    Nutro Problems?

Well, as if people didn't have enough to worry about, someone posted this link on craigslist today: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2008/04/pet_food_recalls93.html

I don't feed Nutro, but I know that some people here do, and a lot of the shelters use it.  So, caveat emptor.

    Re: Nutro Problems?

    Buyer beware, indeed.

I've not had a problem with the food, though one comment did strike me as interesting. That the dog would only eat his/her food when the human was present because it was expected of them, not because they wanted it.

What bothers me is that I can no longer find locally the formula I normally feed him which is for large breed adults. The employees at the stores know nothing about why it's not available. An email answered said they have had some problems getting some ingredients from some suppliers.

But that doesn't make sense to me. The primary difference between regular and large breed formulas is the balance of calcium to phosphorous. The large breed uses less calcium. So, even if there was a shortage of powdered calcium, that should actually work in favor of the large breed formula production.

What I am afraid of is that it's not being made anymore as a business decision. Nutro was bought out by Mars which owns a few other food companies, as well. Some corporate overeducated idiot might have decided that the one formula wasn's selling enough units and the bottom line is more important than our pets. A yahoo who doesn't realize that I feed what I feed, not because it's the greatest food in the world or the most prestigious or any other reason of vanity, but because it's the food he does well on. If it had been Science Diet or Innova, same thing. I learned the hard way that feeding him what he needs has nothing to do with what I think, as a human, is a good food or not.

Ron, I have fed the Lamb & Rice Large Breed Puppy ( more protein the the adult formula) to Jessie and she did great on it but I can't get it anymore either. An employee at PetsMart said he thinks they're having problems finding a reliable supplier for rice gluten, which is in both the L&R large breed puppy and the L&R large breed adult formulas.

I've heard that too about the rice shortage thing. But since they are still producing the regular formula Lamb Meal and Rice, I wonder why they can't do the Large Breed version, which is specific about the calcium and, I think, also slightly different on the glucosamine. Also, I haven't been able to find 40 lb bags, which is how I usually buy it. Only the 20 pound bags.

That's interesting.  Rice gluten doesn't add rice content, it increases protein levels.  While the regular adult is 21% protein, the large breed is 24% protein, and adds the rice gluten as an ingredient where the regular has no gluten product listed.

So calcium is not the only difference.  Ron, you could probably feed the regular formula with a small amount of meat or cooked egg each day - just a couple ounces would most likely do it, and you'd have in fact a superior diet for your dog than the product that increases protein with rice gluten.  If you were uneasy about doing this, you could have a nutrition expert do the math for you - or run the numbers yourself using nutritiondata.com for nutrition value on the meat.

That's normal diet, anyway. Nearly every day, he gets some meat. Not a lot but maybe a few ounces total, in addition to his regular meal. I suppose your right and the way to balance to calcium to phosphorous, informally, if you will, is to increase the meat. Or in my case, feed him as I normally have been. Also, I can't tell for sure, but I could swear that he seems to like the taste of the regular formula a little better.

Also, in the case of him not eating unless I am there; DW can lead him outside with a piece of cheese that he would normally like and was interested in, and he doesn't eat it until I get home. That is, I don't think that he doesn't eat alone because he doesn't like the food, he just has this behavioral thing that he will only eat when I am there.
