    rw-Eli update

well I went down and picked up his report because apparently Hospital Mail is THE slowest form of mail on EARTH. And well, it's disheartening and a bit overwhelming to say the least.

We'd expected either but not both..but both is what we got. ADHD and Asperger's for the little guy. I am stil letting it sink in. Spoke to most of the family last night about things in the report we've all been doing wrong that we should correct and made a few appts for him to get the process started.

We are looking into meds for the ADHD because honestly that has been getting steadily worse as school has gotten more challenging. The school will be getting a copy after we speak to the doc on Monday and we'll start the onerous process of "officially" getting him his help he's entitled to for school.

Much information in the report, I think she nailed it with many things she observed and tested and there's nothing in there I'd really argue with. I'm edging towards acceptance at this point because he's just frustrated and struggling and we all can help him...so we need to.

So that's where we are now...and much as I still mainly dislike She Who Must Be Obeyed she did nudge us to get him looked at and as a result I know more about my son now and how challenging life has been for him with us all not knowing what was going on...

    onwards!

I couldn't agree more. I know that there's no one more capable of dealing with the challenges Eli will face than you are.

Sorry to hear about this.  But the more you know the better off you can deal with everything.  One thing I would suggest, especially with the ADHD, I know awhile back you had a post about his diet, I would definitely suggest looking into how changing his diet could help with the ADHD.  My doctor feels a lot of adhd of is diet and food allergy related.  Dairy, sugars, grains and processed foods can cause a lot of issues if you are sensitive or allergic and really mess with your blood sugar stability.  Just thought I'd suggest it if someone else hasn't already.

Gina -- you're doing everything as right as possible and I  SO applaud your outlook.  Particularly your attitude towards his teacher -- your willingness to give her credit for nudging you in the right direction will help keep that balance.

I've got green tea, decaf Constant Comment, chamomile, and decaf Folgers in my desk.  I *DO* have an extra nice mug -- I know caffeine would be more your thing, but you'll have to accept my humble offering of a "nice cup of tea in a pretty mug" -- according to my Gram (God rest her soul) it *would* make anything difficult just a bit more manageable.

So, if nothing more have a cuppa cyber tea my friend and at least be a bit amused, if not fully refreshed.  (I do have some Oreos tho -- and I'll pass that package along too -- it's not Tasty Kake but those weren't fresh last week and the Oreos were, so that's what I've got!!)

    *hugs*

It's reassuring that you agree with the report, and now he can get the extra help he needs.

Gina, I know that this wasn't the diagnosis that you had hoped for, but I know that you & your DH are the best people to deal with these issues.

Gina, if you need any personal testimonials on the ADHD meds, let me know. I was diagnosed at the age of 6 and was on a lot of meds until I was out of high school. It helped me so much on my schoolwork, once we found the right one.

    Re: rw-Eli update

Thanks guys for the support and offers of input. I will likely be here asking lots of questions, venting, and PMing folks from time to time.

I am feeling better about it and more ready to deal at this point. I don't have to do this alone, which helps. My dh, his family, and mine are all standing behind me, and most importantly behind Eli, and that is very comforting. To know I have even more support here is wonderful. Thank you all! Smile
