    Re: Chore List

I try to do all my cleaning every Sat morning and it usually doesn't take me more than a couple hours. The bathrooms are a must. We have 2 and they're both always dirty. I would vacuum every day if I had the time, but I don't. It's pretty bad by the weekend. We stay on top of the dishes as we use them but we have a dishwasher, so it's easy. I rarely do all the windows but there are a couple that I do every week or so. I change the sheets every weekend. Re the spill issue. Unless I was going jump out of bed and change them right away, I don't see the point and that doesn't sound fun at all. Maybe we don't have as much spillage tho Wink.

I'm not OCD about cleaning but I do have issues and can't let it go. Every Sat. morning, my mom and my sister and I would get up and get the house clean. It's a fond memory of mine. After my mom died and my sister moved out, I was in charge of all of it. I was only 13 and felt like a little housewife. My dad wasn't one to heap loads of praise on you but he'd always compliment me on any of the cleaning I'd done. I've been cleaning house for a verrrryyyyy long time and although I don't always love doing it, I do love what it looks like when it's all done.

    Re: Chore List

(I can't get the formatting to work better, obviously my cut and paste didn't work well...)

o                                wash the dishes - whenever DH does them -- this is his job.  Usually a few times a week, but he grumbles about how gross it is, so then for a few days it's every day.

o                                clean the bathroom - once a week for our master bath, the downstairs half bath gets a once over when it needs it.  The other bathroom we don't use, so I check it for dust every few weeks Smile when I run the water

o                                vacuum/sweep - once a week usually.  It never LOOKS bad, but then I'm amazed at how much stuff it picks up.  Should be more often... but...

o                                mop the floor - roughly once a week.  stuff gets spilled and sticky, or wet dog paws.  Usually no time during the week for more than spot cleaning, so weekends it is.

o                                clean under the furniture/bed etc. Haven't done this since we moved in May -- I get what the vaccuum can reach and that's it!  Who looks under there anyway?

o                                change sheets  - Once a week or as needed.

o                                do laundry(and how many people's laundry do you do?) - Once a week, two adults and the dog.  We have enough clothes from college when we had to go to a laundromat that we can go nearly two weeks or more before running out of things.

o                                wash windows - I washed them once in 2 years at our old place but not at the house yet

o                                dust - when it's bad.  we have glass top stuff (hate it!) so it looks dirty all the time

o                               clean out inside couch -I don't think I ever have

o                                yard work (mowing, weeding, etc) - DH does most of this.  He mows when needed, every 1-2 weeks depending.  I take care of the miniscule landscaping when it needs it, maybe once a month.  Otherwise, we don't really care.

o                                any other chores I'm missing that you do on a regular or semi regular basis.
    •             Clean the stove top - again DH's area but at least once a week.  I cook, and I'm messy LOL
    •                  Clean inside of frig - when it's bad ( like now) or roughly once a month.  It's hard to clean when there's stuff in there, but it's never empty, and I hate to keep the door open..... so it's like a lost cause, unless there's a giant mess

DH hates clutter, so he's always after that, whereas I hate dirt, so I'm doing that.  It works OK, unless he makes a pile of random stuff and  a bill gets stuck in the middle and plopped on my desk never to be seen again.  Sigh.

Even now, I get SCREAMED at if I go to visit and put anything that has touched food into the regular trashcan. (See, everything that has touched food has to be put in a separate plastic bag and then stored in the freezer until trash day, so there is no chance of any trash odor.)

Now there's a woman to envy!  Can you imagine having so much freezer space that you can designate chunks of it to storing garbage!!! I clean out my fridge every Sunday (Monday is trash pick up) and dump all the stuff in little  containers into a plastic grocery bag and just toss it in the outside can. I figure if it has been there three or more days and nobody has eaten it yet, they're not likely to. Except for pizza.  Pizza is always good no matter how long it was in the fridge. Big Smile A few seconds in the microwave and it's good to go.

    Re: Chore List

For my father and step-mother, just the two of them (and one kibble-fed cat), they have THREE REFRIGERATORS. One normal one in the kitchen, one "extra" fridge/freezer in the garage, and one dedicated fridge-sized freezer in the garage. And they're thinking about getting another one. INSANITY!!! They don't even cook that much... how's that for a carbon footprint! Indifferent

    Re: Chore List

If I had that much freezer space I'd have it chock full of pre-cooked frozen stuff and microwaveable stuff and I'd never have to cook anything again. Big Smile I'll fess up to having a second refrigerator w/a top freezer in the laundry room.  I use it mainly for extra frozen stuff and for keeping soda cans and water bottles cold. I know ... not very green, but there's something to be said for always having ice cold water on hand.

