Anyone have experience with luxating patella?

Hi everyone! My sweet Callie has just been diagnosed with luxating patella in BOTH of her knees. She is only a year old..my pretty Cattle Dog/BC or whatever the heck she is. A few weeks ago she was running around the yard, and then started to limp. I thought she injured herself, but she was fine a few minutes later, walking normally. The next day it happened again...she would be walking normally and all of a sudden her knee would buckle and she put the leg up and hopped on the other 3 legs. Took her to the vet and she said it was probably a partially torn ligament because she wasn't crying out in pain or anything, but her breathing became heavier when the knee was manipulated. She sent us home with Rimadyl and Consquin and instructions for Callie to stay off her legs as much as possible for the next month..not a hard thing to do because Callie has been lazy since birth and has never been a highly active pup. 3 weeks later, no improvement at all. I have to carry her outside to potty, she had trouble getting in and out of her crate, and she couldn't handle the slippery kitchen floor at all. Then she started completely collapsing on the ground. A few minutes later she would be up and walking again with one leg off the ground.THEN...I realized it was the opposite leg that she was holding up..she was hopping on the other 3 legs...even the originally injured one! Did a google search and found info on luxating patella and I KNEW that's what was going on. Back to the vet today to confirm my suspicion..saw a different doctor...he was able to pop both of her knee caps in and out and agreed that she definately has luxating patella of both knees. Now we have a consult with a surgeon on Monday and xrays. I feel terrible for my baby, but we have to fix this. She's only a year old and she can't walk! Her knees do pop back into place on their own, and she doesn't seem to be in any pain...but she is definately lame.I was wondering if anyone here has a dog that has had the surgery done on one or both legs...and just your experiences with it..and how expensive it was and how the recovery was and how your dog is doing now. Any advice/info would sure be appreciated. I'm scared.

Thanks..and I hope you all are well!

    Janet

A number of years ago I had a small terrier who had a luxating patella repaired.  One of my sisters has a toy poodle - one knee done and one to go.  Callie may not show pain, but believe me, it does hurt when the knee pops in and out.

I can't comment on the current prices, but my sister's dog is healing very nicely.  There have been great advances in the surgical technique used.  The animal has to be keep inactive while the leg heals, but that has not been a problem for my dog or my sister's.

Luxating patellas are a frequent genetic problem and the surgery to correct them is fairly routine.  The groove is either too shallow or the ligament stretches too much (needs to be shortened).

Callie is young enough that she should heal very quickly.  Just be sure that the vet uses a heart monitor during surgery and that isoflurane gas is used as the anesthetic.  You can expect a full recovery, but don't let her become overweight.  She will probably have some arthritis in the knees when she gets old.

This post has some links which show pictures of the knee structure: http://community.dog.com/forums/p/65379/513067.aspx#513067

    Several things here:

    • What you are calling "lazy" may have been pain problems that Callie was too stoic to show.
    • You may find that Callie becomes much more active after her knees are fixed.
    • I consider Rimadyl a drug of last resort.  There are safer anti-inflammatories.
    • If Callie is not spayed, please do so.  You don't want to breed pups with bad knees.

Re: Anyone have experience with luxating patella?

Thanks for replying  Janet. Much appreciated. Callie was spayed when she was 10 weeks old...we adopted her from a shelter and she was already spayed. I didn't actually give her any more Rimadyl after the 3rd day she was on it.It made her sick. What you said about maybe she was in pain and not lazy..I absolutely agree...now that I know that something is really wrong with her, that is a very real possibility. She is a very happy and sweet pup...really perfectly behaved and perfect in temperment....and I am really really hoping that once this is corrected that she will be running and playing more than ever. I hate seeing her like this....only a year old and acting like a senior. Breaks my heart.

    Thanks again

Re: Anyone have experience with luxating patella?

YES, MY GOLDEN RETRIEVER KAYCEE HAD BOTH KNEES DONE.  SHE STARTED LIMPING A COU0PLE OF DAYS BEFORE CHRISTMA IN 2000 AND I WAS IN A PANIC.  I HAD LOST MY 12 1/2 YEAR OLD IRISH SETTER TO BONE CANCER IN JULY "97 AND HE STARTED WITH A LIMP.ON REAR LEG.

