Dog nail painting...is it safe? Am I a hypocrite if I let him go ahead with this?

Personally I feel its a waste of money. And I had a dog as a child that my mother would always have her nails painted when she was groomed and she would chip it off within 2 days.

I'm taking my dog for a nail trim and ear cleaning at the groomers, maybe even a bath. Before her charity costume contest and the groomer asked my husband if we would like her nails painted....and he told her sure that would be cute and to do them in red to go with her costume.

She goes tuesday morning for he spa day and then she has her contest that night.

I feel like such a hypocrite if we have that done but my husband is excited and thinks she is going to look so sweet in her costume with her painted nails.

I think she might look a little weird being that shes a 20lb Terrier dog and not the most girly looking. She is beautiful, toned, and has just the right amount of muscles. And I know she is a nail biter so she would probably have them ruined by the time she got home.

Should I let him have his fun? He thought he did something clever.

Does it make me a hypocrite. I mean I always drew the line at the costume thing.

The only dog we ever have at the groomer is a male so that is why I think he decided to do this, he thought it would be cute on his girl

    EDIT:  More info:
I didn't set the appointment up he did, and he is the one taking her too. So I just got a call a few minutes ago telling me what he set up

Should I let him have his fun?   How will this effect my dog?  I'm just iffy on the idea, very iffy

I've done nail painting on both my male and female dogs. You can see what I'm talking about here.

I guess i'm just a bit overprotective of her.

I've painted hundreds of doggy toenails, with no ill effects.  I've painted my own dogs' nails, for years. My Teenie Weenie LOVED having hers done. Emma digs hers off, and Ena Bean has hairy feet, so it doesn't show. My late GSD always had pink nails, and a pink bandana, to help tone down the "what a nice boy" comments.

Ginger has her nails painted purple about 90% of the time. (the 10 % without is when I'm too lazy to touch them up) No harm to her at all.  Dogs don't pay much attention to these things, it is humans with the hang ups. I"m not sure what being overprotective of her has to do with nail painting though..

If I had other girl dogs I'd paint their nails too. I'd paint the boys' nails but they all have ridiculously hairy feet, so it would be pointless. And I like Grimmy's muppet paws way too much to clip the hair off.

Nothing wrong or harmful with doggy nail painting. I used to paint my boy Collie's nails fairly often. I painted my girl GSD's nails a few times and the Belgians a few times. I also have glued on "earrings" which is very cute :)

I have even been known to occasionally add some very slight tint to a head full of blonde hair. Wink None of it does any harm, to them, and this particular dog ENJOYS being groomed, tremendously.

This is making me want to paint Onyx' nails.  I think I might give it a try tonight...hehe.

I wonder, would the nail drying spray stuff be harmful?  I use it when I do Kali's nails, cause it shortens setting time.

Nope, they sell it marketed to pets. Petedge carries it, and I always wondered if it worked. I just do nails under the stand dryer, and that's fast enough.

I don't see what it would hurt.  Then again I would paint Kirby's nails hotpink if it weren't for the fact I would have to shave all the hair off the top of his paws to even see it...

I've painted Kya's nails a few times before.  I've only tried the dog nail polish.  Chloe's feet are under too much fur.

Just IMO, but it's harmless and if it helps him build a bond with her, it's worth it.

Isn't that the truth?  If Meilani lived close to me, I'd be paying her to do my nails.
