    Weighted backpack for exercise?

I was pondering if a doggie backpack with some weight added would be ideal for a more substancial workout? My boy is pretty high energy and even with frequent dog park runs and 3 mile daily speed walks doesn't seem to be adequate of satisfying his high strung needs. Now that it's cold, it's getting more difficult to walk him for long periods of time and the dog park is deserted most of the time. If a weighted backpack is ideal what would be a good starting weight for an athletic 32lbs. dog? Thanks!

Yes, I think a pack with a little added weight is always a good idea as long as your dog is old enough and healthy enough.  With a German Shepherds and other large breeds, I'd wait until at least a year old, but I'm not sure when smaller breeds are finished growing.  It's important that the weight be balanced and held in pretty well (not jiggling or sliding around inside the bag).

Any links that you can direct me to where I can aquire a decent pack? What would you suggest as an ideal starting point for the backpack weight versus the dog's in percentage? 25% of the dog's weight, more, less? Appreciate the input! =)

I'm actually not sure b/c my dog (in my sig w/ the pack) usually just carries poop bags and a few other light things.  I haven't put weight in her bags yet b/c I have to find some rocks or something to use.  I would think that you could use a can or 20oz bottle of soda on each side.

I got my pack at Target and it was only $15 so I'm not sure how good it is.  I know some people that actually backpack with their dogs prefer much higher quality packs designed for real trekking and have the elastic webbing on it to hold everything in place.

    Re: Weighted backpack for exercise?

I believe it is 5% of their body weight at first and then they can go gradually go up to 25-30%.  I think I read they shouldn't carry more than 40% of their total body weight.  When I started Willow I just started her with it empty and then gradually started adding really light things.  Then eventually a small water bottle. In never really got much heavier than that with her.  Now, when she wears it she takes, plastic bags, keys and cell phone.  Yeah, you should definately start off very light and work your way up otherwise he might get sore or injured.

The other thing to keep in mind is to make sure the pack is placed properly on the dogs back.  I see a lot of people with the backpack up too high on the dogs shoulders.  It should be centered so it's pretty much right center of the back, not up high closer to the neck.  If you try some on him first it would help because you'll see some brands just don't fit some dogs properly.

Willow's is a wolfpack, it's www.wolfpacks.com.  If you click on their products, she's got the saddle bag one which is not very bulky.  It's nice for if you're just going for a walk or a hike and not camping or something like that.  It's also very easy to put on and off and stays in place with velcro.

I think 5% is a good place to start too. Salem has a ruffwear bag (www.ruffwear.com). He normally carries a bottle of water on each side plus inhaler and epi-pen for me, bags, cell phone, and gps is we are taking a long hike. If we are hiking out camping he carries his own food and water with him.

He loves his backpack because when we pull it out he is getting a good hike.

In my opinion wouldn't it be too harsh too to increase weight on the doggies back just because he wants a little more play or has some more stamina. ============================================================================================ Jacob link removed by moderator

Glad I stumbled upon this older thread, as this is something we're considering for Ari! To answer the above poster, no I don't think it's harsh. I think it's harsh if your putting too much on them, but done right I don't see the problem. It's nearing winter for us and I'm thinking a pack might help her workout, on days its too cold to stay out too long. Plus, we hike and it would be nice if my dog had a job to do lol and carried a few light things for us. I think Ari needs a job, to help with her focus, so I'm hoping to train the backpack as something that is HER job to do for us.
