    how far do you travel?

So how far do you drive to take your dog(s) for training?  I am 10 minutes away from the facility I currently go to, but....I'm so tempted to drive over an hour to Pamela Dennison's class, lol (in case you don't know her she has written a number of great books on dog behavior and training).

The place we're going to sign up at soon is about a half-hour away.  Man, an hour at these gas prices is mad, in my opinion.  But if you think you'd benefit by it, then go for it!

Nope, I'm staying close to home. I'll save up and go to a seminar where the longish drive (2 hrs) will be worth it for 2 days of instruction.

Someday, I will be a CT UDX

The classes I used to take where nearly 30 min away. I have taken classes an hour away, and do wish to take those same classes again sometime. We don't have good trainers in the area, so the hour drive is plenty worth it! :)

It's nearly an hour down to Kissimmee where we prefer to go -- if the trainer is good it's worth it.  But then, that's how we choose to spend our money.  Then again, here in Orlando everything is 45 - an hour away if you have a specific destination in mind.  I drive nearly an hour to go to my regular vet -- and go past probably 100 -200 vets to do that -- but MY vet is good.

I would drive the hour!  Even if you have a great trainer now, it doesn't hurt to get another perspective, especially if you have a dog with issues.  I would be willing to bet that you'd get something out of it, even if you only went once for a behavior consultation on the "guarding" you mentioned in the other thread.

We have been going to the same trainer for 3 years, 1/2 hour away once or twice a week.  But we are looking into anther trainer the is 40 minutes away.

We travel about 10 minutes in town, so a few miles. If I were having serious problems and my current class wasn't addressing them, and a good class was an hour away, I think I'd do it.

Wow! That's a lot of training. Is this for a particular sport your dogs are involved in or is it more obedience type training?

Our club is 45 minutes each way.  I go there 2-3 times a week.  The SchH club I am helping to start is 1.5 hours away.  That will be once every two weeks for now, possibly once a week later on.  Most of the shows I do are 1.5 hours away or so.  One was 3.5 hours but we stayed over night.

Oh crud- you know Pam?  She & I trained at the same place way back when she first got Cody.  She had a grooming shop a few minutes from here.  Her new place isn't all that far from me- maybe 20 minutes.  I know the dogs that were on the cover of her first book, too.

Anyway- I'm 5 minutes from the place Caleb & I go to now.  It literaly takes me longer to get the two of us out the door and into the truck then it does to drive there (right by where Pam's grooming shop was).  In a couple of weeks we'll be going about 30 minutes away (to the place where I met Pam), too.

LOL!!  NONE OF THE ABOVE, JUST FOR FUN.  I take him becasue he loves it (and I have met alot of good people).  He has been from puppy to advanced many times.  He is now used in demos too.  He is a very dog friendly dog, not so much a people's dog though so I like the socializing he gets. Even the beginner classes mentaly stimulates him, being a working dog he seems to really love the structure and it tires him out everytime.  Our trainers friend is starting a weight pull program so we are moving to this trainer and giving weight pulls a try.  We have dabbled in it but he is getting bored with the same old thing so Brenda (our trainer) has recommended this facility so we are going to give it a go.  We start next Saturday, can't wait to see how he does.Big Smile

Re: how far do you travel?

Back in NH, I traveled about 40 mins for my primary trainer on Sundays. Then during prep for competitions, it was 35 mins for another trainer on Weds, and 45mins for group practice another day of the week.

Now here in AZ, the training class for Jada was a 3 minute walk to the park.  Unfortunately, there's nothing on their schedule for Gracie's level, and I wasn't entirely comfortable w/the handling of novice classes w/Jada, so I will continue looking.

My trainer back in NH is worth a million bucks - and miles.  She has folks who travel almost an hour and a half each way, every Sunday.  That's more than one client.  I was very fortunate to have her so close... and I MISS HER!!!
