For those that trial/show and feed raw...

You do realize that 'freeze dried' raw food is the alternative than packing a full cooler of ice for the raw food right?

Yes, but then you have the bother of reconstituting it. Since the activities I typically go to involve very heavy exercise, generally in moderately high temps, ensuring their fluid intake is important to me, so I'd never feed it dry. And the freeze dried food is so expensive that it offsets what I save by camping on site. If I got a hotel room I can use the fridge in the room to keep food cold.

I pack cans of tripe, and kibble, and they get about half and half. I pour water over it and they eagerly lap up the tripe flavored water as well. Sometimes I go ahead and bring bones, too. If I freeze them solid they stay cold for a couple days.

I have the cooler for my food anyway, so it's no trouble to bring that. I don't eat out on the road. I bring sandwich and salad fixin's and fruit and whatnot - better for the diet and better for the pocket book.

Nice Becca! However, I don't camp out at the moment in time so I rather do the freeze dried stuff while on the road. that's of course, if my 'food lady' isn't around as she shows as well.

I usually just buy it at the grocery if I"m gone just a night or two...  but, have packed a cooler, it's a PITA, yes.  Freezedried is a good option, though. I may look into it when camping. It's honestly prohibitively expensive to do on a regular basis for me, though. I feed about 4-5lbs of meat a day!

I have done this before also. But typically sheepdog trials are too far in the middle of nowhere to make a run to the store conveniently.

I should also mention I drive a suburban and only travel with one or two dogs usually, so space isn't an issue. I put a bed in the Suburban, so what I save on food and hotel offsets what I spend on gas.

Emma pukes freeze dried, every time. She's such a freak. I can't even give her dried liver treats. *eyeroll*

Re: For those that trial/show and feed raw...

Just got done traveling the weekend throughout our wonderful mountains. Packing food for the dogs is far easier then trying to figure out what everyone else wants to eat....

Freeze dried is horribly expensive around here; not even something I can contemplate for the little guys as it's just so costly I don't even want to mess with it.

I've got my 2 little guys currently on Thrive from HK, with additional meat added in if I want to, otherwise, they did just fine on the Thrive that I pre-mixed with water at the house and loaded it in a tupperware bowl. My big guy did just fine on a couple frozen chicken backs and some canned food from Innova.

Been traveling with dogs all my life; to this day, it's still far easier to pack for them versus the kids.

Yeah I've done it that way before, but then its not what I make it to be, its prepackeged from the company. It isn't so bad for me to pack up the meat in a cooler.

I actually like doing freeze dried but I love giving beef gullet! So simple. Its a chore to package up the servings for the dogs but its worth it. Now, I won't bring tripe with me at far distances with me though!
