    So strange (health)

I know the 'net is no substitute for a doctor but I just find this so strange....lately (as in the past year or so, it kind of comes and goes, sometimes every day for a week, then not at all for two weeks) I get abdominal pain when I'm hungry.  I wouldn't call them "hunger pains" like I'm actually starving, lord knows I don't and will never have to know what THAT feels like, but often I get this ache right where the bone in the middle of your ribs stops.  It's so weird, I thought people usually get cramps, aches, or heartburn after you eat.  The only thing similar I can compare it too is once several years ago I took OTC naproxen for something and it must've been on an empty stomach.  It hurt so bad we stopped at Applebees to eat!  Then all better.

I know what you are talking about.  I have had it happen to me before and it just goes away.  I tried explaining it to dh and he couldn't grasp what I was saying!  It's like usually when you get hungry, your stomache will "growl" but in *my* case, I would be hungry and my stomache would get sharp pains right under my sternum.  It would be like that until I ate and then, all was better until I got hungry again.

You should probably have that looked at. Things like ulcers can actually feel like hunger pains and subside when you eat. Though the pain you are having seems higher than it should be for many ulcers, but I dont know.  I have a condition where my body cycles making too much stomach acid. The pain was similar to what you describe and when I went to the doctor about 10 years ago now he thought it could be an ulcer. He sent me to a gastro doc who said the same and did an endoscopy. Fortunately for me, there was no ulcer, but I am highly susceptible to them and I was diagonosed with this condition. My body cycles and I go through spurts throughout the year where I must be on meds to control the stomach acid and I get bad pains similar to what you are describing only lower.

Anyway.. It isn't something I would mess with. If you have been having this for awhile then it is time to see a doc!

    good luck!

Interesting I always thought ulcers felt worse if you ate or ate the wrong thing.  I'm waiting for it to come back so I can describe exactly where it is and what it feels like for the doc....

I too would recommend a doctor visit.  Ulcers should be treated so that it doesn't get worse...if thats what it is.  Several years ago I was having stomach pains and finally decided to have it looked at.  I was sent to a Gastro doctor who took a look inside with a camera and discovered a hiatl hernia which is a tear in the stomach lining.

How bad does an ulcer hurt?

Are you sure it isn't like a gas pain?  I get those if I get too hungry, but I tend to be a very gassy person.

I have no idea what it is.  It comes and goes and really varies as far as how much it hurts.  Sometimes it's just there, other times it's like I have to eat NOW and it almost hurts to breathe.

It depends on how big it is, where it is and your threshold for pain.  My poor mom has a colonic ulcer...and I'm here to tell you that she can be in excruciating pain when it flares up which is typically right before a BM (sorry if that is TMI)...not every time, thank goodness.

I know exactly what you mean because I get the same thing.  I always thought that it was the bile/acid in my stomach because it was so empty.

I have had this problem off and on for about 20 years, (lol ever since I met my adorable hubby)....

Actually, I started really paying attention to similarities.  I found that usually when I get this pain, I have been either stressed in some way and have not been sleeping well and have been consuming too much caffine, or not eating properly and on the go, again not sleeping well and drinking too much caffine.   It will usually last several days.  If I notice it right away, I lay off the caffine, eat healthier and try to get more rest and it will go away.   I have never gone to the Dr for it and it may be some type of an ulcer but now that I know what works that is what I do.   I have to say I have gone quite some time without an episode, but then it has been awhile since my hubby has injured himself or been in the hospital too, lol!
