RE: Solid Gold - BARKING AT THE MOON

To my knowledge, it's mostly the wild claims they've made to some things. The owner had been prosecuted, at some point, for claiming that a product cured cancer.

Exactly, and the company uses fear tactics in advertising, but nothing wrong with the product itself.

    Thanks for the info.

i am not totally happy about the tactics but SG it will have to do untill I find somemthing else. For me, overall corporate integrity and ingredient quality/content are very important.

Can't somebody just make a food where the company doesn't test on animlas, their food doesn't contain crap or things my senior dog shouldn't have and is honest and has ethics and doesn't try to overcharge the consumer.

Oh there is....it's called my own kitchen [:D]

I would like to switch winston to BATM when he's older (he's only 10 months right now) . . . . can someone share with me what the purpose of adding water is (besides reducing the ash content).  In other words why is this important and would any liquid work like beef or chicken broth?

i add water (and a little canned) to make it soupy in order for my dog to eat it. she is missing some teeth.

I caution using beef or chicken broth as they all have onion listed in the ingredients,  even the organic brands. I know onions are not supposed to fed to dogs but I am not sure about onion in any form so I quit using it.

RE: Solid Gold - BARKING AT THE MOON

Fify odd years ago my Dad added water to the kibble and let it sit so it would puff up in the pan and not the dog's stomachs--and back then it did really puff a lot.  He "felt" that if it was not puffed upbefore hand  the dogs could eat more than they needed and get sick.   Like i said, i am talking 50 odd years ago and I don't know if the the bags even had a feed line guide or other information on them..  I got my first dog for my 11th birthday in '56 and  I put water in her food, and to this day still add water to my dogs' kibble.  Oh, that is not quite right.  In the mornings they each get 1 cup of dry usually with a spoon of yogurt, but sometimes it is a jar of babyfood divided between the 3 golden retrievers.  At night they get their kibble plus home cooked or canner (or fresh baked) fish and I add water to it then.  Now i know all kinds of things I/my dad didn't know back them, like about bloat.

I always added water to slow them down a bit, and because dehydrated food=dehydrated dogs. When you eat a lot of dried food, you need a lot more water. Adding it to their food ensures that they are getting it.

Liquid is necessary to help the kidneys get rid of excess minerals.  While broth may help with that, but it usually adds stuff like salt which your dog doesn't need.

    Luvntzus:
A real selling point of Timberwolf Organics Wild and Natural (also high protein and grain free) is that ash is only 5%.

I have problems believing that figure of only 5%.

I mean, TW declares a guaranteed calcium and phos content of 1.4% and 1.1% respectively - but the actual figures are 2.2 and 1.7%. That's a whopping difference in my book. With such high mineral values, I just cannot understand how they could possibly achieve a low overall 5% ash figure.

I know there's no grain in this food - and grains tend to be quite high in phos - but still ... it's the high calcium figure that makes me suspect that what they claim to be "low ash chicken meal" is in fact not all that low.

While feeding this short term will be no problem ... I would not feed long term.

The Fromm Surf and Turf might be a better food long term and the Wellness Core , and Blue's Wilderness Cal to Phos ratio looks good but their site did not list ash.

Don't know what breed dogs you have but they might like Solid Golds Wolf King that doesn't have the high ash or excess protein your dogs may not need if they are not active.

Sasha gets BATM and does well with it.

I roll my eyes at the advertising of many organic/holistic/earth friendly whatever products. I still eat or use those kind of products, but I haven't drunk the koolaid if you know what I mean.

Wow!! This thread got dragged up from the bottom of the pile, it's a year old... I don't even feed kibble anymore.  We've moved onto raw.

FWIW I will say I was very happy with it while I fed it, BATM that is. However, when I moved I went over to raw, since meat was a lot less here (the cost of living in Hawaii is not cheap!)