    Re: Chore List

Hey for two people and 4 animals we have a regular fridge/freezer and a chest freezer - but that's mostly because DH likes to cook large batches of soup and pasta in the winter and then freeze in individual servings for lunches. Smile

    My honest answers:

    • wash the dishes: DH's job; the ones in the sink get done about once or twice/wk, the ones in the dishwasher get done every 2 days generally unless i forget to empty it lol.
    • clean the bathroom: DH's job since he's the messiest in there (toothpaste flecks on the mirror, etc.); he agreed to do it every other week but I'm lucky if it gets done once a month much to my chagrin.
    • vacuum/sweep: Vacuum once/wk, sweep the kitchen w/ vacuum once/wk as well
    • mop the floor: once in the 13 months we've been living in this house; we spot clean if something is dripped.
    • clean under the furniture/bed etc.: HAHAHAHA - let's just put it this way: when we had the new sofa delivered this week I discovered about half a dog under the old futon it was replacing.  I used the dustbuster to get up the worst and then had the new sofa put right over top of the rest!  Our bed is flush with the floor as DH is making our bed frame so nothing collects under there! Big Smile
    • change sheets: once/wk (DH and I both shower before bed)
    • do laundry(and how many people's laundry do you do?): once per week - I do my laundry and any dog stuff, DH does his to avoid conflict.
    • wash windows: when there is visible dog snot buildup Wink
    • dust: what's that?! (I only do it when I notice it and that is infrequently)
    • clean out inside couch: ummm never
    • yard work (mowing, weeding, etc): DH mows once every other week unless it needs it earlier, weeding i solve by heavy mulching.  I scoop poop once a week.
    • clean kitchen (stovetop, counters, sincks): about once/wk with spot cleaning as needed
    • clean microwave: once/month unless someone (not me) forgets to cover his food
    • clean out fridge: DH's job - once/mo on average
    • empty all trashcans: kitchen trash is done probably twice/wk, the rest of the cans are only emptied when I get tired of waiting for DH to do it Stick out tongue  At least he takes the outside can to curb each week.

    Re: Chore List

I came from a REALLY big family and we most often had smaller homes.  It is a Navy thing.  But Mom taught all of us early on if we wanted our weekends then we needed to pitch in .  Everyone of us went through a slob stage.  But for the most part everyone came out of it. :@}    Since I normally have people needing extra help living with us I had to learn to give people jobs, Even my 93 year old MIL had chores. While bedridden she still folded the baby's laundry every day. She would fold and refold it until it was perfect...made the idea of throwing your stuff in a chair seem the height of lazy.   You are never too young or too old to help. Period. Most of us have developed a system, something that just works for us.  There are only 5 of us in our home right now, But there was 10 for the last 3.5 years.  5 though is about average for our household, the ages may differ but yep 5 is about right.  Always 3 to 12 large dogs. 2800sq ft home, 4 bedrooms, 2.5 baths and a full dog room. Plus the RV which is 40 foot and needs cleaning before and after every dog show and trip. If not done it is a real pain in the  well you know...

When things are clicking we can keep things up in about 1/2 hour a day for the routine stuff.  Total cleaning time when our home is clean is never more than an hour and a half. There are guidelines or rules we adhere to however...

Beds HAVE to have sheets and pillow cases...  drives me batty when they are left off and I will raise the roof until it is corrected.

Dishwasher is broken but we wash dishes twice a day, right after breakfast and dinner.  As I cook I wash things to prevent piling up the sink.

Bathrooms are picked up daily,  fast wipe down on counter tops and trash emptied .  Toilets are cleaned every week ONE time... I can not use product in them because of the dogs and since we are on a well if I don't use Kaboom Foaming, about a 10 minute process once a week they tend to stain a rusty or blue shade...  I dump a cup in each then I go back to the first one scrub it while it is soaking in the rest.... by the time I get to the last one,  it is done.... all but the final flushing.. While scrubbing the bowl I pick up around the trash cans, wipe out the sink and if needed hit the mirrors. There are guest towels and family towels.

Floors are sweep daily,  the Italian Tile floors first ( Dog room, Kitchen, Pantry , Entry and my Back Door entry for the master bedroom.) Then the carpets.  Front Room  and Hallways. They are  Vac'ed 1- 2 xs a week.  But Picked up daily. Bedroom floors once every 2 weeks. again picked up daily.