GOT KAYCEE TO THE VET AND LUXATING PATELLA WAS DAGNOSIS.  SHE  HAD HER RIGHT KNEE DONE jAN. 3, 2001.  sHE WAS 16 MONTHS OLD.  THEN 14 MONTHS LATER HER OTHER KNEE TOTALLY WENT AND THIS TIME SHE ALSO HAD TO HAVE ACL REPAIR.  RECOVERY WAS LONGER.  THE FIRST TIME I HAD TO KEEP HER INACTIVE FOR 4 WEEKS, THE OTHER KNEE REQUIRED 6 WEEKS AND SHE HAD TO WEAR A SPLINT THE FIRST 5 DAYS.

BECAUSE SHE WAS TOTALLY INACTIVE FOR SO LONG, I WOULD MASSAGE HER BACK AN HER LEGS EVERY DAY--AND SHE LOVED IT.  ALSO, SE HAD VERY SENSITIVE SKIN AND HAD HORRIBLE RAZOR BURN AND ALSO WHEN SPLINT WAS REMOVED, TAPE BURN WAS WORSE THAN RAZOR BURN.  I SMEARED HER SKIN SEVERAL TIMES A DAY WITH ALOE VERA GEL.  IT NOT ONLY SOOTHED THE BURN, BUT ALSO HELPED WITH HEALING.

ALSO THE FIRST FEW DAYS  I HAD TO USE A SLING TO HELP HER WHEN SHE WENT OUT TO DO BUSINESS.  I USED AN OLD TABLE CLOTH.  I WILL POST A PICTURE AND YOU WILL SEE HER LAYNG ON IT..

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOUR  CALLIE DOES NOT BECOME TO ACTIVE TO SOON.  ACCODING TO ME VET, THE LARGER DOGS ARE FAR MORE APT TO FOUL UP THE SURGERY THAN TOY BREEDS BCAUSE OF THEIR WEIGHT, AN THEY USUALLY SEEM TO TRY TO GET ACTIVE SOONER.

ALSO, IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA TO START CALLIE ON JOINT SUPS RIGHT NOW, GLUCOSAMINE, MSM, CHONDROTIN.  I STATED KAYCEE ON THEM AFTE HER FIRST SURGERY.  SHE DIED MAY 25 AT AGE 8 YEAS, 9 MONTHS, 1 WEEK---CANCER, THE TERROR OR GOLDEN RETRIEVERS.  bUT SHE WAS RUNNING AND SPINNING AND JUMPING TIL THE END, HER KNEES NVER BOTHEREDHER AGAIN.  aT 2 1/2 BEFORE LAST SURGERY SHE HAD TO BE HLPED UP ONTO THE BED AND SOFA.  WHAT A DIFFERENCE THE SURGERIES MADE.

    GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR CALLIE.

Re: Anyone have experience with luxating patella?

ACTAULLY i AM A LITTLE SAD.  iT WAS 4 WEEKS AGO TONIGHT THAT SHE SPENT HER LAST NIGHT STRETCHED OUT BESIDE ME ON THE BED, ME RUBBING HER TUMMY.  SHE HAD SLEPT IN THE BED SINCE SHE WAS 4 MONTHS OLD AND CAME OUT OF THE PLAYPEN BESIDE THE BED.  MY HUBBY IS A LONG HAUL TRUCKER DRIVER (HE WAS IN QUEBEC WHEN SHE SIED--HAD LEFT OUT THE DAY BEFORE HER DIAGNOSIS & SURGERY.  aNWYA, WHEN HE WAS HOME, SHE SLEPT BETWEEN US AND SHE WOULD NOT GET OUT OF THE BED IN THE MORNING TIL i GOT UP.  hE WOULD CALL HER AND SHE WOULD JUST SNUGGLE CLOSER TO ME.

i CAN'T BELIEVE THAT i FOUND A PEA SIZE CYST IN THAT AMSS OF FUR ON HER BACK THIGH, BUT COULD NOT FEEL A DOUBLE FIST SIZE TUMOR IN HER ABDOMEN AS SHE LAID ON HER BACK BESIDE ME NIGHT AFTER NIGHT.

ANYWAYM I AM GLAD YOU STARTED CALLIE ON SUPS. EARLIER.  WE FEEL IT HELD KAYCEE'S ARTHRITIS AT BAY ALL THESE YEARS.  ANYTIME THERE IS JOINT SURGERY, ARTHRITIS USUALLY SETS IN FASTER THAN FOR JOINTS THAT HAS NOT HAD DAMAGE OR SURGERY.

