    Puppy diarrhea

I just bought a 9 week old Maltese puppy.  When we got him, we found out that he had ear mites and a fungus infection (in the ears).  The vet claimed to have found no mites even though we told her that we could (barely) see the mites walking around.
Said that "you can't see mites with the naked eye."  Brought the puppy back to the same office and a different vet "saw" the mites and administered medicine.  Anyway, now my puppy has diarrhea.  We had switched him from solid food (which he didn't really eat) to a canned food with a little solid mixed in (which he loves).  I've tried decreasing the amount of food he gets, but to no avail.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  During the first vet visit, I had them check for parasites, and they found none. (although they found no mites either...).  What else could it be besides parasites?  The brand wet dog food I am using is Wellness puppy.

I would stick with  solid food with a tiny bit of canned TSP...I would say it's because of the change in food

Except pretty much all puppies need to be wormed -- round worms are just plain "normal" in most puppies.  Don't wait to SEE them -- get him wormed.

And honestly -- if this is a vet somehow connected with the place you bought the puppy -- FIND ANOTHER.  A vet connected to them will not want to admit any true problems and you just won't get good vet care.

That "free vet care" can be such a huge draw-- but I've seen time and again it cause important stuff to go undetected and you're already seeing that.

I agree with Callie.  Also, when I hear young puppy and diarrhea------I often think coccidia.

    Re: Puppy diarrhea

Simply the stress of the new environment can set off diarrhea in the puppy -- ask me how I know....  Kaiser had either mushy or liquid poo for his first week with me.  I do agree that canned food is not helping the cause.

My 'secret weapon' is canned pumpkin.  Not pie filling, just plain canned pumpkin.  I am still feeding it to Kaiser twice a day to ensure that things stay on the firm side.  I also occasionally feed plain cultured yogurt to boost the gut flora.

Decreasing food won't do any good -- you can withhold food entirely until the diarrhea stops and then start to introduce it again, but I don't think that's necessary in this case (since it was likely brought on by switching the food, not a stomach bug).  I'd put him back on the solid food, too.  Some puppies pick at their food (mine does); they won't let themselves starve to death.  He'll learn to eat.
