  I can't get him to eat... Reply Contact  Kaiser is having a very bad day. I know he doesn't feel good, but i can't get him to eat. I went out and bought $20 worth of canned food, he wont touch it. He wouldn't even eat his pills with his peanut butter. I did get him to eat a few pieces of ham, but he will only eat them when i feed them to him by hand. Does anyone have any ideas on how i can get some food in him? Eat, drink, and be merry...for tomorrow we die..." - Dave Matthews Band Megan

Reply Contact If Kaiser can have it, try sprinkling some parmasean cheese over his food, or mix a little bit of canned cat food in.  If he can't have either of those, toss a little chopped garlic in his dish.  The "theme" here is stinky!  LOL   If all else fails, try zapping the canned food in the microwave for a little bit. All the Angels were busy so they sent me Caleb instead.

Reply Contact Stop trying so hard?  Seriously, if his not eating upsets you, he's going to know that and on some level is likely to be more reluctant to eat.  I'd just not worry until it's been more than a couple days. Reply Contact I agree that your energy (worry) about him not eating will affect.  Try to be cool about it.  Cottage cheese helps to stimulate the appetite.  I've also been known to add some ginger to the food to get Heidi to eat.  That seems to work for her for some reason....I guess she just likes the taste.  Brew some ginger tea; let it cool; and pour that and the wet herbs over it.  Its good for tummy upset. Vet just said he really needs to eat with all the meds. He hasn't eaten since yesterday morning but maybe it's the medicine making him sick. He's just doing really bad today and I'm very stressed. Reply Contact Did you check the cyclosporine?  Some dogs can't tolerate the un-modified version AT ALL.  And it can simply be the cyclosporine making the stomach sick -- it's a common side effect.  It's probably NOT Kaiser -- it's probably the cyclosporine.  The vet may need to try azathiaprine ... but check seriously that it's the right version of cyclo.  Both Val and Gratefuldawg have had it done WRONG be compounding pharmacies.  btw -- don't use dairy or cheese -- it will block the absorption of the cyclosporine.

As an owner of a "skinny" dog I also stress when Kord skips meals. I know Kaiser has got to be feeling the worse and not eating does not make it better, but he can do this and so can you.

Unfortuantely i am working all night, but my sister's babysitting him and keeping me updated. He is now taking 6 pills twice a day so i'm hoping that's the only reason he's feeling so bad--adjusting to all the new meds. Poor dude. It's okay Barbara, usually he loves cottage cheese and yogurt and i didn't realize he couldn't have either on these meds. He's now on cyclosporine,ketoconazole,flagyl,cephalexin, reglan, and metacam. Reply Contact The med's themselves are probably causing him to not want to eat; but at the same time, I know a few of those meds should not be given on an empty stomach either...at least not consistently. Is there anything they can prescribe for him for tummy issues? or appetite stimulant? If it were my dog, if he was taking meds I wouldn't be overly concerned; since your guy is taking meds, take a trip to the store and see if you can find some calf liver to help stimulate the appetite, but don't give a ton of it. K9 Cuisine ships $50 worth of food for free and it gets there really fast. Like, two days in my case. They sell three different flavors of Tripett tripe - the lamb seems the most attractive to my dogs. Also try a vitamin B complex dose. Give it about half an hour before mealtime. A couple of the "B's" stimulate appetite, one eases nausea, and one supports the liver. Don't try to sneak it in anything, just chuck it down the hatch. B is really nasty tasting.
