    Teaching Frisbee

Buckel (18-mo-old mini schnauzer) loves to chase a flying frisbee, but can't catch it in the air.  He always waits for it to fall, then picks it up and brings it back.  How do I train him to catch it out of the air?

toss it to him from a foot away. Praise for catch. Repeat. You might need to develop his eye-mouth coordination, toss him treats to catch too.

or roll it along the ground so he can "catch" it while rolling.  If it's a hard frisbee, try a soft one.  It may be that he is not so sure about catching something hard.

Also, teach yourself to throw floaters. If you throw the frisbee just right and have it float for a bit, the dog will be more likely to jump and grab it rather than wait for it to drop. If you're consistent with your throws he'll learn where it's going to be in the air and anticipate it better.

Throw rollers for a while.  Small dogs can take a bit longer to develop the spacial coordination required to catch flyers and even floaters.  You can get small-sized frisbees which are even regulation in IDDHA (not sure about the other competitive orgs and series).  These are better than soft frisbees, which can teach some bad habits and also make your dogs unwilling to play with anything else.  Not to mention the fact that floppies fly like rocks.  Big Smile  Get a Hyperflite and you will never want to toss anything else - here's a source for pupper size Hyperflites: http://www.mightymitedoggear.com/discs.html
