Heat cycle and weight loss (on my show dog)

Keela came into heat in Feb. and she lost half a pound - it seemed almost instantaneous. It has been hell getting the weight back on her. I know half a pound doesn't seem like much, but when she weighs 7.5 lbs to begin with - it makes a huge difference on a small dog. She's holding steady at about 7.2 lbs - her hip bones aren't showing anymore, and you can't see her ribs (never could) - she just still looks a little too lean.

Back track to last years heat in January (at 14 months old) - she lost a little weight, but gained it back easily. The summer heat in July - I didn't notice any weight loss. I didn't have her for her first heat, she was still with her breeder.

So, winter heats seem to be a problem with her. Now granted, she is my first intact dog, not to mention a chow hound that would eat until she pops so I have to keep her on a strict portion control. The only thing is - a little too much kibble and she gains weight (outside of this heat cycle problem anyway). I've never had this problem with Jezzy - she holds at 6.5 lbs without any problem. Jezzy had a heat cycle and was over a year old when she was fixed (due to health issues we waited).

Throw in two other observations: any hair or whiskers trimmed for shows are not growing back at her normal rate. It was a month between shows and I had very little to trim - not usual. Plus, the whiskers are growing at uneven rates instead of her normal even growth of before. Secondly, they weren't big changes, and if you didn't live with her, you wouldn't have noticed it - but there have been small behavior changes. She was kennel raised with other dogs, so food and toy guarding were things we had worked on and gotten past - they returned out of the blue when she came into heat. I know they can be moody - but....you throw in the other personality change of total 'overly calm' dog in situations that she is usually bouncing off the wall Min Pin behavior - and I am concerned.

None of it is big in and of itself - but you throw all 3 problems in the mix, and I am concerned. I'm having a thyroid panel through MSU done next week (the earliest we could do it after her heat cycle).

Am I worrying too much? Is weight loss and heat cycles typical for some females? Her breeder doesn't think anything of it, nor do other Min Pin people. I'm not bashing them, but Keela lives in the house with me vs living in the kennels and coming in occasionally like some of these people do with their dogs. I'm not saying they wouldn't have it checked if they had her - I just don't want to make to much of this if it isn't something out of the norm. Experienced breeders - input please?

    Thanks,

IMO it's probably nothing. Many bitches lose weight, condition and get testy up to during and for a bit after seasons. As to the whiskers? They are likely the most a MinPin could show of the often MAJOR coat losses bitches can have after a season. My Beagle girls BLOW big time a month or two later...and whiskers could very easily be a part of that. She might even be going thru a false pregnancy which for sure would account for guardy off behavior.

The panel needs to be done anyways if she's ebing kept intact for breeding possibly...and her breeder doubtless would like the results even if she isn't bred. Good call on that but...I wouldn't count anything really that wouldn't be a by product of going thru a season. Some girls NEVER return to being "nice with all and everyone" after they cycle...for some it's a permanent personality change.

Hi Amy, I'm not a breeder, just a pet owner (in your neck of the woods it looks like).  But, I can say that hormonal changes can be tough on the girls.  Look at our cycles and those of other women you know, it can be he$$ on the body and the emotions.  The heats do take a toll.

I don't blame you for being worried, but yeah...probably no need to over worry.  Have you tried adjusting her diet to put on a little more weight?  Maybe you could allow her to be a bit more of a chow hound until she puts the weight you desire back on...then get her back on portion control.

My Heidi has only had 2 heat cycles; both had different affects on her body and emotions.  I'm getting her spayed in July at 18 months.

Good luck and try not to fret so much, neighbor.  Smile

Re: Heat cycle and weight loss (on my show dog)

Thanks Gina. I guess I was just not expecting that big of a change in her behavior going on her past two heats. She has matured and changed so much from the dog we brought home that the changes I saw in her from Feb. - April had me slightly concerned. First intact dog as I said - the evolution of her as she grows can leave me scratching my head sometime. And she does blow coat - for a short hair, small dog - she was shedding!!! LOL

The biggest thing that had me worried is that I had to hold her in my arms for several hours one day and she just laid there - didn't struggle, didn't fight and squirm to get down and go be snoopy - definitely not her typical demeanor. That with her weight loss and the return of her guarding - call me overly protective!

Yeah, I am going ahead and doing the OFA thyroid panel - cost wasn't that much different, and I will want the health clearances if I ever decide to breed her. That decision will depend on a LOT of things and isn't something I'll be taking lightly with her.

    Thanks again!

Re: Heat cycle and weight loss (on my show dog)

Hey neighbor! Oh Keela has loved the food increase. She's gotten triple of her usual food allotment and she didn't gain an ounce for several weeks. As long as she was holding at 7 lbs and not dropping I wasn't too concerned - she's in heat right? But when it went on and she wasn't gaining and the other 'things' started showing up, that is when I started wondering if it was more than just the heat cycle.

Hopefully I'm just being overly protective and it is just her evolving and growing - which means I get to grow too! LOL Thanks for all the help!!!!

I have two girls that always blow coats and loose weight after heat cycles. One girls looks so skiny after her cycles, and after about a month  or so, her weight is back on. My other girls we never see weight loss,  but with these two, it happens every time! Sounds very normal to me!

Re: Heat cycle and weight loss (on my show dog)

My Shepherd sometimes cycled every 4 months, and in addition to being a naturally hard keeper, she always lost weight after a heat cycle! It drove me absolutely crazy - I was constantly trying to get weight on this dog, lol. If you're worried, go ahead with the thyroid panels ... it's a good idea to have a full thyroid panel done as a precaution before breeidng anyway. But some bitches are just taxed physically by their cycles, while others are not phased a bit by it. Hormones play the largest role, but don't underestimate diet, either. On certain foods, my Shepherd would come out of her cycle in much better condition, tho the problem was still there ...

Re: Heat cycle and weight loss (on my show dog)

If she's not showing ribs, well aren't minpins supposed to be shown in a lean and trim condition anyway? Have other minpin people said she is too thin?

As for the whiskers, she just may not be in a growth phase. I think whiskers are actually specialized hairs. With intact bitches, hair growth is directly linked to their season. About four months after a heat, there will be the shedding phase. Followed by the active coat growing period, and then the maintaining phase. If the whiskers were trimmed during a time when new coat is not being grown, I would not be surprised if the whiskers would not grow back as quickly.

I really don't have any experience with this, Samoyeds are not supposed to have their whiskers trimmed. Just throwing out a theory that made sense to me. So I guess this is my disclaimer, I totally made this up. Wink