ONE OTHER THING--I AGREE WITH JANET AOUY AVOIDING RIMADYL IF AT ALL POSSIBLE.  MY VET WILL NOT EVEN PRESCRIBE IT--SAID HE HAS SEEN TO MANY ADVERSE REACTIONS.  A FEW YEARS AGO I HAD MY DRUGGIST LOOK IT UP AND HIS COMMENT WAS "THAT IS SOME NASTY STUFF."  IT SEEMS AT ONE TIME IT WAS GIVEN TO HUMANS, BUT THEY SEEM TO HVAE LIVER DAMAGE/DEATHS, SO IT GOT A NAME CHANGE AND WAS GIVEN TO ANIMALS.

Callie has been on a joint supplement for a few weeks now.

Another good supplement is plain Knox NutraJoint (grocery store - Jello isle).

Re: Anyone have experience with luxating patella?

When our old golden devlped artriti in hs hips and spine--his spine "humped" up and went crooked, he cold not stretch his rear legs behind him at all, was slow getting up and donw--but once up, he ALWAYS went at a trot.  I started him on the Knox and in about 2 1/2 months i saw him stretchhis rear legs a little.  WAAAA HOOOO.

Hubby, cross country rucker, got in  and I didntthink to tell him that Buck at ee able to stretchhis lgs sme.  Heard hubby yelling at me that Buck had stretched hs back legs some.  Well, hubby, who is not one for watnng to take pill wa so impressed tat he started taking the pill orm for his back.  we saw a good improvemet in Buck's movement right up until his death at 12 yers and 3 months.

Re: Anyone have experience with luxating patella?

Thanks for the replies. I really appreciate it.

Went for a consult with an orthopedic surgeon...he said she has a grade 2-3 in the left leg and a grade 2 in the right. He said the surgery will cost $2,700 per leg.  I was expecting it to be pretty high since the initial consult cost me almost $200 and he barely looked at her. I am going to contact the shelter we adopted her from to see if they would do the surgery for less money at their facility. They have their own clinic and state of the art surgical department, and Callie's trainer told me that she has heard of them doing procedures for dogs adopted from their shelter at a significant price reduction, especially if the pup has a congenital disorder. Fingers crossed. I would 2nd mortgage the house for her if I had to..but I am hoping it wont come to that. To make matters worse...my other dog decided to try to scale the fence in the yard....he didn't succeed, but he managed to rip off one of his nails...$300 to get that treated. After they removed the bandage and he was healing quite nicely, he managed to injure it again. I have no idea how he did that as the fence is now 7 feet tall and there is nothing in the yard that I can see that he could have gotten it caught on. Unbelievable. In the past 3 weeks I have spent a total of $1,200 at the vet. Hopefully once Callie's surgery is over things will settle down a bit. lol

Re: Anyone have experience with luxating patella?

i KNOW MANY GO WITH ORTHOPEDIC VETS FOR THESE SURGERIES, BUT MY VET DID BOTH OF KAYCEE'S KNEES.  HAD I NOT TRUSTED HIM COMPLETELY I WOULD HAVE NOT ALLOWED HIM TO DO KAYCEE'S KNEES.  HE IS YOUNG, ONLY 45, AND VERY UP TO DATE ON EVERYTHING-- (ONLY IN LATE 30'S WHEN HE DID HER KNEES).  IF HE HAS ANY DOUBTS HE WILL SNED YOU TO SPECIALIST FOR WHATEVER PROBLEM.  HE HAS DONE A LOT OF KNEES ON ALL SIZE DOGS, PREFERS SMALLER ONES AS THE OWNERS TEND TO KEEP THEM INACTIVE LOGNER--LABS, GOLDENS, ETC TEND TO TRY TO GET ACTIVE TOSOON.

ANYY, BNACK THEN HE CHARGED $500 FOR FIRST KNEE AND LITTLE MORE FOR 2ED KNEE AS IT TOOK MORE PROCUDURES.  rECENTLY WE WERE TALKING ABOUT IT AND HE SAID HE NOW HASTO CHRAGE $750--OUR TAXES AND INSURANCE ARE SKY HERE ON THE TEXAS COAST AND GETTING HIGHER EVERY YEAR.

aA COUPLE O YEARS AGO A SUV ROLLED WITH TWO ROTTIE PUPPIES IN IT--THEY WERE ACTUALLY ON THIER WAY TO SEE HIM.  ONE HAD A LEG BROKEN INTO "JIGSAW PUZZLE".  HE FLAT OUT TOLD THE OWNERS HE COULDN'T FIX THE LEG, THEIR ONLY HOPE WAS A SPECIALIST IN HOUSTON.  AMPUTATION WAS ALL HE COULD DO.  THEY HEMMED AND HAWED AROUND FOR A FEW DAYS.  DIDN'T WANT THE PUP TO LOE IT'S LEG, BUT DIDNT' WANT ANYONE BUT HIM TREATING IT.

