    Cuts type canned food

Does anyone know of any decent brands of canned foods that have cuts of meat and not the loaf type consistency?  I know of Merrick and homestyle Wellness but they contain veggies and Willow can't eat them without getting sick (from the veggie).  So, does anyone know of any that are just meat or maybe meat and a carb or rice or something like that??

    Thanks.

Blue Buffalo has a new "homestyle" line. I don't know if it contains veggies or not, though.  Doesn't Evanger's make some cuts in gravy food, too?

How about a few of the ByNature pouches---there is a beef/salmon formula and a lamb/chicken formula----neither has veggies.  I can't remember if Willow can eat sweet potato---byNature also has pouches with pork/sweet potato and duck/sweet potato---no other veggies added--they may work, provide she can eat sweet potato.

How about Wysong?  I'm not sure, but they used to have a cuts type canned line--can't remember if it contained veggies, though.

Ah ha! By Nature pouches. Some of them are meat, gravy, and vitamins. A little small for a meal, but if you're using them with other food...

    Re: Cuts type canned food

I'd be so scared of cuts and gravy type food right now.  Is there any reason you can't just throw some stew meats in a crock pot for a day or so?  If you put in (depending on what she can tolerate) rice, potato, or corn starch or flour, the juice will make as nice a gravy as you could want.  Then you have full say in type of meat, and type of starch, and can only use what you know she'll tolerate.  And it's SO much cheaper!

Then you just freeze it up in those wee little save-n-serve things they make now - I love those!  Or, you can freeze them in well-greased muffin tins, pop them out, and bag up the frozen "muffins" together and just thaw them as needed (a somewhat more "green" method).

I'm assuming this would be for a topper and not as a major portion of her diet.  If you had to balance this, though, it's not too hard with some supplements (under guidance of experts via literature or consultation).

    Re: Cuts type canned food

Is there still something to be concerned about with the foods still?  I thought they had resolved the ingredient problems?

She is getting mostly homecooked now but I also want something I can buy if I need too.  And, also, the amount of meats I'm needing to buy to keep up with her is a little crazy.

I'd like to give her dog food in the morning and homecooked at night.  But, she is very fussy about what types of dog food she'll eat.  And, it has to be canned she can't tolerate kibble for long anymore.  She seems to like either the cuts type stuff which I can't seem to find that are decent or the supplemental only type all meat toppers.

Willow needs to come hang out here. I'm having a DANG hard time making food for one dog. I just can't do it! I made 20 lbs of dog food, yesterday, and I know Emma won't eat it before it goes bad, so I froze part of it. I think I'm going to go get some silicone muffin tins to freeze chunks of food in.

Poor Willow tummy. I'll definitely keep an eye out for foods that she might tolerate. It's hard, not being able to eat veggies.  Most of the high end companies add veggies to their foods. I looked at Nature's Variety's new line of homestyle canned, and even that has veggies in it.

I know that's the whole problem with my choices is the veggies.

Jennie--The only time I ever have enough for the week or enough for the week plus to freeze is when I cook a turkey for her.  I've tried getting those big buy beef cuts too but they are so fatty she gets all nauseated and won't eat after a day or so.

I know.  I don't understand why the premium companies charge so much for a can of watery veggies, potatoes, and a few chunks of meat.  And Ben can't eat half the stuff they put in those formulas, either.

Watch for deals on whole roasts, bone in slabs of meat you can simmer and bone, and other large packages.  Then you just cook once for a long while.

Willow can do egg, right?  If you drop an egg or two into a pot of meat broth, then stir well, that makes a soupy gravy as well that is very yummy for almost all dogs.

When I go out, I just pop the frozen chunk-o-stews in individual baggies (freezer bags, not the flimsy sandwich baggies, marked BEN ONLY or NOT BEN).  If someone else feeds, everything is fixed up in individual servings and ready to go per instructions - even if I didn't plan on someone else having to do dinner.

This was very handy this week, as I was laid up with a horrendous stomach bug and was so sick I could hardly even move, for several days.  All Patrick had to do was consult the diet sheet and find the stuff in the freezer!  He much prefers this to hunting up the right can of this and the correct kibble, and adding this and that and then his raw meaty bone on top of it all.

    Re: Cuts type canned food

Oh, gosh. I had a big hunk of beef, a big hunk of pork, two tubs of turkey hearts, a tub of turkey livers, and a dozen eggs. Plus veggies. I've gotta quit buying so much. It was too much for TWO dogs. Now, it's just ridiculous. I could always get a few more dogsWink I don't think that would go over so great (though Emma has developed a big love for Chinese Cresteds).

So, what do you make for Willow? Does she just do meat with rice or potato or something? I've never made food without veggies. Emma tolerates veggies pretty well, if they're total mush. Some veggies have to be cooked, then mushed. Greens can be raw, and mushed. Anything that's a root has to be cooked, for her.

    Re: Cuts type canned food

can she eat fish?  I keep canned fish on hand for those days we run out of crockpot stew and I forget to thaw stuff out. If you can find cheap frozen fish you can cook it up rapidly as well, my dogs love "fish and scrambled eggs" emergency meals. How about game meats like rabbit? very lean. What about pork? some of the cheapest meat available here is pork- people think it's fatty, but if you trim the fat before cooking it's really quite a lean meat nowadays, and it falls apart so nicely in the crockpot.

Nature's Variety has homestyle cans as well.  We tried the Chicken, & my guys loved it.

I'm sorry that feeding Willow is getting harder. Have you consulted with Monica Segal;  http://www.monicasegal.com/catalog/consultations.php?osCsid=69821865484320bcbd67d3b84bb927f8

    or a nutritionist on petdiets.com;
    https://www.petdiets.com/consult/default.asp?ConsultType=Nutritional%20Consultation

I know someone who used petdiets.com, and they worked with her for several months for the one-time fee. She uses Evanger's canned meats for the protein portion of the diet, which saves cooking time. The diets provided by the nutritionists at petdiets.com are easier to balance than Monica Segal's because they use a vitamin premix. You can tell them what she can tolerate and they will design the diet accordingly. I know this doesn't answer your question but thought it may help. Sending lots of tummy soothing vibes for Willow.

Thanks everyone.  I'm pretty much all set with the homecooked recipes for her.  I wanted to have some good meat only canned I could add in.  Thanks for the ideas, I'll look into the By Nature for her.

Gee Lori,,,, this is a toughie..   I know what you mean...to have some canned food on hand.....in case you need it.  BUT anything I buy has veggies in it....as was mentioned, premium companies all put them in...seems they think we want to feed our dogs veggies. And you know,,,I do want to feed Bubby some...I add them to her meat that I cook for her.

I will be going to the pet store tomorrow...I will SEARCH the shelves.
