I keep it in a ziploc bag so any run-off collects in the bag and I don't have to touch a slimy bottle.

I sooo feel your pain on the ear fringes. Ena doesn't have ear fringe, yet, but she has a crest. She dips it in her food bowl, every time she eats. I feed raw. Blech!

I use Grizzly Salmon oil also, but we rotate what the oil is regularly. Rosco does best when he gets coconut oil everyday (it helps keep yeasty ears away), and we use flax, and olive oil too. At the moment, it's Salmon oil in the AM and coconut in the PM.

It's just a better life with dogs.

I do love Iceland Pure but $$$!  I'm thinking of getting some salmon oil for Ben though as sometimes he will still leave his capsules and he takes four at a time!

I like this brand though I get different brands depending on whether I can get them where I am - the one I was actually talking about before was Nature's bounty, that I think I got at CVS.

This is my fav though: http://www.houseofnutrition.com/basifioil10.html  It's preserved with natural E and rosemary oil.

Bugsy loves him some feesh oil LOL Currently we (the whole household) are using Costco Fish Oil capsules.  I use a corn cob holder to poke it and squeeze it on his food but he will just eat it without that - this is when it can get messy though.  Recently he chewed one and it squirted out of his mouth - fortunately he was very happy to lick the cabinets Big Smile

I tried flax and that gave him horrible gas - I mean horrible.  he doesn't get fish burps, breath or gas from the capsules I guess we are lucky with that.