I WAS IN THERE AND HAD HEARD THE PUPPY SCREAMING AND ASKED WANDA, THE RECEPTIONIST ABOUT THE POOR DOG AND SHE TOLD ME TH STORY ABOUT THE ROLL OVER, ETC.  SAID ANY TIME THE PUPPY WAS AWAKE IT SCREAMED LIKE THAT.  HWEN  I COULDN'T BELIEVE THE OWNES LET IT BE THAT WAY A COUPLE OF DAYS. I WS BACK IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS LATER AND ASKED ABOUT THE PUPPY.  THE OWNERS  FINALLY TOLD MY VET TO AMPUTATE...AFTER 2 DAYS OF LETTING IT SUFFER LIKE THAT.    I LATER LEARNED THAT PUP DID GREAT AND IN JUST A FEW WEEKS ACTING LIKE IT NEVER KNEW IT HAD EVERHAD A 4THLEG.

KAYcEE'S LAT KNEE SURGERY WAS OVER 6 YEARS BEFORE SHEDIED AND HER KNEES WERE PERFECT.  i HOP YOU CAN GET THESURGERY DONE CHEAPERS, ESPECIALLY WITH BOTH KNEES NEEDING TO BE DONE.

Re: Anyone have experience with luxating patella?

Well, after spending close to $1,000 just on surgical consultations, I finally found a really great surgeon for Callie!  She is getting both knees done tomorrow.I know recovery will be brutal at first...since both legs will be done I am going to have to carry her out to pee and use a sling to hold her up to "go". This hospital she is going to is awesome... very well staffed. They have 28 doctors there, and during Callie's surgery there will be a cardiologist and a board certified anesthesiologist there monitoring her at all times. She will be there for 3 days recovering. The estimate I was given..approx. $3800 for both legs. Not too bad considering all the other consults I went on I was given an estimate of $2800 per leg, and none of the other places had board certified anesthesiologists or cardilogists there to monitor her. I'm really praying my girl gets through this easily and heals fast.Scary when they have to get surgery.

Re: Anyone have experience with luxating patella?

I am glad you found a good place and are having it done.  it will make life so much better for her.  i knw many times they will do both knees on smaller dogs. and that is great to get it done once and for all and only have to put them under the one time and put them thru th pain one time.

give us up dates.  prayers and good thoughts fo yu little girl.

Re: Anyone have experience with luxating patella?

Goodness, I typed out a long reply, but then my browser froze up and I lost it. Sorry if this seems a little clipped.

Keira had ACL surgery done on one leg last year. I know it's not the same kind of surgery, but I imagine that recovery is similar. She's doing GREAT now- you can't tell she ever had a leg problem.

Advice: Establish a potty routine from the moment Callie comes home. I found it harder to tell when Keira needed to go- especially at the very beginning. It's best to just have a routine so that you don't have any accidents (we learned this the hard way). And if your dog is anything like mine, just because she doesn't go when you take her out doesn't meant that she doesn't need to. It took a long time for her to go (she couldn't get in a comfortable position). Be patient.

Watch your dog carefully to make sure she doesn't try to do too much too fast. Some dogs are better about it than others, but in any case, it'll take some effort on your part.

Recovery is slow at first, but it gets better. You'll probably have to do some therapy with your girl once the casts come off to rebuild the leg muscles that shrink due to the inactivity of being immobile. Swimming is great- especially at the beginning. It exercises, but doesn't stress the joints. Walks are better for later on.

It probably will be pretty discouraging at first. I never knew a dog could look so pathetic. She got depressed to- especially at first when she wasn't allowed out of her crate except for potty needs. But really, it gets better. It's soooo worth it when they get back to being themselves. :)

I don't know how recovery for this kind of surgery is, but ACL recovery took more or less 3 months.

Poor baby- I send Callie my best wishes!

Re: Anyone have experience with luxating patella?

Thanks so much for the advice. I am going to pick her up later today. They called me this morning and said she is doing well..still very loopy and on major pain meds, and she hasn't tried to squat to pee yet. They are going to go over with me how to take her out with a sling on her belly.

The good news.. the grooves in her knees did not need to be cut...they were perfectly normal...and the vet said the repair was a very simple one and she is pretty confident that Callie will have full unrestricted use of her legs. The cost actually came out to a bit less than the original estimate...I paid $3,550 total for both legs.

Anyone have any advice on how to keep her comfortable? Any massaging tips?
