Goose Creek Barbeque (Crock Pot Recipe - not goose)

I had some odds and ends of fruit, rice, and threw them in the pot with some pork rib to see what happened.  The dogs were very into the sweet taste and rich pork flavor.  This probably isn't suitable for a dog with sugar or fat restrictions.

As always, this recipe is for supplemental feeding only.

    • 1 pound pork rib, any style.  I used the less meaty kind off the flank.  You'll be removing the bone so whichever is cheaper - bone or boneless will work here.
    •  2 cups uncooked rice
    • 1 large sweet potato, diced very small (about 10 oz)
    • 3 peaches, pitted and diced
    • 1 zucchini or about a cup of diced okra for that gen-oo-INE South Carolina taste.  Mince the okra very small.
    • 1 yellow squash
    • 1 banana or sweet (black) plantain, peeled and mashed
    • 1/2 cup blueberries or blackberries, whichever you have in season, mashed
    • 2-3 cups water

Put everything but the bananas and the berries in a crockpot and set on low.  High won't work for this - it will carmelize the sugar too fast and you'll end up with a blackened mess.  Go ahead, ask me how I know this.

Cook for 12 hours on low, or until the meat is falling off the bone if there is any, or until you can mash up the meat with a fork.  The rice and sweet potatoes should also be very soft.  Check the water level periodically, especially at the beginning.  The first time you do this you probably don't want to walk away from it.

Add the banana and the blueberries, and mash everything together.  Cool and portion into daily servings, and freeze if you won't be feeding it all at once.

Ooo, I might adjust the proportions a little (Pirate gets 50% meat, 40% veggies, and 10% carb - he's a little chunky right now!) and give this a whirl. I haven't tried fruit yet, but my fruit place has peaches for .99/lb!

I made this for my dogs today, and it went over very well. Salem and Cheza thought it was the best stuff ever!! I pulled out some portions for them in little bowels to cool and they would not leave me alone until I gave it to them. They somehow knew it was dog food and not people food.

I did make one change though. My package of pork was a bit over weight, and I had some apples around that we weren't going to be able to eat all of, so I diced 2 apples and threw them in.

My pork ribs were boneless and the recipe took about 10 hours before the pork shredded.

We have so many apples lying around all the time that I usually throw them in, well, everything.  But I figured I'd leave them out for once.  I'm glad your dogs liked it!  I was really tempted to try some myself but I was a bit weirded out by the zuke.

Tomorrow we will barbecue a pork picnic, but it will be for the humans!  The dogs still have some of this left over.

We are doing pork bbq as well tomorrow. Smoked pork shoulder to be exact. The dogs will have this recipe instead.

Thanks so much for posting all of these great recipes. With only 2 dogs this will last me a long time, and it was very little work.

Yum yum! My dogs *love* pork, and have a big sweet tooth, so this is something they'd enjoy (minus the rice, probably.... I don't even have any rice, here, LOL). I've been thinking of crockpotting them some rice, for a bit. I have apples, peaches, blueberries, zucchini, bananas, sweet potatoes, and squash ALL in the cabinet or fridge, already. I just need to go get them some of that good sale pork at Winn Dixie (99 cents a lb for a shoulder roast yum!).