Floors are mopped once a month , but we wipe up as things are spilled. So they stay nice and clean , since they are a light salmon color they need to be kept up or everything would show.

Once a month I check under beds and behind crates.... That is a 3 hour ordeal but I schedule it for a light day when I have nothing better to do..

Sheets are only changed once every two weeks.  ick I know... but I don't have the time and man power to do it more often since my laundry is a massive thing to begin with.. I have 2 sets per bed, new fresh one goes on, the other hits the laundry I make the beds then fold the clean sheets etc right out of the machines. Into the linen closet everything folded into a pillow case.  I buy GOOD sheets, high thread count so they can go a bit longer than normal. And everyone has a color scheme or theme this helps a ton when you do not have to  try to figure out what belongs where ..

Hubby does his own laundry once a week. I do mine. Daughter does hers and her 2 children's then the misc and dog  laundry is done as it piles up... About 14 loads min. a week.

Twice a year on windows. After hurricane season and early spring. I use the outdoor spray by windex to cut down on time spent as I have something like 24 double windows. That is a Bottle of Mix inside with about 4 rolls of paper towels.  I use ammonia or vinegar , cost every little and can be used on mirrors, counter tops and light fixtures.  When I do the Windows I do the Fan Blades as every room in our house has ceiling fans.

Dusting is a once every 60 days for rooms like the bar filled with knick knacks and beer bottles but once a week for table tops, computer tables, etc etc  TVs and monitors... the more you might look at something the higher the emphasis...

DE CLUTTER  counter tops a HUGE trick for making things easier...  I go through magazines and mail near the trash can. My magazine habit can get out of hand if not careful. This week I have to take a large bag to the local Wally world to recycle.

Cleaning the inside or under furniture cushions is done when I turn furniture over for cleaning one big upheaval...  I drag a trash bag, laundry basket and vacuum cleaner along with me and hit everything at one time.

Once a week the yard is tidied and mown about once every 2 weeks. My yard is not as perfect as I would like But it is nearly an acre and could keep a person busy daily with the weed whacker. I do NOT weed but I get rid of mushrooms and fungus to make sure the dogs don't eat anything they shouldn't I fill holes about once every 2-3 weeks. Pooh is picked up once a week... as I mentioned huge yard but the dorks like to potty on the carport and walkways if it has been rainy...

I have an entry area that has a place for library books , school things etc etc and  my doors are metal so they are basically huge bulletin boards with magnets. I go through and up date them every other week or so.

The top of the big screen TV, my work desk and the craft station are all done at the same time. Decluttered and dusted

The big rule is never walk through a room with out picking up  or putting away something.  No one goes to bed with out doing the same.  Grouping supplies,  outdoorsy stuff like swim fins snorkles and floaties in a tote,  sunglasses sunscreen etc the same way ....  Holidays are decorated for big time and  kept in labeled totes when not in use.  Magazines are in one area, craft supplies the same...

If you have time to lean you have time to clean...and God made portable phones so you can pick up and put away junk while gabbing with friends...

Cleaning supplies in job specific totes... Bathroom,  Kitchen, right down to microwave and stove.... This way your sponges don't cross over and  everything is at hand.  Extra trash bags under the ones being used in every trash bin. If you have to stop to grab a new one chances increase you may procrastinate.

Do NOT get overwhelmed... Just get into a habit and teach the rest of your household to get into it as well... If they don't have to lose a whole day because they pick up daily they are more likely to help when needed.

When you feel like you are behind take it one chore or room at a time and begin with what you see first.   Give yourself time frames. 10 minutes to pick up all the floors, Then stop messing with picking up but instead grab the vac.  10 minutes or 15 to vac everything. does not have to be perfect when you are catching up. Just keep going.  If you say Sh*T I have to clean the Whole house IT IS overwhelming. If you say I have 15 minutes before my tv show comes on or so and so gets home  it is just 10 minutes not a huge fence to hurdle.

Good Luck !!  Oddly a tidy home doesn't have to be spotless , just getting it uncluttered makes a huge difference!

I vacuum daily - no choice with 4 dogs.

