I'm not sure where to begin

My friend and co worker called me tonight crying.  She had taken her 13 year old daughter to the beach today for a fun day because it was her birthday.  The kids were swimming in the water--which is the ocean--and the current pulled her daughter out and under.  It's so horrible.  But, she was deprived of oxygen for too long.  She's brain dead.  My friend's family is coming up from NY tonight and I'll get more info later or tomorrow.

Can you guys please say a prayer? My friend, her mom, is very religious so I know she'd appreciate them right now.

She was 13--how do you recover from something like this??  I can't imagine.

    Thanks.

    Lori

I'm sending up a prayer for your friend, Lori.  I cannot imagine what she is going through right now.  Stay strong for her, Lori.  She's going to need a good friend to help her through this horrible time.

There are literally no words to describe how hearing this is making me feel.  Your friend and her daughter and their family are deeply within my thoughts tonight.  I hope and pray that there is still hope for a full life for that young girl--that brain function returns.

Re: I'm not sure where to begin

Thank you guys.  I'm having a hard time sleeping tonight.

I got a call and the update is that a neurology resident checked her out and she had a CT scan.  There is some brain function still there!  Thank God.  But, she's having seizure after seizure even heavily sedated.  They are trying to stop the seizures with medication but so far it's not really helping.

It's still not really looking all that good for her.  They are telling my friend that they need to wait and see if there is any swelling over the next 24 hours or so.  She's still in a lot of danger.

I've been reading online about brain injury and oxygen deprivation from near drowning--I'm trying to find something to give her some hope.  But, reality is this girl might come out of it, she might live but be brain damaged or she could still die over the next couple of days.

She was turning 14 this weekend.  I was trying to get more info from my friend but as you can imagine she's just beside herself.

But, thank you all so much for your thoughts and prayers.  I'm in shock myself I can't imagine how my friend and her family feel.  It's something I can't understand not having children myself.

My prayers are with them and my candle lit.  No parent should have to go through this, and I can't imagine having to.  Praying for recovery for this young girl....

Re: I'm not sure where to begin

I know she is not ready now,  but I have used this group for friends and clients.  I have always heard very positive things about the help received.

http://www.compassionatefriends.org/  (my apologies, I had not read the update).

As to the brain trauma, the most difficult issue will be the fact she will not be the same person after she recovers. Preparation for the rehab period and strategies for dealing with the emotional challenges will be critical,  One of the toughest things involved the fact many memories are intact, so the person is aware they are different and have an understanding of what has been lost.

Prayers for acceptance on the way.
