Re: Serving size for a small dog

Luke is currently around 9.5 lbs, not sure exactly. He's currently eating blue buffalo puppy food, 1 cup per day, which amounts to 456 kcals. This is based on his approximate adult weight of 15 lbs. Really, he usually gets a little less, because he never manages to work it all out of whatever toy I put it in.  The adult food is in the bottom of the container, and I believe he's actually starting to get some of that. The adult food is 586 kcal/cup, so I'll probably lower him a bit. His weight is good though, he's not the slightest bit over or underweight, though with larger dogs, I've kept them a bit skinnier. On a 50-60lb dog, 5lbs either way doesn't make much difference, but on a 10-15 lb dog, 5lbs can be 1/3-1/2 of the body weight, and even a lb is a significant amount of weight.

Max is 60 lbs. and he's not a high energy dog.  He gets 1-1/2 cups in the a.m. and if he finishes it he gets another  1/2 cup at night.  He eats less in the summer so when it's hot he eats less than 1-1/2 cups.  He seems healthy enough and he paces himself.  One time recently he went a couple of days without eating much of anything and then he pooped about six to eight paper towels that he'd snagged off the counter and eaten.  I had used them to heat tamales in the microwave and they had a bit of cheese on them. Embarrassed

My jacks, their 'spring/summer/fall servings are : Chloe 13-14 LBS: gets 5.1-5.2 OZ, Scout 20-21 LBS: gets 7.1-7.2 OZ. They are fed raw. For winter, they are fed less.

Gingerbread eats 1/2 cup of a 363 calorie per cup food-  Peanut eats about 1/3 cup of the same food. They both gained weight on a food that I forgot to check the calories- 568 per cup! So now I'm trying to get them to lose weight.
