  Durable, waterproof, steady burn lighted collar Reply Contact Tall order, huh? I have scoured the internet for something like this and keep coming up short. Every lighted collar or light attachment I've used last no more than a week with my dogs. They wrestle, (including neck grabbing), play, run super fast and swim which destroys everything I've tried. I'm desperate and need something that Neiko can wear during SAR training, which is all in the dark now that the time has changed.   Any ideas? I've tried the visiglo collars but those are all broken now already (about a dozen wears). I've tried Niteize - didn't work either.

  Re: Durable, waterproof, steady burn lighted collar Reply Contact Not exactly what you want...but when I used to walk and train Kenya in the dark, I had her wear a comfortable mesh vest and attached a good quality/bright blinker to the D-ring on her back. I also put it on her when DH takes her jogging.  That way if her head is down, a blinker attached to the collar is not blocked.  Hard to miss a blinking back!   Re: Durable, waterproof, steady burn lighted collar Reply Contact I like Lies's idea -- but the only thing I came up with would be one of those "break and glow" thingys.  Like the self-contained lights where you crush the little pellet and it "glows" for hours?  They make little tube-like ones that could simply either be threaded thru a vest or around the collar.  They sell them at Disney all the time, and I've bought stuff like that to have for during hurricanes.   They'd be one use only -- so you'd have to buy them in quantity but usually they aren't expensive and usually there is 12 hours or so of visible light.   But it would BE waterproof and no electricity involved so it would be super safe.   Re: Durable, waterproof, steady burn lighted collar Reply Contact  I thought about those Callie and wondered if that is my best option.   Lies, I have 2 of those vests :) Unfortunately, when we are doing SAR, we are not allowed to have harnesses or vests on the dogs. They don't even like the dogs searching with collars on but I'm not going to budge on that one. My dogs won't do wilderness search without a collar and bell on. I'm trying to fight for my reflective SAR harness but so far no luck. They have had dogs get caught up and washed down rivers because the dogs harness/vest got stuck on something. (Wilderness air scent dogs range pretty far from the handler and are out of sight a lot of the time). I understand the safety risk but in all the years I've had dogs running through woods (which we do almost daily!), I've never had one of them get hung up on something due to their harness or vests.

  Re: Durable, waterproof, steady burn lighted collar Reply Contact Makes sense, didn't think of that.  Though it seems like a tightly fit mesh vest might actually be safer than a collar (vest is velcro so can easily rip off....collar unless break-away not so much). That'd probably get broke fast. It's hard to really tell from the photo though

  Re: Durable, waterproof, steady burn lighted collar Reply Contact I keep my old The Whole Dog Journals and there have been a few articles on reflective/glowing/light-up safety gear. A lot of it is leashes and harnesses though. The visiglo products were rated well, but it says they're only water resistant, not water proof; so swimming may have killed them. Here's a few suggestions if you haven't checked them out yet: If you can use lights that attach to collars this one is watertight. It can either hang from a D-ring like a tag, or clip to your dog's collar. This site has an assortment of stuff, including collars with LED lights built in and reflective stripes. They're only water resistant. This site has a similar collar and claims it has a waterproof switchbox. It looks like you may gave to order them in a box of 12 though. My only other suggestion would be a glow in the dark collar that OllyDog used to make. I had one for my foster dog and loved it. They're a strange plasticy material. It's flexible enough to be comfortable, but waterproof and wipes clean. You would have to charge it in light before your training sessions, but it's pretty bright and lasts a good while. OllyDog stopped making it for whatever reason, but it looks like this site still has some and they're on clearance. Hopefully some of that helped. ~Jane W.~

  Re: Durable, waterproof, steady burn lighted collar Reply Contact When we were in SAR I used the cheapie collars at Petsmart - oddly enough they worked pretty well compared to the higher priced stuff.  I bought one for about $12 and it was still working well when Z got dismissed (about 8 months of use).  We did use it in rain and cold, but it was never submerged.  I did have to replace the battery after about 6 months, but other than that it's still in good condition. A number of my teammates used these: http://www.auroralites.com/k9safety.asp but a few handlers didn't like the blue color.