Mop, dust, dishwasher, declutter - 1x per wk

Main rooms get cleaned once a week. Spare rooms once a month

Sheet changes every 3rd day. Laundey never ends. Windows get done 4x per year

    Re: Chore List

Great suggestions, Bonita!  Yep.  Getting rid of the clutter is more than half the battle IMO. And you have to be ruthless.  If you can't find a place to put it, toss it ... and you have to force yourself to not look at each little thing and think "Oh, someday I might use this." If you haven't been using it, you most likely won't need it.  Having said that, last summer when the new carpet went in and the installers had to take my bed apart and move it, I almost died on the spot from embarrassment. It looked like an army had been camping under there. In my own defense, I have to say the combination of bad knees, short arms and a CA King sized bed don't make cleaning under it easy. I consoled myself with the fact that they had most likely seen worse Embarrassed and I'm making an effort not to let things slide under there at all.

    Re: Chore List

Great Suggestions Everyone.  Bonita, its great to see you!  Maybe I've just been missing your posts lately?

Anyway, I've really been trying to do the 15 minutes a day thing...or rather 15 minutes a day in 3 different rooms, 45 minutes total, to just try to catch up.  My bathroom is pretty good now, on a regular basis it takes me maybe 5 minutes to make it shine each day.

Kale has taken the responsibility of his own room, as well as taking part when I set the timer for whatever room I'm working on.  I have a bunch of slips of paper with a room written on each, that sit in a bowl on the kitchen island and we draw from that to see what room we get.  Its like a game, and he'll do that over DS time...crazy kid.

Kali likes to tidy.  And she likes to "Help" most of the time.  She likes to help with laundry, and folds face cloths for me.  She also loves to wipe the table because to do so, she has to get right on top of it.  Recently she has started making her own bed too!

And Kelci...well, I'm lucky if she doesn't throw her bowl on the floor when she's done eating...and her spoon, cup and bib.  sigh...  But she has recently taken an interest in the laundry too.  We're streamlining that procedure though.  For intance we take the dry clothes out of the dryer, not the ones that are still wet that mommy is transfering from the washer...Oh and Garbage.  She love love loves to empty garbage.  Of course, I'd rather she emptied it into the big garbage can that goes outside, but I suppose the bathtub is similar...Stick out tongue  Raise hands, who here has to keep their bathroom garbage on the counter?

LOL. I had to do that until I got one of those annoying cabinet locks. Now it's under the sink.

Since we had a dusting of snow, my list now has "clean up dog & kid toys outside, put dead plant pots in the shed."

    Re: Chore List

I'm feeling like such a nasty person after reading all your replies.  Ugh, almost embarassed to admit this stuff.  I don't think I would ever say I was a clean freak but I am a very very neat freak.  Stuff has it's place, put it there!  Not tomorrow, not next week, now!  Our house isn't nearly as bad as this list will make it sound.

    huskymom:
    • wash the dishes - when there are dishes to do.  Allowing them to sit overnight is just a no-no.
    • clean the bathroom - once every other week or as needed.
    • vacuum/sweep - vacuum every other week.  Sweep rarely unless you consider Swiffer vacuuming sweeping, in which case I do that pretty regularly.
    • mop the floor - my very least favorite chore so it gets done very infrequently.  Once a month maybe?  Nasty, I know, but I can't bring myself to do it more and BF surely isn't going to do it.  He didn't even own a mop.
    • clean under the furniture/bed etc.  - people do this?  That generally happens when something gets moved, even if that means moved from one house to another.
    • change sheets - every other week, sometimes more.  Precious little cooking going on here but that's another topic all together.
    • do laundry(and how many people's laundry do you do?)  - weekly, for two adults.
    • wash windows  - hahahahahaha, oh, you're serious?  Spoty door glass from dog noses gets done weekly.  Others?  Not so much.
    • dust - when it starts to look bad.  Or when company is coming over.
    • clean out inside couch  - I actually did do this once every few months when I lived by myself (lots of Joey hair!).  But BF's hideous couches are made so that nothing can really get down into them.
    • yard work (mowing, weeding, etc) - BF's job.  We have a decent yard that's very low maintence.  And we have sorry neighbor's on both sides that only mow/edge when a small child might get lost walking through so comparatively, ours always looks fantastic!
    • any other chores I'm missing that you do on a regular or semi regular basis. - cleaning out the fridge happens about once a month.

    Sincerely,

This thread has made me really, really, really wish we could hire a maid, lol!

Oh, and FTR, we've owned our house for 5 years now.  I've cleaned the windows on the inside a few times, but BF has YET to clean them on the outside.  Oh, and did I mention we own a window cleaning company???  I guess it's like they say how mechanics never want to work on their own cars....window cleaners never want to clean their own windows, lol.
