Can dogs smell a mouse if it gets in the house?

My husband freaked me out this last night.  He was watching TV half snoring (but not asleep, he never admits to snoring or being asleep) in the dark bedroom while I watched my girly stuff in the den.  He jumps up and runs for the flashlight.  I hear all this noise with closets etc.  Come running and he says he saw a mouse in our bedroom run along the baseboard.  It is a two story house with a basement, lived in 17 years and never had a critter around.  I was like are you sure you saw it?  He said he is pretty sure.  Okay pretty sure and for sure are different when we are talking a mouse in the room I sleep in.  If I ever sleep in there again!  I don't mind a mouse outside. But I am the "no creeping about in my bedroom whether it be spiders, or any other living things).  Do they crawl on sleeping people?  How did it get upstairs with the carpeted stairways?  Why not in the kitchen with the food sources.  SIGH...........................Why didn't my dog smell it already if it really does exist?  My husband set traps in the closets away from the dogs reach.  Just in case he said.  He is pretty sure remember.   Might have seen a shadow but he doubts that.  I know you think, what a wimpy girl.  Okay I am.  Again outside a mouse is cool.  In my room with my undies and shoes to hide in- just plain freaking me out.  I would think the dog would notice something?  Any experience with this?

Dogs can definitely smell a mouse in the house. Some dogs care, and some don't. Would you like to borrow Emma? She's a mouse eliminator, extraordinaire!

They can definitely smell mice and Jessie would have been doing her best to find it. When our kids raised breeds of pigeons to compete in shows, she caught and ate the mice that hung around the lofts. I totally am with you about not wanting any sort of crittur creeping around the bedroom;Tongue Tied If there is a mouse, I hope you catch it soon.

Be REALLY REALLY sure the dogs can't get to the poison - rat/mouse poison is absolutely dangerous. (Not posted so much for your benefit, but for lurkers (: ) When we had a mouse problem I used these snap traps that locked the mouse in a plastic box that you baited with PB -- so you wouldn't have to see dead mousies I guess. I don't know if they worked or not, I told BF I wanted NOTHING to do with the mouse disposal LOL.

And yes, Pirate can smell anything small and furry within a 100 ft. radius :)

And that is the scary part. I always worry that she'll swallow one that a neighbor has poisoned. I've pretty much banned her from mouse patrol, and since the rabbits are no longer here, there's no food for them left outside.

Ha ha ha!!!  We have had mice before.  They don't bother me at all but Dh doesn't really care for them!  Keep in mind that I have 4, count 'em 4 cats and the last mouse that was caught in the house was not by one of them or a trap, Brownie caught it!!!  She knew it was there and she waited until the right time to strike!!  My MIL had Min Pins and her dogs actually alerted her to the mice in her kitchen.  She had no clue that they were there until her dogs took off towards the cabinets and started barking like crazy!!  She set some traps and caught her mouse within the hour!!

Twister is jumping up and tugging my arm begging to be sent to your house to help with the mouse problem, if it exists. lol  We have never had a mouse inside but we have a pasture behind the house and he loves going on "rat patrol" outside in the yard. :)  I love mice but not indoors.  I also was told by someone who should know, that dogs and cats won't get poisoned if they eat an animal that has died of the poison.  I personally wouldn't want to risk it anyway.

Oh yes Rocky says "Let me at em!"   He is a mouser for sure.  We had them the worst we have ever had this year.    We dont use poison since we got Rocky cause he is such a mouser.   He doesnt eat them he just brings them to me after he has played them to death.  Yuck......  We tried many different traps, snap traps, sticky traps, the little round traps that suposed to shut when a mouse enters.  Best thing we ever did was buy a devise at Lowes that plugs in, sends out a high freq noise that keep mice away.   I was very skeptical but we caught around 20 mice in traps the first two or three nights we got this thing and havent seen one since.   If there were any in the house now I can assure you Rocky would sniff them out, so far after 6 months no sign of mouse.  What a relief!   We live in the country so mice are expected in the fall and spring but so far I am a believer.   Now this high freq is not harmful to dogs, cats or humans but if you have any type of rodent pet you can not use one.

Poor Rocky now he has to stick to the moles and gophers outside! LOL!

Well, not my dogs apparently. We had a mouse, well we think it was actually a shrew in the birdroom a couple of weeks ago. We sent the dogs in looking for the thing, and nothing. It actually ran out right in front of them and they didn't even notice.

We got the shrew out by just doing a full cleanup and scrubbing every little corner. A friend said to eliminate any food source and it will go elsewhere.

Bugsy can smell all sorts of stuff which is why when he starts pawing at a drawer or pointing at a wall I get very concerned LOL

Last week first thing in the morning we were going down the stairs (he is a big wiggle butt in the morning so he was all excited and wiggling and wagging and he has 2 rubber bones he carries) and suddenly his motion stopped - completely - and with his rubber bones still in his mouth his head whipped to the side and he did this big sniff.  then he went all wiggly again.

I'm like uh oh something's in the corner but it isn't alive - so put lights on and it was a dead bumblebee.  He picked up its scent while we were coming down the stairs.

If it were alive he would have dropped the bones and his tail would have been going like a switch and he would have been after it - been there done that with palmetto bugs (huge roach like things), lizards, spiders, ants, etc.

For a supposed terrier Roxy would only know a mouse was there if it poledanced on her nose. Her sight and smell senses are so awful I wonder if she is actually a dog sometimes.

So - does this device actually capture the mice? We could really use something like that.

Both of my dogs can sniff out a mouse anywhere. Sassy just wants to show you but Buffy will eat even a large one in a huge gulp. It's pretty disgusting to witness. The real problem is that they're both obsessive and even after the mouse is gone, they're still convinced it's there.

2 of my cats are on a mouse so quick no dog stands a chance although Molly once ate a mouse that was left dead on the floor. She "coughed" up the carcass that night. Quite lovely it wasn'tHuh?

I once had a blind foster cat who was mousehunting in my basement along with 2 of my cats - that was pretty cool.

I've never had a dog show much interest in a mouse in the house.

This devise does not capture anything, it's high pitch freq. keeps them from coming in.   I just have one unit, our Kitch, entry, dining area is pretty open and our house is small.   The instructions say that if you have a large home  or multi levels you should use more than one.  I opted to put ours in the kitchen area and it seems to have eliminated all the mice in the house.   Like I mentioned the first few nights it was on we kept the traps loaded and caught a bunch of mice, this was due to the high frequency sending them out to the open too find a way out of the house.   Not a problem since then and believe me it was the worst we have ever had.
