Re: New puppy, allergies and grain free foods

Proplan selects is NOT a good food by any definition. Not the worst, but it's one of those bags of rice spiked with corn gluten to pretend it has protein in it, and a bit of meat, turkey in this case, to pretend it has meat in it. I'd suggest the OP change foods just on the basis of the ingredients and the huge amounts of poop. Just try one of the foods suggested for a couple of months and see if the pup improves.

    Proplan select puppy Ingredients:
Turkey, brewers rice, corn gluten meal, chicken meal (natural source of glucosamine), pearled barley, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), oat meal, dried egg product, pea fiber, dried beet pulp, fish oil, animal digest, potassium chloride, calcium phosphate, calcium carbonate, salt, dried tomatoes, blueberry pomace, dried sweet potatoes

I had missed the part about the amount of stool. For an adult dog, pooping more than 3 times a day can be a symptom of a food allergy, so a switch may be a good idea. Also, this pup could have a sensitive stomach, so switching to a food with fewer ingredients may help.

Just wanted to thank everyone for their suggestions.  After much deliberation.... I have decided to go w/ California Natural.

Thank you all for your suggestions / tips.  We'll see how the change goes and how much he likes it.

That's a good idea; it's unlikely to cause problems if she has food allergies. Please keep us posted; I hope the change helps.

Make sure you add some sort of fatty oil (like salmon/fish oil).  Cal. Nat. has a very low fat % for a puppy--even the puppy version.  I would still take your pup to the vet to make sure nothing else is going on....I still highly doubt it has anything to do with allergies of any kind.

Re: New puppy, allergies and grain free foods

I do have an appointment for the vet in a week and half for his final shots, so I am going to reference the issue w/ him as well.  The vet has seen him twice so far for shots and a general check up and he felt everything was ok.  I didn't specifically bring up the allergy issue because I just realized what it *may* be once I put the symptoms together.  I feel that there is a strong possibility it is the just the cold winter and acclimating to a new area.  Regardless, changing to a better food will be good for him either way... I hope he likes it.  I am going to begin adding some in this weekend and should have fully changed w/in a week.

    Thanks again!!
