    National Dog Show Post Mortem

So what did you guys think? I don't get to watch dog shows on TV that much because I don't have cable, so this is sort of a highlight of my year.

I really know next to nothing about the technical ins and outs of conformation showing, so I just kind of salivate over all the dogs I love. I was rooting for the gordon setter for BIS but I liked that aussie too. Everyone I was with were all mercilessly making fun of the peke, but poor little guy he can't help the way he looks!

bleah the coverage blew. I watched the first group and got NO info on group placements...hello? Group 2-4 is a HUGE deal...I want to know who took ALL FOUR PLACEMENTS. Also no reg names or breeder credit given...very much a dog show shot for non doggy folks. I stopped watching after the 1st group...tho I do have it Tivo'd.

I much prefer the Euk and WKC coverage.

I loved it.  I'm a big Herding Group fan, so I was thrilled when the Aussie won.  I have to say that I really enjoyed all of the group winners.  The Schipperke was adorable, and I loved the Peke.  I was a big fan of Jeffrey when he was showing, so to see his son doing his thing in the Toy ring was adorable.

Swizzle reminded me of Judy (Ch. Bayshore's Russian Roulette), another terrific blue merle Aussie from a few years ago.  I have such a soft spot for the breed!

EDIT: I agree with Gina, though, the coverage wasn't good.  I love watching dog shows, but I love knowing group placements and kennel names even more.

Yeah I noticed they were just saying "This is great dane number______(whatever)____" with no names. I wanted to know the names so I can start recognizing the big kennels and dogs of some of the breeds I love. Yeah, the coverage on TV always blows and they almost always skip over the breeds I really want to see. But I take what I can get I guess. You can do your own "webcast" though by pulling up all the info and breed ring footage from earlier in the show.

I hated the coverage.  They only showed a few dogs and the ones they did show, they didn't name.  They spent so much time showing just a few dogs go down and back, down and back when they could've showed 2 or 3 dogs and edited the exams.  It wasn't a live show anyway.  The dog shows on cable are better b/c they show every dog, or almost every one, and they give the dog's name up on the screen.

I agree, I think they showed like 6 hounds and totally missed the 13, who was the only one I cared to see since she was bred by my Beagle client. Not a fan of the 15 at all, but the coverage did allow me to see what he really looks like moving around the ring. I only watched the hound group and was so disappointed with the coverage, I turned it off.

I feel like the hounds always get the shaft on the televised shows. I don't know why that is.

I completely agree.  And being a sighthound, for the most part, is the curse of death in the televised dog show world.  Unless you've an Afghan or an IW, the coverage is minimal.  They're the ones shown in the "while we were away on commercial break" bits.

I didn't see the program however, and had no idea there was one on at all.

All I know is, I was waiting for them to cover the Amstaff and the Staffy Bull and surprise surprise, they skipped them both. Angry

They skipped half of the dogs I wanted to see, only covered the cute "popular" ones, and left out vital info on pretty much all of the ones they DID cover. Definitely a dog show shot for non-dog people.

I changed the channel, and that's saying a lot because I never miss televised dog shows.

Re: National Dog Show Post Mortem

In the Hound group they went down the line at the VERY beginning, and named each breed. No reg names but just breed....but you did get to see them all...briefly. It's a filler between football games and it sorta looked like that lol.

I have to say I was thrilled to see a white faced red representing the Akita, and it made the cut!...so nice to see something DIFFERENT. They do come in a lot of other colors besides "fawn, with white markings and a black mask" LOL.

Re: National Dog Show Post Mortem

I just looked at the web videos of the exams for a few of my faves and the poor black and tan was not showing very well I don't think. He wouldn't stack and his standing for exam could use some work! His handler admitted she was nervous (you can hear the chatter between the handlers and the judges). And yaknow I just do not like those heavy super-wrinkly giant-sized black and tans that the AKC seems to favor. I did however really like the look of the bloodhound. She didn't seem to have that really excessive heavy wrinkling that you sometimes see, and I really liked the shape of her head. And how about that Plott hound? Gorgeous!

That's how Mals are in the herding group.  Even the shows that try to show every dog.  The Mal is always up for like 2 seconds after a commercial. I can't ever remember one even making a judge's short list in all the shows I've watched.  They typically will give the shepherd good coverage, especially if Jimmy Moses is handling, and then it's like "oh here is the Mal it looks like a German Shepherd" next...

The show was taped from the Philadelphia cluster of Nov. 15 - Nov. 18 - it was the Saturday show. I also hate that they don't show all the dogs being examined, only those that the judge pulls on the first cut. I went and found the results so I could see who the Min Pin was :). I'll paste the link for both Saturday and Sunday results, that way y'all can see the breed and group results. Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving!

when we first got Bugs someone said boy he looks like a plott (native to the area) and we started researching the breed.  That was a gorgeous dog and the very dark brindle is very similar to Bugs's coat ( except his white spotted bits)  Anyway I posted earlier about the Great Dane which was absolutely gorgeous and HUGE

I would have preferred seeing more of the dogs and height and weight on them too.   i thought the B&T hound looked much bigger than I thought was the norm and so did the plott
