    Urgent help...anyone?

Rory just came in from being outside and shes holding her eye shut. I dont know if a cat got here, there was one on the fence, if she crashed into something or if she just brushed against a plant that may have bothered her or something else... We tried to open it but we dont see anything, we rinsed it with water but shes still holding it shut. I called the E-vet, of course they same come in but they also said they are swamped it and the wait would be hours. Should we just wait to take her in until the morning to our regular vet? Should i put some saline drops in? I have no idea what to do!

I'd just ascertain that the eye is there in the socket...there is no bleeding or obvious foreign body...flush it with saline solution or boric acid solution (CVS carries that). I suppose if you happened to have mineral oil on hand a drop in the eye might help coat and ease the pain some...

I'd probably wait til morning UNLESS it swelled markedly, puss or blood issued forth...or the eye was displaced from the socket.

Thank you Gina. Yes, her eye is still in the socket, no blood, no visible foreign object and its not swollen (as of now). Why do these things always have to happen at night when everything is closed???

Last nite we rinsed with saline and she held it open for a few mins after that but went back to squinting. This morning she's still holding it partly closed, but its not swollen or goopy or anything. We'll call the vet as soon as he opens and have it checked out.

good...I would bet it's some sort of corneal abrasion or a foreign body maybe under one of the lids. Those can move around a bit and then you feel okay and then you feel TERRIBLE lol. LIke when you get an eyelash in.

Is she pawing at it all?

No, she hasnt been pawing at it.  DH is taking her in at noon today, so a few more hours to go.  He did say when I just talked to him that she's opening it a little bit more now.  So thats good I think.  =)

yes very. They will probably do a stain to look for abrasions...they can reaaally hard to see if they're minor. I had a bitch with an abrasion and it was pretty easily handled with two different eyedrops....one dilated her eyes so direct sunlight was a no no for a bit.

Best of luck at the vet, sweet lil hound girl!

Kenya had a squinty, weepy eye (it weeped constantly but was clear, not like the eye infection goo).  They stained it and didn't find anything, but gave me some soothing drops anyway and those really helped, she was fine after a day.  They said b/c it had been really windy and dry in our area, she probably had an abrasion or a piece of dust stuck in there that bothered her.

The vet said she does have a small scratch on her eye, but it should heal fine.  They gave us some ointment to apply.  Poor baby!  Just glad she's okay.  Maybe she needs some doggy goggles to tear through her new backyard.  =)  Thanks for the help & concern!

And they can get into the darnest stuff.

I will never forget - one time Muffin the Intrepid went snuffling near the BBQ grill.  He "snuffed" enough to SNEEZE which then blew ash everywhere.  IN his eyes.

When I found him ... literally just a little bit later .... it looked like his eyes were rolled back in his head.  It looked like he was dead standing up!! No joke.

They have what they call a "third eyelid" that comes up from the bottm!!  It's protective and will come up when the eye is really sore sometime.  But it LOOKS soooooooooooooooo bad.

Muffin had pawed at it long enough that he'd embedded a piece of ash pretty deep -- but he'd irritated BOTH eyes.  I can remember I was terrified.  And it healed well, but I will never forget how bad that looked and it was just that 'third eyelid' thing.

Ahhh the things you learn ....

LOL yes, that third eyelid is pretty weird!   The first whole day we were at hte new house, she spent so much time outside sniffing/smelling everything that she came in with watery eyes and was sneezing like crazy!  Poor thing, sniffed herself sick!  At least I know she's senstive to outdoor allergens when she sniffs too much and have antihistime on hand.  She's not allowed out there for all day sniff-a-thons anymore!
