    Injured paw, help please

I just took both dogs for a walk (it's super nice outside), after we were out for about 1 hour I noticed that Phoebe was limping. Sure enough... I checked her paw and part of the skin is missing (some of it is still attached). It's probably about 1/4 inch long and wide (kind of round) and doesn't really bleed but looks raw and painful.

Of course I was still a good 15 minute walk away from our house, no cell phone (wouldn't have done me any good since DH is at a track meet about 1 hour away). This lady (ANGEL!!!) saw me carry Phoebe (who weights almost 27 pounds) and offerd us a ride home. What a life saver.

So now I'm dealing with a hurt paw. I picked up some neosporin and cleaned it as best as I could (by myself - no one here to hold her) and put some of the neosporin on it. The emergency vet (called them) said to clean it, put neosporin on it and wrap it until tomorrow (or bring her in if it gets worse). It doesn't bleed, should I still wrap it?

What I can use to cover her foot when I take her outside? Do you think she could go for walks? We walk quite a bit every day, do you think she'd be ok for a short walk?

Sorry that I'm such a baby about this but I've never had this happen before. I feel so bad for my baby. I put one of those cone collars on her to keep her from licking it. She doesn't limp in the house (though I try to keep her lying down) but did outside.

Any advice is MUCH appreciated! Thanks!!!

    Re: Injured paw, help please

Pirate had dewclaw surgery a few months after I adopted him so I know a thing or two about covering paws :) To cover his paw, a ziploc bad with the 'zip' cut off works well. I used a baby sock to cover the baggie to keep it on snugly, outside. I let the incision air during the night once I was sure he wouldn't bug the stitches.

I think if she's not bothering it and there isn't any blood, it could wait until the morning to see the vet.

Keep it clean, continue what you are doing with the neosporin, I would not walk her untill the sore looks better, just try to keep her on grass

unfortunately you can't do much about these paw injuries except wait for them to heal. If the dog is prone to them you might want to invest in some kind of dog boot to protect the feet.

Bugs ripped his carpal pad and someone recommended a product called Cut Heal (I bought it at a Tractor Supply store) and it worked GREAT!  He healed up in 3 days

    good luck
