    Hello from Germany :)

     Hey,

I'm Susi, 16 years old and live with my family in Bonn, Germany. I visit next year (now I've got summer holidays) the 9th class at a grammar school.

My english is not perfect, but I try to understand what you write here ;) I hope that my english will be better when I'll read and write here something ;)

My dog is Charly, he will be this October 3 years old. He's a mix of a Pudel and Yorkshire Terrier. Together we are going this Friday to start "Funagility" with other People. And I make Trickdogging with him :)

In my free time I visit a draw course at my school and I like to take photos :)

I hope you understand what I write and if I make mistakes, please correct me ;)

    Lovely Greetings,

    Susi and Charly

Guten Tag, Susi und willkommen!  Ich bin Sue.  OK, I can't think in German as fast as I type, so I'll give up now.  I probably made mistakes in what I typed anyway.  My last German class ended a long time before you were born.  Big Smile  Your English is very good.  It's a lot better then some Americans.  I'm looking forward to hearing more about you and Charly, and, hopefully seeing pictures.

    Hi Susi!!

What a *great* idea for you to better your English as you make friends!!  America has many parts that were settled by German immigrants, so there is much German influence here (my own family background is strongly German).

English is a complicated language, as is German.  Much of the difference is that we might turn phrases differently than you would.  Honestly that doesn't make something "wrong" -- more that it simply makes it sound unfamiliar.  Where you said "I hope that my english will be better when I'll read and write here something "  -- we might say ALMOST the same thing except:

"I hope that my english will be better when I'll read and write something here " -- just switching those two words around?  (I'm a teacher at heart so I could get all specific about the adverb following the noun -- but it's more how we think than "right" or "wrong")

We'd LOVE to see pictures of Charly when you can.  And perhaps we can all learn just a bit of German from you!!

    Re: Hello from Germany :)

Thank you for correcting my little mistake :)

we say in German "Ich hoffe, dass mein Englisch besser wird, wenn ich hier etwas

schreibe" and so I tought, it would be right, if I write it on this way ;)

    something=etwas

    here=hier

I have read some threads here and it's sometimes a bit difficult to understand what you all write... one reason is, that I don't know all vocabularies (or vocabs?), so I have to keep learning...

    Re: Hello from Germany :)

If I remember correctly, the verb comes at the end of the sentence in German.  Am I right?  It makes sense to me to translate something the way you would say it.  Feel free to ask anytime you are having trouble following something someone has written.  If you don't want to ask in the post, you can send me a private message and I'll try help.  I think you can copy and paste a post into a private message.  Or you can just let me know which post you are having trouble understanding.

This might help a little- sometimes we use abbreviations instead of typing out big words or phrases.  An example would be, when we read or see something funny, we type LOL instead of laughing out loud.  Some other common "short cuts" you might see are GSD for German Shepherd Dog, IMO for in my opinion, DH for dear husband.  Some of us also refer to our husbands as hubby.

    Re: Hello from Germany :)

And this is such a good way TO keep learning.  Such little things can change not just from English-speaking country to another English-speaking country -- but even within the US itself (which is so diverse anyway).

My husband is a Scot -- but he lived in England for quite a while.  We've been married for 12 1/2 years, known each other for 13 1/2 and STILL we discover vocabulary that is different between UK English and American English.

One of my favorite and true little stories -- years ago on another messageboard a woman posted "I'm having trouble in finding my little wire-haired terrior!!!"

hmmmm -- first, in **American** English her use of the pronoun "my" truly made me think the dog was HERS and "difficulty in finding" made me think the dog was lost!!!

Add that to her spelling of "terrior" -- it is a bit of American slang to sometimes refer to some of the terrier breeds as "terrors" or "terrorists" simply in jest because terriers, as a breed, can be so very stubborn and have such an "attitude".

    I thought she was JOKING.

So I made a good natured joking reference back that I hoped she found the little guy soon.

Oh my goodness.  (*fanning myself*) did I get FLAMED.  ohhhhhhhhhhh she was soooo angry with me!!!

First, I didn't realize she was Australian and they spell it "terrior" (with an "o") routinely.  Americans spell it with no "o".

She referred to it as "my" simply because it was her chosen breed.  Speaking of "my" as in something she wished to possess.  NOT that she already had it.  And "difficulty in finding" meant she was SHOPPING for one.  Trying to find a breeder -- and actually was looking for someone to refer her to an Australian breeder of wire-haired terriers.

I emailed her and it took several quite heated emails before she cooled off and realized I meant no harm but seriously wanted to understand her.  *I* learned much.  **She** learned much.  But it took some effort and I really gained far more understanding that sometimes you can glean much by simply reading and trying to understand exactly what someone meant or did *not* mean.

Ask questions.  It's a good thing.  (and did I mention we like pictures?? *smile*)

    Re: Hello from Germany :)

Welcome.  The school district I work for has a great German teacher who has been visiting with her students for 30 years now.  We often have a German exchange student, my greetings are about all I remember from German classes.

It is great to get a chance to connect with other people.  I hope to see you post often.

     Hi Susi!

We rarely get any Germans here on the board. I am German, too by the way, although i live all the way in China. Let me know, if you need any language help! Although, it seems as though you are doing just fine!

I hope, you'll post pictures of your dog! Wink

Red, and to look at new post look to the right of the screen and you will see a box that says "Shortcuts" click on "post you have not read" to read new posts.

    Re: Hello from Germany :)

Hi Susi!  Just now catching up!  It is always so wonderful to welcome young people to the forum.  As I have said before I wish I had this tool when I was your age..  I would have been a more responsible pet owner at a younger age.

I know very little German, my Grandparents spent a lot of time in Germany when they were younger....  Grandpa taught me the important things like how to count to 10,  A couple of other things that seem to fade from my memory right now.   Grandpa is now 92, Grannie is gone,(RIP) but I still remember gathering in the dining room of their home and watching the beautiful slides and pictures of their travels in Germany.

Oh did I mention......we want lots of pictures, lol!
