    Vaccinating your own pet?

I've been reading up a lot on vaccinating your own pet. Is there anyone here who does that? If so, what's your experience with it?

Thank you! I'd appreciate your reply

I used to, years ago when I operated a horse farm. It is not difficult to administer shots but I would speak with your vet about it and see if they are willing to train you. Also be aware that it is possible for a dog to have an adverse reaction to a shot. Are you prepared to handle this if the situation occurs?

I just let my vet do it.

I do my own heartworm preventative.  I'd prefer not to vaccinate b/c I also want annual check-ups and a heartworm test, so the vet has to do that anyway.  Kenya got a shot the day I picked her up b/c the breeder does them herself (and her husband is a vet).  It doesn't bother me, I just personally don't want to do it.

    Re: Vaccinating your own pet?

First, you need to check that vaccinating your pet for rabies is legal in your state/locality.

When we lived in San Diego County, CA rabies vaccinations could be bought at Petco.  The animol control would accept the box with the lot number as proof of vaccination.

In other places we have lived, vaccination by a vet is the requirement.  Actually I prefer the vet do it and get the other needed shots (parvo, bordetella, lyme, etc) at the the same time.

I do my own and have for years. No big deal...

I always buy single vaccines as opposed to combo's and space them out how I want to. My FIL who's a vet does the Rabies.

Ditto Gina.  I do not do rabies tho.  I cannot legally buy the vaccine without a kennel license and I've not gotten around to getting one of those.  I just space the visits for HW tests, annual blood work and titers, to correspond with when they need the rabies vaccine and work it that way.

I've vaccinated my own dogs for years (except for Rabies - they go to the vet for that), but I can't say that I really enjoy it.  I also vaccinate my horses, and again, I don't enjoy that either!

My sister-in-law orders vaccines for the whole kennel club and we get them very inexpensively, and in reality there truly is nothing to it.  I do keep a bottle of epinephrine on hand in case of reaction. I've been fortunate never to have had an adverse reaction but a friend's horse went into shock after a routine flu vaccine - she's allergic to that protion of the shot.

I vaccinate my horses.  They reacted horribly last year to the west nile vac ie: hives, muscle pain, lethargy with head to the ground.   I didn't vaccinate them this year.... My dogs/cats don't get vaccinated anymore (I used to do it).   I have the vet do rabies because otherwise, I don't get the tag.
