    puppy training

    Hi,

I just picked up my teacup yorkie yesterday. He is 13 weeks old and started crate and potty training already. He walks well on a leash too. He has been here for 18 hours now. He peed when I first brought home (6:00pm) and didn't again until 10:30 pm. I have been taking him out every two hours or more, he did poop in his crate last night. (He went in at 11:00 pm and I got him out at 6:00 am). My concern is that we are in Michigan and the weather is turning colder, I think he is hesitant to go out in the colder weather, any suggestions? What do you do with a small dog in the snow?

You'll probably need a warm coat or sweater for him, and when the snow does fly, shovel an area for him to potty.

I left MI not too many months ago.  Am thrilled not to have to deal with another MI winter!

I think he needs to go outside and build up his endurance to cold. If you keep him warm up against you he will get used to your warmth, there for, I would suggest taking him outside for a few minutes every hour about 6 to 8 times an hour... Once he is more comfortable, you can inscrease the time intervals. His coat will slowly build up and his paw resistance also. It is hard, if possible when you put him outside, have him out on a sheltered side of the house where the winds arn't as strong. They do sell paw protectors as in slippers or even a liquid, I would not recommend these products because he needs to build his endurance.

Just dont stay out too long! 2 or 3 minutes will do it! Good Luck, with your new puppy!

    Whats its name?

Also -- depending on his prior training a 13 week old dog may or may not be able to 'hold it' all night long.  So be patient -- hopefully his crate is in your room -- listen for him to be rattling around so YOU know when to take him out!!
