    Excited Puppy Peeing

Hi, I'm thinking about adopting a 3 month old fox terrier (possibly mixed) puppy. Her current owners are trying to potty train her on puppy pads and they keep her locked in the bathroom most of the time with a pad, letting her out for about 25 minutes a few times a day. When the puppy gets any attention from any of the household members she will get so excited that she pees, she even pees ON people. I'm thinking that if I adopt this puppy and not lock her in the bathroom, but let her be with me all the time, that she will probably stop with the excited peeing. What are your opinions? They also said that shes super hyper but I think that also has to do with being locked in the bathroom all the time.

Maze used to do that.. I would swear she has a second bladder. I'm pretty sure that socializing, more exercise and more attention will help the problem but until it's corrected, they do make puppy underwear she can wear just in case she has an accident. Also make sure she doesn't have anything medical wrong.

Rafe did this when I first got him from the shelter, and it continued a couple months later.  I think it was mostly due to the fact that he'd been in the shelter for a long while, and that he was just young.  Young dogs have trouble holding their bladder anyway, and when they're excited its even harder!  I agree with you that she will probably be MUCH better not being locked in a bathroom all day.  I'd definitely suggest crate training her, but obviously not keeping her there all the time.  She'll probably grow out of it as she gets older and gains more control over her bladder, but its not always so.  I've seen older dogs that still do this, but I think its more related to submissive urination than the puppy excitability.

Well, I just did some research on fox terriers.  It seems their personality is very different from toy fox terriers (those are the ones I have experience with) and I don't think she would be a good match for me.  I need to keep looking :/

i'm sure it will go away eventually. just make sure to avoid situations which tend to make her pee and keep her and her environment very calm for a while. she is still young, so i dont think this will be hard to deal with at all. dont "punish" her or correct her for peeing. it can make things worse sometimes.

Hi, I would suggest you to crate train your pup instead of locking him in the toilet. When i first brought Nina ( my pup) home, she always pee when she get excited - when we back home, visitors to our house, a lot of people gathering. As long as she is happy and get excited she will pee. This is because she is still small and cant control her bladder. As she grow, the situation will become better. But i would suggest you to crate train her. As i did the same for Nina and she is well trained now. Big Smile

You may want to write the article of What you should and should not do when crate train your dog.

after doing a little more research on fox terriers I decided its not the best breed for us anyway.
