3yr old dog starting to Pee in the house!

I adopted a part Chihuahua part Jack Russell female dog about 5 months ago. She was around 3 years old when I adopted her. They told me she was potty trained and used a doggy door, so I got one. She was doing very well until the cold weather started. Now she pees on the carpet on a regular basis. She does it when I'm not looking so I never catch her. I have tried taking her outside and having her go, but she refuses to go because it's too cold or too wet outside. If I leave her outside to go, she stands by the back door and does not go. My husband is getting very upset and wants to get rid of her. I don't want to and want to find a solution! Does anybody have any suggestions? Thank you!!

Have you tried getting her a coat or a sweater? That might help if she is warm.

I guess besides that is to revert back to as if she were a puppy and start with the crate training again. Keep her in the crate and take her out to go potty (if you know how potty time interval take her out at those times).

I hope you work things out.

I would also suspect a urinary tract infection -- she may feel like she has to go more often so she tries to hold it and that worsens it.

Bottom line you will have to leash her TO you and keep track of her 100% of the time in order to deal with this problem.  Her feet may be sensitive so you may need to ditch the doggie door and give her boots or something to keep her feet warm and dry.  that means you have to be more aware of when she NEEDS to go so you can let her out and prepare her feet before you GO out.  Sometimes little dogs have more sensitive feet.  and once she's successfully started to go in the house she's reinforced herself to think she doesn't HAVE to.   So preventing her from screwing up is important.

Re: 3yr old dog starting to Pee in the house!

If Rascal were in your dog's position he would pee on the floor, too. He's pretty well housebroken, but he HATES going outside in bad weather. HATES HATES HATES it. So unless I force him to go outside he just won't do it, sweaters or booties and all.

The great news is that potty training in bad weather is really easy!!! The dog is super motivated to go inside where it's warm and cozy, so as soon as she realizes that she had to do her business in order to be allowed back inside, I bet you'll find she'll do it right away. In the winter, Rascal becomes a master of the "leap out the door and start peeing immediately" technique during the winter (watch your feet! lol).

The key is, as Callie said, you have to monitor her 100% of the time. She is motivated to pee where it's comfy - you have to make that impossible and take her outside frequently and then not back down. If you know she has to go, she is *not* allowed back inside until she produces something! (With Rascal at least this routine can take at least 15 minutes when the weather's nice and there are things to sniff. In the winter, a "long" wait is a couple of minutes.)

Is she crate trained? Confining her to a crate when you can't watch her would probably be very helpful.

Also, welcome to the boards :)

Re: 3yr old dog starting to Pee in the house!

    Hi!

I tried leaving her outside until she goes, but she just stands at the back door...shivering....refusing to go. I have left her back there for a long time and she still won't go. How long did you have to leave your dog outside and for how many days before Rascal finally got it? I have not tried the booties and sweater yet, so maybe that will make a difference. I will have to go buy the booties since I don't have any, but it's a good idea since it seems that her feet are what's bothering her.

No, she is not crate trained. She has full roam of the house. We have another dog as well and he is not crate trained, but does very well. We have had him since he was a puppy. He is 5 yrs old now. An extremely good dog! I think we got spoiled with him! So we just let her roam the house with him. She did good for a long time, until it got cold! Now our family room carpet has become her new bathroom! Also, was wondering do you know of any product that is good for cleaning up urine from the carpet? Right now I'm just using carpet cleaner, but I'm sure that's not doing a thing for the scent. I'm sure there are several out there, but was looking for one that actually worked! If you know of one, please let me know, I'd appreciate it!

    Thanks for your advice!
